Book excerpt: The Queen of Xana is an adult fairy story, not for children, and a policial allegory. In the mythical land of Xana, Queen Julia governs as a typical medieval monarch in which the country's vast wealth is concentrated in a tiny aristocracy. Her daughter, and heiress to the throne, Princess Agatha, is champion of the impoverished commoners. The evil sorcerer Magi comes to Xana, kills the queen, and ravages aristocrats and commoners alike. Princess Agatha is protected by her fairy godmother, who declares that she can save her people only if she identifies her handsome prince incognito in the crowd on her very first try and makes love to him. She will not have a second chance. She succeeds by being alert when an extraordinary event happens. Then she asserts her right to rule instead of disappearing into pampered obscurity like most fairytale princesses. Queen Agatha now concocts one radial political scheme after another as she strives relentlessly to achieve her goal of prosperity for all. On the way she must deal with corruption on her own council of advisors, a vicious usurer, the school bully, barbarians kidnapping and enslaving her people, and invasion by a foreign army much larger than her own. And on the way she nurtures several children of humble background into adult greatness. But will the prosperity that she has created outlast her own lifetime?

Book excerpt: The long-awaited war has come in the sweeping conclusion to the Lot Lands trilogy—another irresistibly swashbuckling, swaggering, foul-mouthed fantasy from the author of The Grey Bastards. “[A] rip-roaring, shelf-bending conclusion . . . nothing short of an adventure fantasy masterwork.”—Kirkus Reviews (Best Books of the Year) War has come to the Lot Lands—and Oats stands upon the frontline. The Hisparthan armies on the horizon are mighty, bolstered by divine champions, dread sorcerers, and gunpowder. It’s almost more than the half-orc rebellion can hope to repel. But Oats has won impossible fights before. He’s a thriceblood, after all, more orc than man. And he hasn’t forgotten how to kill. He’ll stack the bodies high for his chief and his brethren, if that’s the price of freeing the Lots from human tyranny. Besides, the invading forces are getting a damned sight more than they bargained for. They’re not facing a handful of half-orc hoofs, but a true army—one forged from all the peoples of the Lots. At its head are Fetching, in full command of the ruinous power that runs through her veins, and Jackal, armed with the blessings of a dead god. Yet Oats can’t help but find his faith wavering. Once the strongest Bastard, he soon realizes that in this battle, even the strength of a thriceblood is easily conquered. And after a grievous loss strikes, he begins to fear that this war will lead the Lots not to freedom but to ruin. So when another path to peace beckons, he has no choice but to walk it. Even if it means betting the Lots’ fate, and his own, on the promises of the Bastards’ wiliest adversary—and making a perilous journey into the heart of Hispartha itself. Brimming with all the epic battles, surprising sorcery, and fiendish twists a Bastards fan could wish for, alongside unforgettable moments for characters old and new, The Free Bastards builds a new future for the Lots—even as it gives our beloved trio of Jackal, Fetching, and Oats the rousing, blood-soaked sendoff they deserve.

Book excerpt: "The Legend of Queen Agatha" will carry you away to the magical land of Xana, where Queen Julia rules as a typical medieval aristocrat while her teenage daughter, Princess Agatha, champions the commoners. When the evil sorcerer Magi kills the queen and ravages her land and her people, Agatha is protected by her fairy godmother, who informs her that her Prince Charming will come, but he will not identify himself. It's up to the princess to find him and make love to him (just kissing is not enough) - and only him - if Magi is to be vanquished and the Bad Times dispelled. Love is made, and the fairy tale continues. But the typical Cinderella story ends when Agatha insists on stepping into the lead rather than becoming irrelevant, as is so often the fate of fairy tale princesses. Queen Agatha is determined to fulfill her destiny of inspiring the good people of Xana to rebuild their ruined land into the greatest prosperity the world has ever known. Everyone should prosper from the fruits of their own labor, with no one left out. To achieve her vision Queen Agatha must carry out bold, radical actions. According to some versions of the legend, clothing is optional. It's up to you to decide which version you want to embrace in this provocative and controversial allegory.

