Book excerpt: Hysteria, one of the most diagnosed conditions in human history, is also one of the most problematic. Can it even be said to exist at all? Since the earliest medical texts people have had something to say about 'feminine complaints'. Over the centuries, theorisations of the root causes have lurched from the physiological to the psychological to the socio-political. Thanks to its dual association with femininity and with fakery, the notion of hysteria inevitably provokes questions about women, men, sex, bodies, minds, culture, happiness and unhappiness. To some, it may seem extraordinary that such a contested diagnosis could continue to merit any mention whatsoever. Hysteria Today is a collection of essays whose purpose is to reopen the case for hysteria and to see what relevance, if any, the term may have within contemporary clinical practice.

Book The Major Symptoms of Hysteria

Download or read book The Major Symptoms of Hysteria written by Pierre Janet and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Major Symptoms of Hysteria: Fifteen Lectures Given in the Medical School of Harvard University On the occasion of the inauguration of the new and magnificent buildings of the Medical School of Harvard University in Boston, President Eliot and Dr. J. J. Putnam, professor of the diseases of the nervous system, asked me to deliver before the students some lectures about pathological psychology. I greatly appreciated this honour, and tried to sum up before the American students some elementary psychological researches about a well-known disease, Hysteria, in order to show them how the study of the mental state of the patient can sometimes be useful to explain many disturbances and to give some unity to apparently discordant symptoms. So the following fifteen lectures were given in the Harvard Medical School between the fifteenth of October and the end of November, 1906. Some of these lectures were also delivered in Johns Hopkins University at Baltimore, at the request of Professor J. M. Baldwin, and in the medical school of Columbia University in New York, at that of Professor Allen Starr. I avail myself of the opportunity of this publication to offer my best thanks to these professors and their colleagues for their invitation and hearty welcome. Let me, too, thank here my friend M. Edouard Philippi, for the very useful help he gave me in drawing up these lectures in a foreign language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hysteria and Related Mental Disorders: An Approach to Psychological Medicine deals with the problems of diagnosis and their bearing on management and treatment of hysteria and related hysteriform conditions. This book is composed of 16 chapters, and starts with a description of the etiology and psychopathology of hysteria. These topics are followed by intensive discussions on the clinical manifestations and diagnosis of hysteria and related mental disorders, including neurosis, psychosis, schizophrenia, and multiple personality. Other chapters consider the nature of dissociative phenomena from a structural and dynamic point of view, as well as its significance in understanding the etiology of ego disorders. This book also looks into some aspects of language development, the conversion process, and the features of hysteria as a communicative disorder. The last chapters present several medical cases illustrating the differences between conversion hysteria and psychophysiologic autonomic disorder. These chapters also deal with the types of psychotherapy for hysteria. This book is of great value to psychologists, neurologists, clinicians, and psychotherapists.

Book excerpt: Hysteria—the tormenting of the body by the troubled mind—is among the most pervasive of human disorders; yet, at the same time, it is the most elusive. Freud’s recognition that hysteria stemmed from traumas in the patient’s past transformed the way we think about sexuality. Studies in Hysteria is one of the founding texts of psychoanalysis, revolutionizing our understanding of love, desire, and the human psyche. As full of compassionate human interest as of scientific insight, these case histories are also remarkable, revelatory works of literature. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Hysterical Psychosis written by Katrien Libbrecht and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hysteria as a neurosis seems to have disappeared altogether from the psychiatric manuals; but there are articles here and there, particularly in the United States and France, which advocate the existence of hysteria as a psychosis. Hysterical psychosis is the clinical combination of a hysterical personality with a seemingly psychotic state. Looking back to nineteenth-century psychiatry, Katrien Libbrecht attempts to answer the question: Is there such a thing as a hysterical psychosis or are we dealing with hysteria exhibiting psychotic features? Hysterical Psychosis is divided into three sections. The first part of the book carries the reader back to the second half of the nineteenth century, the heyday of the study of hysteria on the eve of the discovery of psychonanalysis. The second part of the book discusses the implications of the generalized impact of Bleuler's concept of schizophrenia during the interbellum period. The last section of the book deals with the current reemergence of hysterical psychosis from the 1960s to the 1990s. Libbrecht provides a historical survey of the most important psychiatric and psychoanalytic references on hysterical psychosis, as well as a review of current research on the matter. She sheds new light on reasons for the disappearance of the diagnosis of hysteria rn the 1950s and the emergence of the notion of hysterical psychosis during the 1960s. Hysterical Psychosis is a landmark study that is essential for psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, medical practitioners, and historians of psychology.

