Book The English People

Download or read book The English People written by Émile Boutmy and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English People: A Study of Their Political Psychology When the publisher of this volume invited me to write a preface to it I felt that there was some measure of presumption in accepting the invitation, there being no need to introduce to the English public the author of the original work, as the following anecdote will testify. Some years ago M. Emile Boutmy received at Oxford the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law, and the way in which the University was moved to confer that distinction upon him was in this wise. Another Frenchman, who had written upon English institutions, thought that the crimson and scarlet of the Oxford doctorate would appropriately adorn his labours. He therefore appealed to M. Boutmy to lay his claims before the academical authorities. But Oxford, better acquainted with the work of the self-effacing advocate than of the less modest claimant, replied to the former in the words of the Puritan maiden of Longfellow's metrical prose, "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?" Book The American People

Download or read book The American People written by A. Maurice Low and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American People: A Study in National Psychology the Harvesting of a Nation The Preacher said, "There is no new thing under the sun," and one who had imbibed much of his wisdom warned that "the master of superstition is the people and in all superstition wise men follow fools: and arguments are fitted to practice in a reversed order." He who journeys in an unknown or little known country must expect that the accounts he brings back of strange peoples and customs will be doubted, for wise men have no more wisdom than fools in their superstition, and against superstition no argument will contend. I was aware when I essayed to explain the psychology of the American People that some of my deductions would be attacked, for my research convinced me that there was much superstition and fable to be overthrown, and some truth to be revealed. It was territory that had not been explored. It was to be expected that I should run counter to popular belief, and that it should appear as if I had sought to be iconoclastic merely for intellectual delight. Book The Psychology of Attention

Download or read book The Psychology of Attention written by Harold Pashler and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999-07-26 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, attention has been one of the most investigated areas of research in perception and cognition. However, the literature on the field contains a bewildering array of findings, and empirical progress has not been matched by consensus on major theoretical issues. The Psychology of Attention presents a systematic review of the main lines of research on attention; the topics range from perception of threshold stimuli to memory storage and decision making. The book develops empirical generalizations about the major issues and suggests possible underlying theoretical principles. Pashler argues that widely assumed notions of processing resources and automaticity are of limited value in understanding human information processing. He proposes a central bottleneck for decision making and memory retrieval, and describes evidence that distinguishes this limitation from perceptual limitations and limited-capacity short-term memory.

He draws upon contemporary French clinical psychology to describe the pathological characteristics of the revolutionary leadership in France and explains many of the events of the period as a consequence of their influence.

Book A People s History of Psychoanalysis

Download or read book A People s History of Psychoanalysis written by Daniel José Gaztambide and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As inequality widens in all sectors of contemporary society, we must ask: is psychoanalysis too white and well-to-do to be relevant to social, economic, and racial justice struggles? Are its ideas and practices too alien for people of color? Can it help us understand why systems of oppression are so stable and how oppression becomes internalized? In A People’s Historyof Psychoanalysis: From Freud to Liberation Psychology, Daniel José Gaztambide reviews the oft-forgotten history of social justice in psychoanalysis. Starting with the work of Sigmund Freud and the first generation of left-leaning psychoanalysts, Gaztambide traces a series of interrelated psychoanalytic ideas and social justice movements that culminated in the work of Frantz Fanon, Paulo Freire, and Ignacio Martín-Baró. Through this intellectual genealogy, Gaztambide presents a psychoanalytically informed theory of race, class, and internalized oppression that resulted from the intertwined efforts of psychoanalysts and racial justice advocates over the course of generations and gave rise to liberation psychology. This book is recommended for students and scholars engaged in political activism, critical pedagogy, and clinical work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology Everyday Life Such being the nature and scope of psychology, the ques tion that next presents itself is: what is the use of psychology? What possible service can it render us to study psychology The answer is not difficult. Our entire waking life is devoted to activities which realize certain aims, to the forming of resolutions or the carrying out of purposes. At least half probably far more than half with most people - of our aims, resolutions, and purposes involve in a greater or less degree reference also to the activities of other people, involve co-operating with other people or opposing them, protecting them or protecting ourselves against them, advising or educating, checking or punishing them. Our whole active life, therefore, may be said to be devoted to the controlling and modifying of our behaviour by ourselves or others, or the controlling and modifying of the behaviour of other people by us, and we study behaviour in order through the better understanding of it to be able better to modify and control it.