Book Agatha the Beloved Queen

Download or read book Agatha the Beloved Queen written by Fred Pilcher and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-29 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Agatha the Beloved Queen" includes medieval fantasy, philosophical fiction, and erotic fiction. It is an adult fairy story, not a children's fairy story. The target audience is adults 18+ who admire strong women, sympathize with the common people in preference to the fabulously wealthy, and for whom occasional fantasy, a fairy godmother and an evil sorcerer, and a few explicit adult scenes will enliven a story. People who are socially and politically conservative probably won't like it. Queen Julia rules the mystical and medieval land of Xana in which fabulous wealth is concentrated in a tiny aristocracy and most of the common people are very poor. Her daughter, Princess Agatha, is champion of the commoners but does not have the power to correct the imbalance. The evil sorcerer Magi comes to Xana, kills the queen, and ravages aristocrats and commoners alike. Her fairy godmother comes to Agatha and says that if she identifies her handsome prince incognito in the crowd on her very first try and makes love to him (just kissing is not enough), Magi will be destroyed. But she will not have a second chance. Agatha succeeds, and now as queen devotes her entire reign to devising economic and social methods to bring prosperity to all. She must deal with corruption on her own council of advisers, a vicious usurer, the school bully, brutal bandits on the frontier, and invasion by an army much larger than her own. She nurtures several children with humble backgrounds into adult greatness. In Agatha we discover an inspired princess who becomes a wise queen with a destiny, a mission to bring prosperity to every person in her medieval land. Agatha has infinite compassion for the downtrodden, a work ethic that inspires work ethic in her people. She loves children and children love her. She has zero tolerance for abusive behavior; when it happens she stops it real fast. To put the proverbial icing on the cake, Agatha and her handsome prince are both sexually insatiable - with each other. The methods used by Queen Agatha in the fifteenth century to bring prosperity to all may also work in our 21st century. However, some readers may disagree that her methods were wise and wholesome. The author leaves that decision to you.

Book While Idaho Slept

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Reuben Appelman
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Release : 2023-10-03
  • ISBN : 0063346680
  • Pages : 331 pages

Download or read book While Idaho Slept written by J. Reuben Appelman and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the acclaimed true-crime memoir, The Kill Jar, tells the inside story of the “University of Idaho Murders,” offering a memorable, thoughtful dive into our societal fascination with true crime, the media’s seeming blood-frenzy, and the future of homicide investigations, while cultivating an intimate look into the minds and hearts of the victims and their suspected killer alike. Just after 4:00 am on November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students were viciously stabbed to death in an off-campus house. The killings would shake the small blue-collar college town of Moscow, Idaho, dominate mainstream news coverage, and become a social media obsession, drawing millions of clicks and views. While a reticent Moscow Police Department, the FBI, and the Idaho State Police searched for the killer, unending conjecture and countless theories blazed online, in chatrooms and platforms from Reddit and YouTube to Facebook and TikTok. For more than a month, the clash of armchair investigators and law enforcement professionals raged, until a suspect—a 28-year-old Ph.D. candidate studying criminology—was arrested at his family home 2,500 miles away in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania on the day before New Year’s Eve. While Idaho Slept is a thought-provoking, literary chronicle of a small-town murder investigation blistering beneath the unceasing light of international interest, as traditional investigators, citizen sleuths, and the true-crime media acted—sometimes together, often in conflict—to uncover the truth. As J. Reuben Appelman brings this terrible crime into focus, he humanizes the four victims, examining the richness of their lives, dissects the mind and motivations of their presumed killer, and explores the world of northern Idaho, a rugged, deeply conservative stronghold steeped in Christian values and American patriotism. Going deep inside the case, Appelman addresses a crucial question: With so many millions of citizens armed by access and hungry to take part in a true crime hunt of their own, has the nature of homicide investigations permanently changed? Rising above the sensational, While Idaho Slept illuminates the intrinsic connection between today’s media, citizen sleuths, our societal mania for murder tales, and an impatient public’s insatiable appetite for spectacle as never before. Running beneath, the pulse of the story is a heartbreaking narrative of the people we love, the dreams we all share, and the uncertain time left for sharing them.
