Book The Quantitative Significance of Nondestructive Evaluation of Graphite and Ceramic Materials

Download or read book The Quantitative Significance of Nondestructive Evaluation of Graphite and Ceramic Materials written by John W. Orner and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research was to utilize the nondestructive testing (NDT) information, correlations, and techniques developed during previous years for the formulation of an experimental approach for verifying the quantitative significance of nondestructive evaluation of graphite and high temperature ceramic materials intended for aerospace structures and systems. As a part of the program, nondestructive evaluation was carried out on a series of billets of hot pressed diboride compositions of zirconium and hafnium with various additions hot pressed. Two grades of graphite (ATJ and RVA) were investigated to determine the significance of typical defective conditions on the physical behavior of the material. Tensile specimens containing various types of flaws, as determined by nondestructive tests, were broken and the results correlated with the NDT findings. (Author).

Download or read book Investigation of Nondestructive Methods for the Evaluation of Graphite Materials written by G. E. Lockyer and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program of investigation was begun in April 1964, to determine nondestructive methods and techniques for evaluating and characterizing graphite materials. The properties and behavior characteristics of graphite which are important to ablative applications were identified and correlated with the applicable NDT methods and techniques during the first year. Emphasis was directed in verification of the applicability of the various NDT techniques and correlation to characterize graphite in relation to service performance has been an item of major concern. Statistical analysis of these correlations has established the significance of the correlations for predicting the related material properties. An extensive analysis of the application of NDT flaw testing and properties evaluation in regard to quality and reliability is presented. A detailed discussion of infrared technique development activities for measuring thermal properties is also presented. The influence of attenuation and the related effects of frequency distortion on velocity measurements is evaluated and described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bibliography contains over 3000 references, including translated items from Japan, West Germany, U.S.S.R., and other countries as well as references of original English language publications of the United States and United Kingdom. The references are categorized by specific fiber and matrix materials. In addition, many references are grouped in the general categories of compatibility studies, theory and design, testing and evaluation, application, and fabrication. A group of references to general review articles is included. The references represent the holdings of the former Defense Ceramic Information Center (DCIC) plus those of the Fibers and Composites Center (FCIC) at Battelle's Columbus Laboratories and MCIC. Book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation

Download or read book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation written by Donald O. Thompson and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992-06-14 with total page 2304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to increase the understanding of damage in composite materials with through-the-thickness reinforcements. As a first step it was necessary to develop new ultrasonic imaging technology to better assess internal damage of the composite. A useful ultrasonic imaging technique has been successfully developed to assess the internal damage of composite panels. The ultrasonic technique accurately determines the size of the internal damage. It was found that the ultrasonic imaging technique was better able to assess the damage in a composite panel with through-the-thickness reinforcements than by destructively sectioning the specimen and visual inspection under a microscope. Microscopic determination of crack location and lengths in a composite panel with through-the-thickness reinforcements was almost impossible. Five composite compression-after-impact panels were tested. The compression-after-impact strength of the panels with the through-the thickness reinforcements was almost twice that of the comparable panel without through-the-thickness reinforcement. Book On Line Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation and Characterization of Tough Ceramics at Operating Temperatures DURIP

Download or read book On Line Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation and Characterization of Tough Ceramics at Operating Temperatures DURIP written by Christian P. Burger and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A grant of $70,000 from AFOSR was used to buy a 600W CO2 laser. This was combined with items bought with supplemental funds from other sources to assemble a facility for characterization of ceramic materials at extremely high temperatures (up to 2000C is anticipated) in air. The system splits the laser beam into two equal components each of which is coupled into its own computer controlled galvanometric scanner that scans the beam rapidly over a central portion of the front or back surface of a flat specimen. The scan rate and scan density is controlled to yield a test volume, in the mid-section of the specimen, that is at uniform temperature and free of thermal stresses. Related research is developing non-contact methods for stain measurements and damage detection within the central volume of material that is at the test temperature. Characterization of material properties and behavior in a wide range of severe environments will be possible with this system. Keywords: Tough ceramics, Non-destructive evaluation, High temperature.
