Pencil, but when he is weighed in the cook's balances, the verdict is, guilty of murder in the first degree. Adam, per 36, may have raised his eyebrows at Eve's perception of his humor ous remarks in the Hebrew tongue. Yea, he may have sworn at her needlecraft, but the poor, miserable sinner was like the rest of us'pan-handle brigadiers, an appalling failure with the rolling ladle and the soup pin. Book The Golden Age Cook Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Golden Age Cook Book Classic Reprint written by Henrietta Latham Dwight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Age Cook Book Lately I have been in the city of Chicago-one of the greatest slaughter - houses of the world - where the slaughter men, who are employed from early morn till late at night in the killing of thousands of these hapless creatures, are made a class practically apart from their fellow-men; they are marked outby the police as the most dangerous part of the community; amongst them are committed most crimes of violence, and the most ready use of the knife is found. One day l was speaking to an authority on this subject, and I asked him how it was that he knew so decidedly that most of the murders and the crimes with the knife were perpetrated by that particular class of men, and his answer was suggestive, although horrible. He said: 'there is a peculiar turn of the knife which men learn to use in the slaughter-house, for, as the living creatures are brought to them by machinery, these men slit their throats as they pass by. That twist of the wrist is the characteristic of most crimes with the knife committed amongst our Chicago population.' That struck me at once as both a horrible and significant fact. What right have people to condemn other men to a trade that makes them so readily take to the knife in anger; which marks them out as specially brutalized - brutes amongst their fellow - men? Being constantly in the sight and the smell of blood, their whole nature is coarsened; accustomed to kill thousands of creatures, they lose all sense of reverence for sentient life, they grow indifferent to the suffering they contin ually see around them; accustomed to inflict pain, they grow callous to the sight of pain; accustomed to kill swiftly, and sometimes not even waiting until the creature is dead before the skin is stripped from it, their nerves become coarsened, hardened, and brutalized, and they are less men as men because they are slaughterers of animals. And everyone who eats flesh meat has part in that brutalization everyone who uses what they provide is guilty of this degradation of his fellow-men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mrs. Henry J. Chase's Cook Book: A Book of Proven Recipes The last century has been pre-eminently an age of science. This scientific spirit arising in the laboratory, has permeated all our departments of living. A girl no longer learns how to keep house. She studies domestic science. The science of cookery, based on the laws of chemistry, has replaced the old hit or miss methods of the natural cooks. In preparing this second volume of recipes, I have aimed to make the directions as explicit as possible. They come from excellent cooks and are all reliable, so believing them to be of real value I dedicate them to that sorely tried individual - The Young Housekeeper. Book The New Great American Writers Cookbook

Download or read book The New Great American Writers Cookbook written by Dean Faulkner Wells and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cookery -- American Literature Published in 1981, "The Great American Writers Cookbook" was a treasure trove of recipes submitted by the country's most celebrated authors. This all-new collection, a fine follow-up for a new era, features recipes that range from peanut butter sandwiches to eggplant caviar, with dishes-and anecdotes-offered by writers of every imaginable stripe, ethnicity, region, and culture in America. Contemporary novelists such as National Book Award winners Jonathan Franzen and the late, great Bernard Malamud share space with columnists Dave Barry, P. J. O'Rourke, and Christopher Buckley, with journalists and novelists Andrei Codrescu, Anna Quindlen, and John Berendt, and with poet and novelist Sandra Cisneros. The interspersing of recipes from older and younger generations reveals cookery as creatively diverse as the writings from David Guterson, T. C. Boyle, Elizabeth McCracken, and former First Lady Barbara Bush. This unusually tangy assortment of more than 150 recipes runs the gamut from tofu to heart-clogging chili. Writers play fast and loose with ingredients and forewarn readers planning to try them that some of the most seductive recipes are loaded with cholesterol. With such temptations as "Thighs of Delight," "Crevettes Desir," a "sexy spaghetti sauce," and a lemon icebox pie that allegedly elicits proposals of marriage, the recipes-and stories revealing their origins-is enticing, bizarre, and promisingly tasty. The collection gives particular emphasis to contemporary southern writers-Padgett Powell, Jack Butler, Larry Brown, Ellen Gilchrist, and Josephine Humphreys, among others, although their recipes are often far from being quintessentially "Southern." Scintillating with writerly antics and witty histories as transfixing as the recipes themselves, "The New Great American Writers Cookbook" is not just for daring cooks. It's also a collector's item for food-doting lovers of American literature. Dean Faulkner Wells lives and writes in Oxford, Mississippi. She is the editor of "The Great American Writers Cookbook," "The Best of Bad Faulkner," "The Great American Politicians Cookbook," and "Ghosts of Rowan Oak." Her work has been published in the "Paris Review," "Parade," "Playboy," "Ladies' Home Journal," "Southern Living," and other periodicals. Julia Reed is a senior writer at "Vogue" and a contributor to the "New York Times" magazine, writing about food.

Book Food and Cookery Classic Reprint

Download or read book Food and Cookery Classic Reprint written by Hans Steele Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food and Cookery In presenting Food and Cookery to the public, it is not to add another cookbook to the many now in the hands of the perplexed housewives of America. This is the fourth and enlarged edition of a little work which has already made its way; and for this edition, hundreds of orders are already filed. There is a demand for the book from those who know the first editions. There is a moral demand for the ih formation it contains, in these days of world food scarcity and the need of wise food conservation, when the best food for the least money is called for. The recipes are not prepared by a tyro, nor gathered from miscellaneous collections, nor compounded merely to please the taste. The author has had a score of years of experience in every stage of cooking science and practical work, from mere helper to the chef. He has served for years under German and Swiss and Spanish and English and French chefs. For a year, he was second cook in the Calumet Club of Chicago, where he served European royalty; and for nearly the same length of time, in the California Club of Los Angeles; and he has also served in like capacity in many leading hotels in various cities. For the last ten years, Mr. Anderson has given himself to the better side of the question, - healthful, palatable, scientific, economical cookery. These recipes are all tested and tried, and retested and tried in connection with experienced chemical, medical, practical collaborators, in the Medical Missionary College and Sanitarium of Loma Linda, California, in which Mr. Anderson is food expert. In highest confidence, we send the little book forth as a friend in the homes of a larger public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
