Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dental Times, 1864, Vol. 1: A Quarterly Journal of Dental Science The above is not now held to be the correct hypothesis. At the present time the theory of atoms or molecules is the one that prevails. That is, that matter was created in certain definite fixed sizes and shapes, although these particles are exceedingly small, and so minute as to admit of no division, still they have a definite size and shape. Appears to have been the prevailing wind on the average in 7 months of each year, being identical in value to that found from the years 1841 to 1860, the Observations being treated in a similar way. In the years 1863, 1867, and 1868 it was the prevalent wind in 8 months, and in the year 1864 and 1866 in 5 or 6 months only. The S. Wind in these ten years was the prevalent wind for about i a month in each of the years 1869 and 1870. The s.e. Wind was also prevalent for about 5 a month in the year 1864. This wind was less frequent after the year 1858 than previously. The E. Was the prevalent wind for about Q a month in the years 1861, 1866, and 1867, and has been more prevalent than in the years before 1861. Book The Quarterly Journal of Science 1869 Vol 6

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quarterly Journal of Science, 1869, Vol. 6: With Illustrations on Stone and Wood Is it, as Professor Tyndall supposes, a specific ether, which serves as the vehicle for light and electricity? Does it enter, as he believes it does, into the constitution of material bodies? Or is it excluded beyond the limits of our atmosphere? Or again, is it, as Mr. Grove believes, an attenuated gas or mixture of gases, given off from the atmospheres of the revolving worlds? Let us first endeavour to understand the conceptions of these opposite thinkers, and then to test their respective hypotheses by the best means at our command. Professor Tyndall's conception of a luminiferous ether is that it is a substance almost infinitely elastic, filling all space as with jelly. It fills up the interstices between molecules of all kinds of matter, suffering no rupture of continuity at the surface of the eye, the intermolecular spaces of the various humours being filled with it.t He believes it to form the infinite ocean in which worlds move, and to be the medium for the transmission of light there, as well as in the intermolecular spaces of material substances - in short he regards it as the medium for the transmission of light - (and probably of electricity) everywhere. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quarterly Journal of Science, Vol. 3: With Illustrations on Copper, Wood, and Stone The dress of the male peasantry is picturesque: it consists of a cloth jacket, a showy waistcoat embroidered at the back, velveteen breeches open at the knees, ornamented with a number of buttons; when travelling their jacket is generally dispensed with; their well-made legs are covered with long leather gaiters ornamented with coloured leather; a straw hat shadows their generally fine features: altogether they present models of fine masculine forms capable of enduring great fatigue. This pretty and suitable dress is, however, spoilt in a great degree by wearing over it, even in the hottest day, an English blanket made into a sort of cloak formed by a running string round the neck. It is said, that this part of their dress was used by the Guanches, the ancient inhabitants of the island. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Science and the Arts, 1817 IN presenting to the Public the First Number of the Quarterly Journal of Science and the Arts, the Editors have deemed it useless to descant upon the utility of periodical publications, in facilitating the progress and diffusion of philosophy, and in benefiting the arts, by fumishing a channel by which insulated facts and opinions may be added to the common stock of knowledge and experience. These advantages' are duly estimated by scientific men, and by the public at large. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Journal of Science Vol 2 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Science, Vol. 2: And Annals of Astronomy, Biology, Geology, Industrial Arts, Manufactures, and Technology (Monthly, Formerly "the Quarterly Journal of Science;") In looking over the list we are reminded in a striking manner of a fundamental difference between the Royal Society and the Academies of the Continent, a difference which may perhaps be the best described by the term com prehensiveness. For, beside the class of Fellows selected, in accordance with our recent legislation, from the members of the Privy Council, it has always been our custom to gather into our ranks not only men of eminence in Science proper, and in subjects which border on it, but also men of distinction in other paths of life, provided that they have followed those paths on principles which are analogous to our own, and which by no undue strain of the analogy may themselves be called scientific. In illustration of this remark, I might point in the present list to the man of letters, to the architect, to the politician, to those who have honourably served in various departments of the public service, to the man of wealth who has turned his large means to large-minded purposes for the welfare of the people. And although the act of erasing them from our list marks our loss, yet the fact of having once reckoned them among our number is in itself a gain, and must help to enlist the sympathies of the world outside in our special function, viz., the promotion of natural knowledge, while at the same time it tends to enlarge our own. To mention briefly a few of these - In Sir James Mathe son we have lost a wealthy and enlightened member, who devoted much of his time, his energy, and his means in promoting the welfare, both moral and intellectual, of the people among whom he made his home. In the Marquis of Tweeddale we have an instance, hap pily not singular, of one who, without any professional connexion with the subject, contrived amidst the distractions of active service to lay the foundations of a solid knowledge of one branch of science; while in later years he became an active collector and the author of valuable contributions to the publications of the Geological Societies over which he presided. Download or read book The Quarterly Journal of Science Vol 6 of 13 written by William Crookes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quarterly Journal of Science, Vol. 6 of 13: And Annals of Mining, Metallurgy, Engineering, Industrial Arts, Manufactures, and Technology If a bit of dry moss, peat, or other rubbish, is blown on to the disk, as often happens, the tentacles clasp it in a useless manner. They soon, however, discover their mis take, and release such innutritious matter. Drops of water falling upon the leaf whether as natural rain or artificially sprinkled-produce no effect. This is the more remarkable as small rain-drops often adhere to the viscid secretion of the plant, and must occasion a pressure vastly greater than that of the bits of hair above mentioned. It is obvious that to be affected by rain-fall would be highly inconvenient to the plant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Quarterly Journal of Science 1877 Vol 7 written by William Crookes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quarterly Journal of Science, 1877, Vol. 7: And Annals of Mining, Metallurgy, Engineering, Industrial Arts, Manufactures, and Technology; Vol. XIV (O. S.) In October, 1866, however, Schmidt was startled by finding no trace of Linne, when it was in a position when it should have been most conspicuous. Instead of the deep wide crater with its interior filled with intense black shadow, all he could detect was a faint, indistinct, cloudy marking, about 5 miles in diameter. During the subsequent evenings it retained this aspee'c, though at times it was so indistinet as to be barely visible. Schmidt immediately announced this startling circumstance, and during the end of 1866 and the commencement of 1867 nearly every astronomer in Europe directed his attention to this now-celebrated spot. Since then this portion of the moon has been repeatedly examined by selenographers, but Linne has never been seen of the size and Character ascribed to it by Lohrmann, Madler, and Schmidt. The conspicuous deep crater has utterly disappeared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
