Book The Quality Teacher Program in the Northern Territory

Download or read book The Quality Teacher Program in the Northern Territory written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is concerned with the quality of school teaching and how best to raise standards in order to maximise student learning. The report is from an evaluation of the effectiveness and quality of the intitiatives funded in 2001 and 2012 under the auspices of the Quality Teacher Program (QTP) in the Northern Territory. A team of researchers from Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) evaluated the effectiveness and quality of the professional development initiatives funded under the NT QTP, and the extent to which the intended outcomes of the QTP had been achieved. It also contributed to the development of a framework for ongoing and sustainable school-based professional development in Northern Territory schools. Specifically, it: identified changes in teacher knowledge and practices which occurred because of access to the QTP teacher professional development; examined the implementation of action learning strategies in the QTP; and collected information on the extent to which the NT QTP met the Commonwealth aims for QTP of lifting the quality of teaching through targeted professional development, and enhancing professional standards and the status of teachers in both government and non-government schools. Book History of Bilingual Education in the Northern Territory

Download or read book History of Bilingual Education in the Northern Territory written by Brian Clive Devlin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first detailed history of the Bilingual Education Program in the Northern Territory of Australia. This ambitious and innovative program began in 1973 and at different times it operated in English and 19 Aboriginal languages in 29 very remote schools. The book draws together the grassroots perspectives of Indigenous and non-Indigenous practitioners and researchers. Each chapter is based on rich practitioner experience, capturing bottom-up aspirations, achievements and reflections on this innovative, yet largely undocumented language and education program. The volume also makes use of a significant collection of ‘grey literature’ documents to trace the history of the program. An ethnographic approach has been used to integrate practitioner accounts into the contexts of broader social and political forces, education policy decisions and on-the-ground actions. Language in education policy is viewed at multiple, intersecting levels: from the interactions of individuals, communities of practice and bureaucracy, to national and global forces. The book offers valuable insights as it examines in detail the policy settings that helped and hindered bilingual education in the context of minority language rights in Australia and elsewhere.

Book The Northern Territory Primary Assessment Program

Download or read book The Northern Territory Primary Assessment Program written by Anne Richards and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document reports the Northern Territory Primary Assessment Program (Australia), which monitors student achievement in reading and mathematics in grades 5 and 7 in urban primary schools and grade 5 to post-primary in Aboriginal schools. The aim of the program is to provide teachers with a set of assessment materials and provide information regarding the academic achievement of students at the end of primary schooling. This study focused on the operation of the program in schools and the perceptions of teachers and other personnel involved with the program. Data were collected by a questionnaire-survey of 185 teachers and school visits to 19 urban schools and 10 rural Aboriginal schools. Results of the study indicate the following: (1) many teachers have little understanding or knowledge of the program; (2) some schools have incomplete sets of materials; (3) teachers expressed doubts about the relevance of certain program materials for classroom use; and (4) only about half of all Aboriginal schools participate in the program. In schools where the program has been properly implemented it makes a valuable contribution; therefore, active participation must be ensured for all schools to take advantage of the program's potential. Appendices include procedures for improving test item quality, interview schedules, sample questionnaires for urban and Aboriginal schools, and a sample program evaluation form. (LP)

Book Teacher Education for High Poverty Schools

Download or read book Teacher Education for High Poverty Schools written by Jo Lampert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume captures the innovative, theory-based, and grounded work being done by established scholars who are interrogating how teacher education can prepare teachers to work in challenging and diverse high-poverty settings. It offers articles from the US, Australia, Canada, the UK and Chile by some of the most significant scholars in the field. Internationally, research suggests that effective teachers for high poverty schools require deep theoretical understanding as well as the capacity to function across three well-substantiated areas: deep content knowledge, well-tuned pedagogical skills, and demonstrated attributes that prove their understanding and commitment to social justice. Schools in low socioeconomic communities need quality teachers most, however, they are often staffed by the least experienced and least prepared teachers. The chapters in this volume examine how pre-service teachers are taught to understand the social contexts of education. Drawing on the individual expertise of the authors, the topics covered include unpacking poverty for pre-service teachers, issues related to urban schooling as well as remote and regional area schooling.

