Book The Promotion of Continence in Adult Nursing

Download or read book The Promotion of Continence in Adult Nursing written by David Colborn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prime motivation for this book has come from my ex perience with those who suffer from incontinence and from my contact, both in the clinical area and as a teacher, with those who care for them. Over the years I have developed a pas sionate interest in the subject and there is little doubt that in general terms the level of knowledge and awareness relating to the topic has increased. Despite this it is still apparent that continence promotion remains a somewhat fringe subject, both in practice and in theory. One of the difficulties which has become clear from discussion with nurses of all grades is that they feel that the only people who are capable of mastering the practicalities of continence promotion are full time continence advisers. It is unlikely that this view has stemmed from con tinence advisers themselves (those that I know are usually very grateful for all the help that they can get), or even from a reluctance on the part of nursing staff to develop their skills. The root of the difficulty appears to be a lack of awareness on the part of nurses of the skills that are required for continence promotion and also how they can be put into practice. The aim of this book is to provide a reference text to enable all practising nurses to take an active part in continence pro motion and the appropriate management of incontinence.

Book Management of Fecal Incontinence for the Advanced Practice Nurse

Download or read book Management of Fecal Incontinence for the Advanced Practice Nurse written by Donna Z. Bliss and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the current management of fecal incontinence from an advanced practice nursing perspective. It fills a gap in nursing knowledge promoting and showcasing the expertise and significant contribution of advanced practice nurses whose role is so important in the health care system. Authors’ objectives are to disseminate information about evidenced-based nursing care for the incontinent patient to improve outcomes and quality of life as well as to instruct nurses involved in continence care to practice at a high quality level. The book is structured in chapters, starting by explaining fecal incontinence and its impact on quality of life. The second chapter discusses advanced practice continence nursing. The epidemiology of fecal incontinence is reviewed to provide an appreciation of the scope of the problem. Normal defecation and mechanisms to ensure continence are reviewed to improve understanding of the alterations resulting in fecal incontinence. The next chapters focus on assessment, diagnosis and management of fecal incontinence in various patient groups which parallels the delivery of care. Since surgery is a treatment option in some cases, a chapter explains surgical approaches and the postoperative nursing care. As skin damage is the most common complication of fecal incontinence there is a chapter about management of these associated problems. The last chapter addresses managing fecal incontinence in the patient with urinary continence also. Practice related chapters include a case study. All chapters highlight key information in a box or table. The intended readers are international advanced practice nurses who care for patients with incontinence as well as continence nurse specialists practicing at a general level. General nurses interested in continence care might also be interested in reading the book. Other disciplines who are part of the healthcare team may be interested in learning more about role of the advanced practice nurse.

This book was released on 1998-02-04 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These guidelines were developed as part of the NHS Executive Consensus Strategy for Major Clinical Guidelines. The methods used for the production of the guidelines were (i) a systematic review of the literature on incontinence and continence promotion and (ii) a multidisciplinary consensus conference of invited experts and clinicians in continence care and consumers of continence services.Since advances in health care may soon outdate current methods, the guidelines do not aim to direct the practitioner to specific named treatments. Rather, the aim is to aid clinicians in making decisions about purchasing and providing appropriate continence services in Primary Care.

It has been written and edited by a team of experienced nurses, mainly from the UK, although there are contributions from Australia. It is written for nurses by nurses and thus focuses on the issues that are important to nurses. Today's nurses need a wide range of knowledge and skills to be able to think critically and reflect on their experience in order to develop professionally and personally. The U.K. textbook provides a comprehensive source of information about adult nursing that is patient-focused, holistic and evidence-based. The book has 35 chapters arranged in 4 sections. Section 1 - Nursing, quality and communication addresses the nature of adult nursing and the importance of quality management and standards of care. Communication and interpersonal skills are explored with activities designed to help you develop your own skills. Section II - Common nursing issues covers the clinical issues and problems that are encountered by most nurses working in most settings. Issues such as pain, stress, nutrition, infection control, sleep, wound management, and continence. Section III - Nursing patients with common disorders focuses on specific conditions grouped under functional systems (e.g. blood disorders). Each chapter includes an overview of relevant anatomy & physiology and medical treatments but the focus is on assessment and nursing management, patient teaching and health promotion. Section IV - Specific areas of adult nursing looks at the more specialized areas of practice, such as peri-operative nursing, caring for older adults and caring for the critically ill.
