Book The Purpose and Function of Police Cadet Programs in Medium Sized Police Agencies by the Year 2000

Download or read book The Purpose and Function of Police Cadet Programs in Medium Sized Police Agencies by the Year 2000 written by Leland R. DeVore and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of police cadet recruitment programs on law enforcement agencies by the year 2000 was studied by a nominal group technique panel in Fullerton, California. Five trends were selected as most related to the study: deteriorating quality of public education; unfavorable attitudes toward police work; decrease in the number of qualified applicants; increased minorities; and a major scandal within the police department. Study findings indicate that police cadet programs may be the best police recruitment source. Cadets are involved in almost every area of the police department, assuming roles that would not have been considered previously. The trend toward civilianization has expanded cadet roles within many police organizations. Although most police departments provide formal cadet training programs, the need for training increases as cadets assume more responsibilities. The following policies are recommended: (1) establish a strategic planning group to study the future of police cadet program issues; (2) study local population and growth trends; (3) develop an AIDS education program; (4) begin a minority recruitment program; and (5) develop a program for recruiting high school seniors as police cadets. Strategic and transition management issues in police cadet program implementation are discussed.

Book Multicultural Law Enforcement

Download or read book Multicultural Law Enforcement written by Robert M. Shusta and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In discussing strategies for police work in a diverse society, this book considers the impact of cultural diversity on law enforcement, training in cultural understanding for law enforcement, cultural specifics for law enforcement, response strategies to crimes motivated by hate/bias, and cultural effectiveness for peace officers. Part I introduces readers to the implications of a multicultural society for law enforcement, both within and outside the police agency. Chapters address the challenges of multicultural communities for law enforcement; the changing law enforcement agency as a microcosm of society; and multicultural representation in police recruitment, retention, and promotions. Part II presents information on multiple aspects of cultural awareness training and cross-cultural communication in law enforcement. Two chapters discuss the preparation and implementation of cultural awareness training and cross-cultural communication for law enforcement. Part III presents chapters on police contact with five cultural groups in the United States: Asian/Pacific Americans, African-Americans, Latino/Hispanic Americans, Arab Americans and other Middle Eastern groups, and American Indians. Part IV contains three chapters that explain strategies for preventing, controlling, reporting, tracking, and investigating crimes that are based on hate or bias because of the victim's race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation. Part V highlights some of the themes from previous chapters and discusses broad concepts of the peace officer and cultural diversity.

Book Police Educational Characteristics and Curricula

Download or read book Police Educational Characteristics and Curricula written by Larry T. Hoover and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph consists of an examination of the rationale for higher police educational standards, a report of research relevant to the impact of upgrading efforts, a critique of current educational programming, and the explication of a model criminal justice curriculum appropriate for both police and other criminal justice system personnel. Three distinct but related rationales are developed relevant to educational upgrading. The rationales involve police ability to control crime, perform their order maintenance function, and properly exercise discretion. The research reported includes an assessment of current police recruit educational levels: patterns of employment of collegiate recruits; the impact of the Law Enforcement Education Program, police cadet programs, and agency reward programs; the influence of agency characteristics in attracting and retaining collegiate recruits. and the impact of the development of educational programs in law enforcement and criminal justice. An examination of present educational programming postulates several major deficiencies. A model curriculum is proposed which provides a broad theoretical orientation to the entire criminal justice process. The model consists of guidelines for twenty criminal justice courses. Each guideline includes both selected related readings and a content outline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his capacity as researcher and director of the Police Training Institute at the University of Illinois, Michael T. Charles undertook the difficult task of making needed changes to the police training academy curriculum. In Police Training: Breaking All the Rules, he gives the reader an overview of the history of police training in Illinois and follows with a description of the organizational and cultural changes that he helped to bring about. These include discussions of changes in areas such as method of teaching (pedagogical versus andragogical), discipline (quasi-military versus nonmilitary), and fitness training (morning program versus wellness program). The author also describes the steps taken to redefine student rules and regulations regarding an Honor Code and dress code. He outlines the administrative goal of providing recruits the opportunity to learn to follow orders in an atmosphere of mutual respect, an expectation of success, and team effort. Instructional personnel and staff were key to the process of changing the Institute and its culture. The author relates the actions taken to develop standards of quality including a mission statement, goals, and organizational philosophy. As a result of the director's efforts, the Institute's reputation for quality training, research, and innovation had been greatly enhanced and is now a leader in police training.
