Book Thomas Cranmer s Doctrine of Repentance Renewing the Power to Love

Download or read book Thomas Cranmer s Doctrine of Repentance Renewing the Power to Love written by Ashley Null and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-04-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-serving lacky, self-deceiving puppet, Swiss Protestant partisan, or sensible Erasmian humanist: which, if any, was Thomas Cranmer? For centuries historians have offered often bitterly contradictory answers. Although Cranmer was a key participant in the changes to English life brought about by the Reformation, his reticent nature and lack of extensive personal writings have left a vacuum that in the past has too often been filled by scholarly prejudice or presumption. For the first time, however, this book examines in-depth little used manuscript sources to reconstruct Cranmer's theological development on the crucial Protestant doctrine of justification. The author explores Cranmer's cultural heritage, why he would have been attracted to Luther's thought, and then provides convincing evidence for the Reformed Protestant Augustinianism which Cranmer enshrined in the formularies of the Church of England. For Cranmer the glory of God was his love for the unworthy; the heart of theology was proclaiming this truth through word and sacrament. Hence, the focus of both was on the life of on-going repentance, remembering God's gracious love inspired grateful human love.

Book The Case for Catholicism

Download or read book The Case for Catholicism written by Trent Horn and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and thorough defense of the Catholic Church against Protestant objections in print. This book is especially relevant as the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation draws near and discussion of the arguments made against the Church during that time in history receive renewed interest. The Case for Catholicism answers arguments put forward by early Reformers like Luther and Calvin as well as contemporary defenders of Protestantism like Norm Geisler and R.C. Sproul. It provides a meticulous defense of the biblical and historical nature of Catholic doctrines from Scripture and church history. Finally, in both answering Protestant objections to Catholicism and in providing evidence for the Faith,The Case for Catholicism cites modern Protestant scholars who question Reformation assumptions and show how evidence from Scripture and church history support aspects of Catholic theology. This book is divided into four sections, with each answering a key question Christians have asked about the nature of their faith. Those key questions are: What is my authority? What is the Church? How am I saved?Who belongs to the body of Christ? The Case for Catholicism will become a reliable, resource for any Catholic who desires a well-researched, readable, and persuasive answer to Protestant arguments made against the Catholic faith.

This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholicism or Protestantism: Where is the true Christian doctrine? A quick and easy guide to help Catholics answer common objections to Catholic teachings. A thorough discussion of the points of difference is what is chiefly required by bona fide inquirers from without the fold, and to such inquirers, this book is dedicated. It is hoped that to such inquirers no expression in this book will appear aggressive. In the impersonal atmosphere of a book of this kind, plain speaking is required and permissible, but there was far from the mind of the author any intention to be unkind or uncharitable. The attacks upon erroneous belief should not be misunderstood to be attacks on erroneous believers. Also to inquirers from within the fold this book will be helpful, in enlightening them upon important matters of faith, and in enabling them to enlighten others who, with a good will, ask them for information.

Download or read book With One Accord written by Douglas M. Beaumont and published by Catholic Answers Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apostles and early Christians believed and worshiped in unity-in doctrine and practice following Jesus' wish that "they may be one" (John 17:21). But today, Christianity is splintered by the Reformation and its 500-year legacy of division, with Protestant groups divided among themselves and separated from Catholicism by a set of seemingly non-negotiable differences. Traditionally, Catholic apologetics has tried to bridge that separation by using Scripture, history, and logic to help Protestants see the truth of Church teaching. In With One Accord, former Evangelical professor Douglas Beaumont takes another approach: working for accord with Protestants by reasoning from the things they already believe and do. Using principles that orthodox, Bible-believing Protestants broadly affirm, he arrives at particulars of Catholic belief, showing that in many cases the division isn't as wide or deep as we thought. Splitting the difference between ecumenism and apologetics, With One Accord is a sign of hope for Christian unity and a great resource Catholics looking to have friendly and productive conversations with their Protestant friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short and Familiar Answers to the Most Common Objections Urged Against Religion HE diverse and incoherent doctrines of the various Protestant sects, without any point of agreement among themselves except oppo sitiou to the Catholic Church, have in great measure paved the way for the propagators of the shallow materialism which, although it has no root in our intellect or affections, is now, nevertheless, the greatest obstacle to the spread of Christian truth. The incoherence of Protestantism has lent a deceptive glare to the bold assumptions of men who, however respectable in their own domain of material science, lower themselves to the level of the merest charlatans when they deal with the great questions of religion.
