Book excerpt: The rehabilitation, by St. Pope Paul VI, of African traditional religions and cultures has made them more objective for theological and anthropological reflection. And the reflecting subject is a native African himself. And the repatriation of missiology into ecclesiology in the Catholic Church in the 21st Century is a new development; and the result if it is what we have before us in this book. Here personal native anthropological and theological experience has combined with in-depth reading of the African novelists’ necessarily biased distillation of African culture has nourished thinking and reflection at a new level in terms of ecclesial implications of living Christianity authentically and being and building the Church in my father’s home.

Download or read book Legal Pluralism in Central Asia written by Mahabat Sadyrbek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legal Pluralism in Central Asia reports on historical, anthropological and legal research which examines customary legal practices in Kyrgyzstan and relates them to wider societal developments in Central Asia and further afield. Using the term legal pluralism, the book demonstrates that there is a spectrum of approaches, available avenues, forms of local law and indigenous popular justice in Kyrgyzstan’s predominantly rural communities, which can be labelled living law. Based on her extensive original research, Mahabat Sadyrbek shows how contemporary peoples systematically address challenging problems, such as disputes, violence, accidents, crime and other difficulties, and thereby seek justice, redress, punishment, compensation, readjustment of relations or closure. She demonstrates that local law, expressed through ritually structured communicative exchange, through dictums and proverbs with binding characters and different legal practices or processes undertaken in specific ways, deem the solutions appropriate and acceptable. The reader is thereby enabled to see the law in people’s deepest assumptions and beliefs, in codes of shame and honour, in local mores and ethics as well as in religious terms. In this way, the book reveals the dynamic, changing and living character of law in a specific context and in a region hitherto insufficiently researched within legal anthropology.

Download or read book Psalmody and Poetry in Old Testament Ethics written by Dirk J. Human and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions arise from scholarly debate in Hebrew Bible ethics such as: what is Old Testament ethics?, what is the object of study?, what are the methods involved and how normative are Old Testament ethics for modern contexts? These questions advance crucial issues in the quest for understanding ethics of the ancient Hebrew mind and the problem of how to contextualize them in modern contexts. This book begins by exploring the relationship between the Old Testament and Ethics, as well as a philosophical discussion on meta-ethical presuppositions on divinity and morality in the Psalter. The main part of the book reflects analyses of specific psalms (Pss 16; 34; 50; 72; 104; and 133). The core of this section reflects an illustration of psalm texts with the thematic focus on Hebrew ethical thinking. Included are a few contextual contributions discussing relevant ethical issues in Africa from an African perspective. In the final section two exemplary poetic texts from the Pentateuch (Deut 32) and the Prophets (Jer 5) reverberate ethical thinking from other parts of the Hebrew canon.
