  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Double Vision written by Margaret Slocomb and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Double Vision serves as a prequel to Among Australian Pioneers, which highlighted the experience of Chinese indentured laborers on the northern frontier from 1848 to 1880—a time of intense conflict. With this latest book, historian Margaret Slocomb responds to a call for more regional histories of early contact relations, so we can understand their complexity as well as the diversity of reactions and responses that followed. The author observes that encounters at the margins of settlement between new societies seeking profits and traditional owners defending their land are bruising, brutal affairs conducted beyond the reach of regular norms and conventions, and contested within a framework of conflicting, mutually incomprehensible and irreconcilable laws. The Northern Districts of Wide Bay and Burnett on the tribal lands of the Kabi Kabi and Wakka Wakka nations represented that frontier from roughly 1845 until Queensland formed a separate colony in 1859. Dispossession was violent by its very nature, but there was also accommodation and adaptation on one side, and compassionate advocacy on the other. Join the author as she seeks if not the full truth, at least a unified understanding of our shared history and mutual recognition of its contested nature.

Book Secularisation

  • Author : Christopher Hartney

Download or read book Secularisation written by Christopher Hartney and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secularisation: New Historical Perspectives unveils an exciting range of case studies exploring emerging research in secularisation with an international outlook. Inspired by scholarship conducted by the Religious History Association, this collected volume questions the paradigm of secularisation by exploring its historical manifestations and making projections as to the future divide between religious life and the secular world. A must-read for anyone interested in events and personalities that shaped the religious landscape of the present, this volume contains meticulous historical research. It also presents a strong focus on the Southern Hemisphere, which is often largely absent in discussions of secularity. Topics covered here include schisms between secularism and Christianity in Australia and on a global scale; Jesuit frontier missions in Ibero-America; the publically religious displays of the Salvation Army; competition between church life and emerging recreational pursuits at the turn of the century; Joseph Fletcher’s contributions ethical secularity; the privileged place of Christianity within the Queensland educational system; notions of religiously justified violence amongst the ANZAC forces; and the ongoing debate between constitutional secularity and Christian nationhood in the United States of America from its foundation up until the present day. The latter part of the volume explores the secularisation paradigm as a cultural creation in its own right – an important consideration for any scholar in this field. To this end, the authors explore the mythic status of secularisation as a social and historical concept; question the validity of historical approaches to this discourse; explore whether or not definitions of ‘religion’ are too conservative to be workable; and pose the question of whether or not secular institutions like state museums are really what they claim to be. The role of religion in public life is a fascinating question to explore, and one that must be tackled via a truly international exploration of secularisation. So too must the inquisitive scholar consider the very nature of the terms employed in research. Secularisation: New Historical Perspectives is the perfect toolkit for such investigations.

Book Among Australia S Pioneers

Download or read book Among Australia S Pioneers written by Margaret Slocomb and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The almost simultaneous abolition of the slave trade and the cessation of convict transportation to the colony of New South Walesnow eastern mainland Australiastarted a quest by the squatter pastoralists for alternative sources of cheap labor for their vast sheep runs. Over a period of five years, beginning from 1848, around three thousand Chinese men and boys from Fujian Province were recruited under conditions little different from the slave trade. In Among Australias Pioneers, author Margaret Slocomb focuses on the experiences of approximately two hundred of these Chinese laborers between 1848 and 1853. Her research examines their working conditions during the five-year indenture period and also traces the lives of several of the men who, at the end of their contract, chose to remain in those districts, which, by then, had become familiar to them. Perhaps they regarded themselves as pioneer immigrants. Slocomb recounts the experiences of these men on the dangerous northern frontier of European settlement. While some succumbed to the despair and loneliness of a shepherds life, others survived their indenture and went on to play an important role in the emerging society of the new colony of Queensland. They may certainly be counted among the nations pioneers.

Book Religion in Secular Education

Download or read book Religion in Secular Education written by Cathy Byrne and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathy Byrne presents the secular principle as a guiding compass for religion in government schools in plural democracies. Using in-depth case studies, historical and contextual research from Australia, and comparisons with other developed nations, Religion in Secular Education provides a comprehensive, at times confronting, analysis of the ideologies, policies, pedagogies, and practices for state-school religion. In the context of rising demands for students to develop intercultural competence and interreligious literacy, and alongside increasing Christian evangelism in the public arena, this book highlights risks and implications as education develops religious identity – in individual children and in nation states. Byrne proposes a best practice framework for nations attempting to navigate towards socially inclusive outcomes and critical thinking in religions education policy.
