This book was released on 1995 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess the psychological adjustment of a nonclinical population of adult extra-familial adoptees. The final subject pool consisted of 120 female and 51 male adult adoptees with a mean age of 36 and 34 years old respectively. The vast majority of subjects were either in the process of searching for their biological parentage or had already contacted one or more of their biological relatives. Three facets of psychological adjustment were assessed: (a) overall psychological symptomology was measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory; (b) depression was measured by the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale; and (c) anger was measured by the Anger Content Scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2. Z-tests were utilized for comparisons between the subject population and normative data from each assessment instrument. The results indicate that the sample population reported significantly (p $

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This recent volume is an important resource for instructors, researchers, and clinicians interested in the development of children who have been adopted. Brodzinsky, Smith, and Brodzinsky offer an up-to-date and accessible review of the history of adoption, theoretical perspectives that are used to organize thinking about adoption, and research that has evaluated the adjustment of children who have been adopted. —Journal of Marriage and the Family "The style is confident and authoritative . . . . this is a useful digest which, . . . . provides academics and practitioners with a neat, solid guide to key research in the field." —David Howe, in Child and Family Social Work A significant contribution to understanding the effects of adoption, ChildrenÆs Adjustment to Adoption presents major issues that affect both the process and outcome of adoption for children and their parents. It begins with a historical and contemporary perspective on adoption and then focuses on the various theories that have addressed the issue of psychological risk associated with adoption. Extensive coverage is provided on the adjustment of children and parents to adoption itself and on the psychological development including adjustment and maladjustment over the course of childhood and adolescence. Children whose adoptions emerge from such circumstances as child abuse, parental drug use, and parental HIV are closely examined as are adoptions across racial and cultural lines. This volume offers extensive coverage of theory and research on children and families and the contextual issues pertinent to the adoption process, with clinical vignettes punctuating key points. The authors close with a discussion of intervention and assessment issues that commonly arise when working with adoptees and their families. ChildrenÆs Adjustment to Adoption is a welcome addition to the current literature on the psychological issues associated with adoption. It will be valuable for professionals in the fields of clinical and counseling psychology, developmental psychology, nursing, social work, health services, and family studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most mental health and behavioral health professionals have encountered adoption triad members—birth parents, adoptive parents, and adopted persons—in their clinical practice, the vast majority have had no formal or informal training on adoption issues. The Handbook of Adoption: Implications for Researchers, Practitioners, and Families is the first book to specifically address the many dimensions of adoption-related issues which can and do affect adoption triad members, specifically in the United States. Key Features: Includes contributions from nationally known experts: Prominent authors who are directly involved in adoption-related research and practice provide insight from personal and professional experience. Theory and real-life examples come together in the "Treatment Issues" and in the "Training and Education" sections of each chapter. Book Heredity and Environment in 300 Adoptive Families

Download or read book Heredity and Environment in 300 Adoptive Families written by Joseph Horn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of a thirty-five-year research project involving 300 families, each of whom adopted at least one child at birth from a Texas home for unwed mothers during the period of 1962-1970. The book weaves together information about the birth parents of the adopted children; information about the adoptive parents; and information about the children in these families. Children adopted at birth have two sets of parents. Birth parents provide their adopted-away child with a genetic endowment, but do not participate in shaping the child's environment. Adoptive parents do not contribute genetically, but are otherwise in charge of directing the child's development. If adopted children grow up to resemble birth parents they have never seen, the clear inference is that hereditary factors have had an influence. Environmental factors are implicated whenever children resemble their adoptive parents, but not the birth parents. The Texas Adoption Project was designed to investigate the impact of genetic and environmental factors. This unique and innovative longitudinal study is written for specialists and the educated public. An introductory guide is provided for the non-specialist reader explaining the form and statistical content of the tables. Additional technical material for specialists is contained in appendices. This important contribution to the literature on adoption will also be of interest to those interested in the relative weight of genetics and environment in human development.

Book Social and Emotional Adjustment and Family Relations in Ethnic Minority Families

Download or read book Social and Emotional Adjustment and Family Relations in Ethnic Minority Families written by Ronald D. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses issues related to the intersection of family relationships and several contexts for the social and emotional development of ethnic minority adolescents. The papers are organized in sections under subtitles which reflect three contextual frames through which these issues may be examined. The first section focuses on the relationship between economic factors and resources on the one hand and family relations as environments for development on the other. The next part focuses on family and peer networks and relations as contexts for the emotional and social development of adolescents. The last section takes neighborhood and school as contexts for and determinants of social and emotional adjustment in adolescence. Like much of the extant work and current thought concerning development in ethnic minority children and adolescents, the authors have highlighted the more stressful and negative aspects of these several contexts. There are a few explicit and several implicit references made to supportive and more positive contexts and manifestations of relationships which frame the developmental experiences of ethnic minority adolescents. These serve as a reminder that many ethnic minority adolescents do overcome the odds against success and grow into healthy and wholesome adults. However, in large measure, this book is a contribution to our understanding of the problematic circumstances under which a significant segment of the population exists, reminding us that life for ethnic minority adolescents is difficult. The fact that some of these young people manage to overcome the negative and stressful aspects of their experiences and defy the implicit prediction of failure to thrive is truly remarkable.
