Book The Pronunciation of Greek

Download or read book The Pronunciation of Greek written by Elizabeth A. S. Dawes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pronunciation of Greek: With Suggestions for a Reform in Teaching That Language The rise of the Greek nation from its long bondage, and its rapid progress in general development, in political importance, in commerce and in education during the last fifty years, reveals an inherent tenacity and vigour of life which has scarcely ever been witnessed in any other people. The rapid means of communication has also brought Greece within easy access of Western Europe, and the once distant country is readily visited by numerous travellers, either for mere pleasure, or to study the relics which still attest the former supremacy of Greece in art and architecture. This new intercourse with a nation whose literature has had so much influence on the world at large, and is the fons et origo of so much of its intellectual development, has led many scholars, especially in Germany and Holland, to reconsider the question of the proper pronunciation of the language, and to study the language as at present spoken and written in Greece itself. The scholars of England can hardly be said to have fairly turned their attention to this subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Greek language is stamped by time, that great prover of men and things, as the most perfect whichever fell from the lips of man. Download or read book A Key to the Classical Pronunciation of Greek Latin and Scripture Proper Names Classic Reprint written by John Walker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Key to the Classical Pronunciation of Greek, Latin, and Scripture Proper Names The Critical Pronouncing Dictionary of the English Language naturally suggested an idea of the present work. Proper names from the Greek and Latin form so considerable a part of every cultivated living language, that a Dictionary seems to be imperfect without them. Polite scholars, indeed, are seldom at a loss for the pronunciation of words they so frequently meet with in the learned languages; but there are great numbers of respectable English scholars, who, having only a tincture of classical learning, are much at a loss for a knowledge of this part of it. It is not only the learned professions that require this knowledge, but almost every one above the merely mechanical. The professors of painting, statuary, and music, and those who admire their works - readers of history, politics, poetry - all who converse on subjects ever so little above the vulgar, have so frequent occasion to pronounce these proper names, that whatever tends to render this pronunciation easy must necessarily be acceptable to the Public. The proper names in Scripture have still a higher claim to our attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Erasmian Pronunciation of Greek and Its Precursors, Jerome Aleander, Aldus Manutius, Antonio of Lebrixa: A Lecture But we have to consider him to-day not as a great educator or as a polymath, or as a theologian, but as a philologist, the discoverer of a new subject of philological inquiry, the ancient pronunciation of the two classical languages. His claim to priority is indisputable, as he had certainly announced his theory at least a quarter of a century before the appearance of the Dialogue of Erasmus. In our present dearth of biographical and bibliographical data, it is difficult to determine how and when the idea first dawned on him. As for the idea itself, no great power of divination was needed to discover it; it was a direct and natural corollary from the fundamental assumption of the New Learning. Once admitted that there was an ancient mode of writing, it was only natural to suppose that there must have been also an ancient mode of speaking; 'back to the ancients' meant a return to that, as well as a return to their language and style. As far as Latin was concerned, the question of the ancient pronunciation was inevitable; it was observed that each nation had its own pronunciation of Latin, and it was clear that they could not be all of them right, and also that no one of them spoke it in the way described by Quintilian as the normal and correct way. \vith Greek, however, there was 110 such diversity of pronunciations. It had come to the Westerns as an exotic language, with a conventional uniformity of pronunciation, a standard fixed by the speech of the learned Byzantines, who were the first teachers of the language in the West.
