The industrious propagation in the Christian world of these two arrogant and comprehensive claims taken together, may be considered as the great master spring which has for many ages kept the complicated machine of popery in action. Indeed every thorough bred Papist appears to have sucked in these two arrogant pretensions as it were with his mother's milk; so that you may almost as well attempt to change his nature, as his opinion on these points. When at Rome, I had the pleasure of being intimately acquainted with a Roman priest, the father of a convent, an amiable and most excellent man, who would have done credit to any Church; and for a Romish priest, well informed; for Romish priests, by chiefly confining themselves to their own writers, are seldom so well informed on ecclesiastical matters as they otherwise might be. With this worthy man I had several interesting conversations on the unhappy differences subsisting between our respective Churches. The infallibility of the Pope he readily gave up. And of many of the corruptions and absurd practices of the Romish Church he was so heartily ashamed, as to decline any attempt to defend them. But when we came to the sovereign articles of the Pope's supremacy, and the universality of his Church, we stuck fast: every thing that I could say proving unable to produce the least alteration in his opinion. It appeared to be a perfectly settled point with him. It was so, and it must be so. But these arrogant claims, however strenuously and perseveringly insisted upon, have been taken for granted, rather than proved; nay, as every well-informed person knows, they are not capable of being proved. By exploring important connections between religion, politics and identity, and asking broad questions about the character of religion in Britain, the contributions put into context many of the big issues of the day. From the beliefs of the Jacobite rebels, to the notions of liberty and toleration, to the attitudes to the French Wars, the book makes an unambiguous and forceful statement about the centrality of religion to any proper understanding of British public life between the Restoration and the Reform Bill.
