Book excerpt: As well as the name of a virus, a corona is a crown, the pearly glow around the sun in certain astronomical conditions and a poetic form where interlinking lines connect a sequence. It is the perfect name therefore for this new collection of 150 poems by the bestselling poet Malcolm Guite, each one written in response to the Bible’s 150 psalms as they appear in William Coverdale’s timeless translation. The Psalms express every human emotion with disarming honesty, as anger and thankfulness alike are directed at God. All of life is here with its moments of beauty and its times of despair and shame. Like the Psalms themselves, the poems do not avoid the cursing and glorying over the downfall of your enemies, but wrestle honestly with them as we do when we come to say them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the concept of loving law sound strange to you—like two things that just don’t go together? Christians today often don’t want to read about law because they would rather revel in gospel and grace. Yet the Bible clearly links law with love, a connection we see in Psalm 119. In these insightful meditations, author Glenda Mathes sheds light on this “long psalm that often gets short shrift.” A closer look at Psalm 119, in particular, and several other psalms and Old and New Testament passages encourages readers to discover the delight of God’s written Word and rejoice in loving His law.

Book The Case for the Psalms

Download or read book The Case for the Psalms written by N. T. Wright and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as the modern C. S. Lewis, N. T. Wright, one of the world’s most trusted and popular Bible scholars and the bestselling author of Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope, presents a manifesto urging Christians to live and pray the Bible’s Psalms in The Case for the Psalms. Wright seeks to reclaim the power of the Psalms, which were once at the core of prayer life. He argues that, by praying and living the Psalms, we enter into a worldview, a way of communing with God and knowing him more intimately, and receive a map by which we understand the contours and direction of our lives. For this reason, all Christians need to read, pray, sing, and live the Psalms. By providing the historical, literary, and spiritual contexts for reading these hymns from ancient Israel’s songbook, The Case for the Psalms provides the tools for incorporating these divine poems into our sacred practices and into our spirituality itself.

Book God s Unusual Saints

Download or read book God s Unusual Saints written by Edward J. Hahnenberg and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-05-23 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gods Unusual Saints examines the lives of several saints in the Catholic Church. Recognized as living heroically holy lives by the Churchs early tradition, or canonized by Popes in later times, these men and women displayed qualities that reflect the unique call of God to unusual lives of sanctity. As in the case of anomalies in the physical universe which at first glance seems to be an extremely ordered creation, so too in the Church, there are canonized saints who do not seem to fit the traditional ideas of what a saint should be. Yet their lives give witness to the ever creative ways God leads his own to heaven. Their lives should inspire all of us that sanctity is always possible in this life in spite of our foibles or failures as humans.

Book Praying Curses

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Nehrbass
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2013-06-21
  • ISBN : 162032749X
  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Praying Curses written by Daniel Nehrbass and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-06-21 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public reading of the psalms facilitates corporate worship, but it can also create a degree of awkwardness as a number of passages in the Psalter contain curses, asking God to avenge enemies. The presence of vengeful speech seems antithetical to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. What are these psalms really about? This book recovers the value of imprecatory speech in Scripture, arguing that such passages continue to be relevant today, both in preaching and therapy. The interpretive model Nehrbass suggests is that of dependence: these psalms transfer the burden of one's enemies to God and affirm that it is God's prerogative alone to avenge. The authors of the imprecatory psalms were victims of violence, so this book looks to contemporary victims of violence for their interpretation and application of these psalms. This study is decidedly practical. Nehrbass examines the nature of anger and hatred and highlights some of the redemptive aspects of these emotions. He concludes that the imprecatory psalms offer several positive aspects for dealing with hatred. Use of these passages fosters in believers a passion for God's reputation and can also aid us in surrendering our problems to God's control.