Book Curriculum Pedagogy Assessment and Reporting T 12

Download or read book Curriculum Pedagogy Assessment and Reporting T 12 written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Northern Territory, curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting is governed by the Northern Territory Board of Studies (NTBOS) for Transition to Year 10 and the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) Board for Years 11 to 12. The NTBOS recognises the diverse needs of the schooling sectors and individual school communities that exist throughout the Northern Territory. Factors including geolocation, mobility, cultural heritage, language and other needs, mean that curriculum, pedagogical, assessment and reporting practices will need to be responsive to community specific needs. The NTBOS has a service agreement with the SACE Board of South Australia to offer curriculum and provide assessment and reporting provision for the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET). The SACE policies also apply to the NTCET. This framework provides statements of expectation for all Northern Territory educators to ensure quality education is provided. The guidelines advise school communities on how effective use of curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting processes support schools to implement their explicit improvement agenda. This framework is a reference point from which leaders of Government, Catholic and Independent schools work in partnership with school leadership teams and teachers to implement curriculum, pedagogical, assessment and reporting practices in ways that: support each school in their transition from good to great (McKinsey & Company, 2010) value the professional knowledge of teachers and paraprofessionals, reflect local school contexts and are inclusive of an individual student's family, linguistic, cultural and community background. Book Vocational Education and Training

Download or read book Vocational Education and Training written by Don Zoellner and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-04-05 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first consolidated history of vocational education and training in the Northern Territory. Not only does the story present a chronological account of events, people and institutions, it also offers an explanation of how the system actually works and this has application well beyond the Territory. The mix of historical accounting and operational analysis comes from a unique perspective. It is proposed that the best way to understand the behaviour of the government ministers who have responsibility for vocational training is to compare their decisions and actions with those of wealthy philanthropists.

Book excerpt: More than ever before, the arts are shaping and influencing our daily lives through the media and the creative industries. The arts are no longer confined to museums and theatres, but are adding value to our national economies and improving the quality of education. This has implications for arts education. However, unlike other subjects taught at schools, the arts have rarely made their purpose clear: Why are they taught? What is good arts education? And what are the benefits of teaching creative subjects or using creative ways to teach? In 2004 Professor Anne Bamford conducted the first international analysis of arts education research for UNESCO, in partnership with IFACCA and the Australia Council. Comparing data and case studies from more than 60 countries, the book analyses the differences between 'education in the arts' and 'education through the arts'. While appreciating that arts programmes are embedded in their unique social and cultural contexts, Professor Bamford develops internationally comparable standards for quality arts education. In addition, she identifies a number of concrete educational, cultural, and social benefits of arts education. This definitive work is of major interest to policy-makers, educators and artists. Professor Anne Bamford is Director of the Engine Room at the University of the Arts London and has an international reputation for her research in arts education, emerging literacies and visual communication. Through her research as a World Scholar for UNESCO, she has pursued issues of innovation, social impact and equity and diversity. She has conducted major national impact and evaluation studies for the governments of Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium and Australia.

Book excerpt: Across the world STEM (learning and work in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) has taken central importance in education and the economy in a way that few other disciplines have. STEM competence has become seen as key to higher productivity, technological adaptation and research-based innovation. No area of educational provision has a greater current importance than the STEM disciplines yet there is a surprising dearth of comprehensive and world-wide information about STEM policy, participation, programs and practice. The Age of STEM is a state of the art survey of the global trends and major country initiatives in STEM. It gives an international overview of issues such as: STEM strategy and coordination curricula, teaching and assessment women in STEM indigenous students research training STEM in the graduate labour markets STEM breadth and STEM depth The individual chapters give comparative international analysis as well as a global overview, particularly focusing on the growing number of policies and practices in mobilising and developing talent in the STEM fields. The book will be of particular interest to anyone involved in educational policy, those in education management and leaders in both schooling and tertiary education. It will have a wider resonance among practitioners in the STEM disciplines, particularly at university level, and for those interested in contemporary public policy.
