L. Hendrickson, then of Chicago, now of Yale. Added to this was the curiosity which any anonymous document must inspire, especially one of literary, historical, or even merely antiquarian interest. I desire to record my gratitude to the Bibliotecario of the Biblioteca Civica, Bergamo, Italy, for ready and courteous assistance given me while a student there, and later; to Dr. B. L. Ullman, of the University of Chicago, particularly for material gathered by him while abroad; to Professor G. J. Laing and Dr. C. H. Beeson, of the University of Chicago, for timely assistance and valuable criticism; and especially to Professor Hendrickson, at whose suggestion, and under whose direction, the work was done.
