Book Quantum Singularities in Black Hole Spacetime Systems with Timelike Classical Singularities

Download or read book Quantum Singularities in Black Hole Spacetime Systems with Timelike Classical Singularities written by Drew M. Weninger and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "General relativity is currently the best theory that describes gravitation, one of the four basic forces of nature. A thorough understanding of general relativity is essential for navigation systems reliant upon GPS to operate with accurate and precise measurements over time. Classical general relativity predicts the existence of irremovable singularities, points in space where a mathematical description of the spacetime "breaks down" due to geodesic incompleteness. These singularities are found in a host of relativistic spacetimes, including those of observable astrophysical objects such as black hole systems. In our study, timelike curvature singularities associated with a group of super-extremal spacetimes are analyzed with a quantum wave packet in place of geodesic incompleteness. In this case, these singularities may be "removed" or "healed" without imposing boundary conditions. The super- extremal spacetimes explored include overcharged and overspinning black hole systems with naked singularities and different assumptions such as penetration by a cosmic string, a higher dimensional universe background, or in expanding or contracting cosmologies. The technique to determine quantum singularities focuses on analysis of the spatial segment of the minimally coupled, relativistic Klein Gordon wave operator for a massive scalar particle and whether it is essentially self-adjoint. Both, Weyl's limit-point, limit-circle criterion and deficiency indices are used to determine self-adjointness. By using self-adjointness properties, the spacetime can be characterized as quantum mechanically singular or non- singular. This method can help in determining the behavior of quantum particles, including the Higgs and other bosons found in spontaneous symmetry breaking models, near a black hole singularity. Our results indicate the quantum wave operator is not essentially self-adjoint for the spherically-symmetric spacetimes and spacetimes with cosmic strings. Hence, they contain quantum singularities. Finally, for a wave packet in the vicinity of a rotating black hole's naked singularity, the wave operator is not essentially-self adjoint indicating quantum singularities exist and the ring singularity is not 'healed'."--from abstract.

Book The Story of Collapsing Stars

Download or read book The Story of Collapsing Stars written by Pankaj S. Joshi and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book journeys into one of the most fascinating intellectual adventures of recent decades - understanding and exploring the final fate of massive collapsing stars in the universe. The issue is of great interest in fundamental physics and cosmology today, from both the perspective of gravitation theory and of modern astrophysical observations. This is a revolution in the making and may be intimately connected to our search for a unified understanding of the basic forces of nature, namely gravity that governs the cosmological universe, and the microscopic forces that include quantum phenomena. According to the general theory of relativity, a massive star that collapses catastrophically under its own gravity when it runs out of its internal nuclear fuel must give rise to a space-time singularity. Such singularities are regions in the universe where all physical quantities take their extreme values and become arbitrarily large. The singularities may be covered within a black hole, or visible to faraway observers in the universe. Thus, the final fate of a collapsing massive star is either a black hole or a visible naked singularity. We discuss here recent results and developments on the gravitational collapse of massive stars and possible observational implications when naked singularities happen in the universe. Large collapsing massive stars and the resulting space-time singularities may even provide a laboratory in the cosmos where one could test the unification possibilities of basic forces of nature.

  • Author : Jim Baggott

Download or read book Quantum Space written by Jim Baggott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we are blessed with two extraordinarily successful theories of physics. The first is Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which describes the large-scale behaviour of matter in a curved spacetime. This theory is the basis for the standard model of big bang cosmology. The discovery of gravitational waves at the LIGO observatory in the US (and then Virgo, in Italy) is only the most recent of this theory's many triumphs. The second is quantum mechanics. This theory describes the properties and behaviour of matter and radiation at their smallest scales. It is the basis for the standard model of particle physics, which builds up all the visible constituents of the universe out of collections of quarks, electrons and force-carrying particles such as photons. The discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN in Geneva is only the most recent of this theory's many triumphs. But, while they are both highly successful, these two structures leave a lot of important questions unanswered. They are also based on two different interpretations of space and time, and are therefore fundamentally incompatible. We have two descriptions but, as far as we know, we've only ever had one universe. What we need is a quantum theory of gravity. Approaches to formulating such a theory have primarily followed two paths. One leads to String Theory, which has for long been fashionable, and about which much has been written. But String Theory has become mired in problems. In this book, Jim Baggott describes ": an approach which takes relativity as its starting point, and leads to a structure called Loop Quantum Gravity. Baggott tells the story through the careers and pioneering work of two of the theory's most prominent contributors, Lee Smolin and Carlo Rovelli. Combining clear discussions of both quantum theory and general relativity, this book offers one of the first efforts to explain the new quantum theory of space and time.

Book What is Real Space Time Singularities Or Quantum Black Holes Dark Matter Or Planck Mass Particles General Relativity Or Quantum Gr

Download or read book What is Real Space Time Singularities Or Quantum Black Holes Dark Matter Or Planck Mass Particles General Relativity Or Quantum Gr written by Balungi Francis and published by Bill Stone Services. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly is physical reality? In elegant and accessible prose, theoretical physicist Balungi Francis leads us on a wondrous journey from space time singularities to Quantum Black Holes without information loss, from the Bekenstein-Hawking Area entropy law to his famous Volume entropy law of Black holes, from Modified Newtonian Dynamics, Dark Matter to Planck mass particles, from White Dwarfs to Black Holes and from General Relativity to his own work in Quantum Gravity. As he shows us how the idea of reality has evolved over time, Balungi offers deeper explanations of the theories he introduced so concisely in Quantum Gravity in a Nutshell1. Balungi invites us to imagine a marvelous world where space breaks up into tiny grains, singularities disappears, information loss in Black holes resolved, time disappears at the smallest scales, and black holes are waiting to explode. This wonderful and exciting book is optimal for physics graduate students and researchers. The physical explanations are exceedingly well written and integrated with formulas. Quantum Gravity is the next big thing and this book will help the reader understand and use the theory.

Book excerpt: In a technologically suppressed future, information demands to be free in the debut novel from Hugo Award-winning author Charlie Stross. In the twenty-first century, life as we know it changed. Faster-than-light travel was perfected, and the Eschaton, a superhuman artificial intelligence, was born. Four hundred years later, the far-flung colonies that arose as a result of these events—scattered over three thousand years of time and a thousand parsecs of space—are beginning to rediscover their origins. The New Republic is one such colony. It has existed for centuries in self-imposed isolation, rejecting all but the most basic technology. Now, under attack by a devastating information plague, the colony must reach out to Earth for help. A battle fleet is dispatched, streaking across the stars to the rescue. But things are not what they seem—secret agendas and ulterior motives abound, both aboard the ship and on the ground. And watching over it all is the Eschaton, which has its own very definite ideas about the outcome...