    Book Details:

This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hysteria is probably the condition which best illustrates the tight connection between neurology and psychiatry. While it has been known since antiquity, its renewed studies during the 19th century were mainly due to the work of Jean-Martin Charcot and his school in Paris. This publication focuses on these early developments, in which immediate followers of Charcot, including Babinski, Freud, Janet, Richer, and Gilles de la Tourette were involved. Hysteria is commonly considered as a condition that often leads to spectacular manifestations (e.g. convulsions, palsies), although both structural and functional imaging data confirm the absence of consistent and reproducible structural lesions. While numerous hypotheses have tried to explain the occurrence of this striking phenomenon, the precise nosology and pathophysiology of hysteria remain elusive. This volume offers an enthralling and informative read for neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists, as well as for general physicians, historians, and everyone interested in the developments of one of the most intriguing conditions in medicine.

Book The Dynamics of Anxiety and Hysteria

Download or read book The Dynamics of Anxiety and Hysteria written by Hans Eysenck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Hans Eysenck applies the principles of modern learning theory to account for the observed phenomena of hysteria and anxiety. Such principles were initially developed through the experiments and theories of Pavlov, Hull, and Tolman. When The Dynamics of Anxiety and Hysteria initially appeared, these were considered the most advanced, relevant, and applicable to the subject matter. They have not been superseded by later work. The Dynamics of Anxiety and Hysteria has never been published in the United States. It was the fifth book Eysenck authored as part of a series of experimental studies and theoretical work carried out under the auspices of the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London. Two of the first four books-Dimensions of Personality and The Psychology of Politics, have been reissued with new introductions. These focus on dimensional analysis of personality based on experimental and empirical studies. The present work, on the other hand, goes beyond classification to a study of dynamics; from nosology to aetiology; from description to causation. Eysenck scientifically explores such topics as learning theory and human behavior, personality and learning theory; personality and perceptual processes, socialization and personality, drugs and personality, and psychological theory and psychiatric practice. This volume, which complements Transaction's other new editions of Eysenck's groundbreaking work, will be of lasting significance to psychologists, psychiatrists, behavioralists, and students of personality disorders. He provided for modern psychology the empirical foundations of themes that previosly were the monopoly of psychoanalysis. Hans J. Eysenck (1916-1997), a professor of psychology at the University of London and the director of its psychological department at the Institute of Psychiatry, was best known for his experimental researches in the field of personality. He was a prolific author and wrote, among others, Rebel with a Cause, Dimensions of Personality, and Intelligence, all available from Transaction.

Book Selected Papers on Hysteria and Other Psychoneuroses

Download or read book Selected Papers on Hysteria and Other Psychoneuroses written by Sigmund Freud and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Papers on Hysteria and Other Psychoneuroses In the first place I wish to express my gratitude to Doctors Frederick Peterson, William A. White, and Ernest Jones, for their many helpful suggestions in the translation of this work. This does not, however, imply that they are in any way responsible for the numerous barbarisms found in the translation, for this I, alone, ask the reader's indulgence. For one thing, it must be borne in mind that, aside from the subject-matter, Freud is not easy to read, even in the original. Indeed, I feel quite certain that only those who have read the original will best appreciate the task of the translator. But no matter how devoid of literary excellencies this translation may be, it can at least claim one merit, to wit, it is a faithful reproduction of the author's thoughts. This is really all that should be required of a translation. The chapters contained in this book were taken from three different volumes of the author's works, published at different intervals within the last fifteen years. Although the first four chapters appear in the "Studien über Hysterie" which was published by Breuer and Freud, still only the first chapter, "The Psychic Mechanism of Hysterical Phenomena," was written conjointly by both authors. The authorship of the other three chapters belongs exclusively to Freud. The remaining six chapters of the book were taken from Freud's Collection of Small Articles. It was by no means an easy task to compile in a single limited volume Freud's theories of the actual- and psychoneuroses. Freud's views are not only new and revolutionary, being based on an entirely new psychology, but unless one is thoroughly familiar with their development one is apt to misunderstand them.
