Book The Role of Public Private Partnerships in Health Systems Strengthening

Download or read book The Role of Public Private Partnerships in Health Systems Strengthening written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, the public and private sectors made significant investments in global health, leading to meaningful changes for many of the world's poor. These investments and the resulting progress are often concentrated in vertical health programs, such as child and maternal health, malaria, and HIV, where donors may have a strategic interest. Frequently, partnerships between donors and other stakeholders can coalesce on a specific topical area of expertise and interest. However, to sustain these successes and continue progress, there is a growing recognition of the need to strengthen health systems more broadly and build functional administrative and technical infrastructure that can support health services for all, improve the health of populations, increase the purchasing and earning power of consumers and workers, and advance global security. In June 2015, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop on the role of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in health systems strengthening. Participants examined a range of incentives, innovations, and opportunities for relevant sectors and stakeholders in strengthening health systems through partnerships; to explore lessons learned from pervious and ongoing efforts with the goal of illuminating how to improve performance and outcomes going forward; and to discuss measuring the value and outcomes of investments and documenting success in partnerships focused on health systems strengthening. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Rethinking the Public Private Mix in Higher Education

Download or read book Rethinking the Public Private Mix in Higher Education written by Pedro Teixeira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, we have seen the emergence of private higher education as a global reality. Although there are specific reasons for its appearance in each system, there is also a significant degree of commonality in the context and purposes surrounding the rise of private higher education as an important factor in many systems. The analysis of private higher education has tended to be focused at the national level, often highlighting national peculiarities and variations. In this volume the authors move forward by proposing a unifying and coherent, but flexible, theoretical framework that may be applied in different countries and diverse systems. Hence, the overall goal of this book is to provide a framework for a better understanding of the public-private mix of higher education and a set of policy guidelines in dealing with the expansion of private higher education from a comparative perspective. This analytical framework will be applied to four case-studies (Pakistan, Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay). These cases illustrate the diversity of contexts in the development of private higher education, though they also highlight important commonalities. Based on that analysis, we present some general recommendations to build a more effective policy-framework that takes advantage of the private sector in order to fulfill better the missions of the higher education system.

Book Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination

This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide benefits based on disability: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. This report analyzes health care utilizations as they relate to impairment severity and SSA's definition of disability. Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination identifies types of utilizations that might be good proxies for "listing-level" severity; that is, what represents an impairment, or combination of impairments, that are severe enough to prevent a person from doing any gainful activity, regardless of age, education, or work experience.

Book The New Public private Mix in Health

Download or read book The New Public private Mix in Health written by Jane Goudge and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private health care providers play an increasingly important role in the health systems of many low-income and middle-income countries, easing some of the pressure on governments to provide health care services for all citizens and helping them to overcome funding constraints. The need to regulate the activities of the private sector has become increasingly apparent. However, many countries have little experience of regulation, and in low-income countries the priority of health ministries is to deliver basic health care, rather than implementing what are often "imported" regulatory frameworks.

Book The Political Economy and Media Coverage of the European Economic Crisis

Download or read book The Political Economy and Media Coverage of the European Economic Crisis written by Julien Mercille and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European economic crisis has been ongoing since 2008 and while austerity has spread over the continent, it has failed to revive economies. The media have played an important ideological role in presenting the policies of economic and political elites in a favourable light, even if the latter’s aim has been to shift the burden of adjustment onto citizens. This book explains how and why, using a critical political economic perspective and focusing on the case of Ireland. Throughout, Ireland is compared with contemporary and historical examples to contextualise the arguments made. The book covers the housing bubble that led to the crash, the rescue of financial institutions by the state, the role of the European institutions and the International Monetary Fund, austerity, and the possibility of leaving the eurozone for Europe’s peripheral countries. Through a systematic analysis of Ireland’s main newspapers, it is argued that the media reflect elite views and interests and downplay alternative policies that could lead to more progressive responses to the crisis.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on evidence from a large number of developing countries to assess the impact of market reforms on the provision of education and health services. The contributors show that approaches that seek merely to pass more of their costs to consumers perform less well than is often claimed and that improved cost-effectiveness of health and education systems requires far more than changes in the sources and mechanisms of obtaining finance.

Book Health Economics second edition

Download or read book Health Economics second edition written by Frank A. Sloan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of a textbook that combines economic concepts with empirical evidence, updated with material on the Affordable Care Act and other developments. This book introduces students to the growing research field of health economics. Rather than offer details about health systems without providing a theoretical context, Health Economics combines economic concepts with empirical evidence to enhance readers' economic understanding of how health care institutions and markets function. The theoretical and empirical approaches draw heavily on the general field of applied microeconomics, but the text moves from the individual and firm level to the market level to a macroeconomic view of the role of health and health care within the economy as a whole. The book takes a global perspective, with description and analysis of institutional features of health sectors in countries around the world. This second edition has been updated to include material on the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, material on the expansion of health insurance in Massachusetts, and an evaluation of Oregon's Medicaid expansion via lottery. The discussion of health care and health insurance in China has been substantially revised to reflect widespread changes there. Tables and figures have been updated with newly available data. Also new to this edition is a discussion of the health economics literature published between 2010 and 2015. The text includes readings, extensive references, review and discussion questions, and exercises. A student solutions manual offers solutions to selected exercises. Downloadable supplementary material is available for instructors.
