The primary consideration is whether such a fundamental difference as I affirm really exists between the pointed architecture of the Ile de France and all other pointed styles. The question can be determined only by a systematic examination and comparison such as I have attempted in this book. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Cathedral of the Nineteenth Century It is not many years since the Lancet style enjoyed extensive popularity with the fabricators of cheap churches, on account of the unhappy reputation which it enjoyed of surviving more starvation than any other. It was emphatically the cheap style, and in the hands into which it fell it as often emphatically proved itself to be the nasty one. Cheap churches are still built, and it is well that they should be where funds are not abundant; but increase of ex perience has shown that ugliness need not be synony mous with economy, and that the First Pointed style properly handled enjoys no peculiar immunity from contingent expenses. Its advocates need no longer fear, nor its antagonists rely upon, the blunders and abortions of the years when Early English was the rage. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent English Ecclesiastical Architecture In planning a modern church it is the business of the architect to discover the general lines which will produce the best possible building under given conditions. Oi these conditions, those of cost, of situation, and of material are in very few cases exactly alike. But, as our churches are built for a definite purpose, there are certain conditions of space and arrangement which should in no case be disregarded. The publications referred to have left little to be said upon these matters, yet it is obvious from what we see every day that the existence of a fairly well understood set of rules does not ensure our possessing a worthy architecture. To secure this, our architects must cultivate their imagination and their sense of proportion; above all, they must take pains. The most hopeless of our modern churches are not so often the work of inexperienced men as the routine productions of diocesan surveyors' ofiices. In the largest collection hitherto published, that by Mr Palev. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the History of English Church Architecture Prior to the Separation of England From the Roman Obedience It is no matter of accident that churches were built in a certain form and in a certain style at a certain date. It is possible to give a reason for this, in every case, and to trace back the cause of any particular fashion of church building, step by step, to the origin of christian art, which is one with the origin of the christian Church. Book An Introduction to English Church Architecture from the Eleventh to the Sixteenth Century Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to English Church Architecture from the Eleventh to the Sixteenth Century Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Francis Bond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to English Church Architecture, From the Eleventh to the Sixteenth Century, Vol. 1 One specially novel feature should be mentioned. The treatment of the main constructional subjects is throughout analytical. But even if this treatment is fairly adequate, no student can arrive at the end of such chapters as those on vaulting. Abutments, window tracery, roofs, etc., without considerable mental strain. If he has read faithfully, and looked up his cross-references as he should have done, there may remain with him a bird's-eye view of the whole subject; but he is very far from grasp or mastery. What he ought to do is to read the chapter straightway a second and even a third time. This, however, cannot be expected of a jaded reader; he wants a change, not a second helping of fish, but an omelette or an entree. Such a change is now provided. The more important subjects, after being treated analytically, are then discussed over again, but in the concrete, rag, after 106 pages setting forth the science and art of vault construction, fifty-seven individual vaults are selected for study, and are dissected separately. If the reader will turn to these, he will find all the principles of construction which he has read about in the text set forth over again, but in such different fashion that he will hardly notice that the new dish is after all but a réchauffé. This application of the concrete method of study, aided by a c0pious apparatus of diagrams, has not been attempted before, and, it is believed, will be found really helpful. Nor will the readers for whom this book has been prepared be likely to complain that here and there it is a good deal more than a treatise on building construction. It is good for those who are to be introduced to medizeval church architecture to know not only how a church was built, but why it was built, who built it, who served in it, who worshipped in it, and what manner of worship was theirs - Ancient or Modern. Accordingly, much space has been devoted in the introductory chapters to matters of human interest, before plunging into stones and mortar. Book The English Parish Church

Download or read book The English Parish Church written by J. Charles Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Parish Church: An Account of the Chief Building Types of Their Materials During Nine Centuries An endeavour too is made in these pages to set forth, after a succinct fashion, the undoubted but often forgotten fact that our ancestors, whilst regarding the church as primarily devoted to the worship of God and to the continuous round of the expression of their highest Faith, considered that the soul and body were so intimately connected that they habitually used the nave for purposes which we call secular or civil. All this tended in the direction of every class uniting in the maintenance and development of the parish church. More than usual attention is herein given to the Materials from which our churches were constructed, and how their shape and size so largely depended upon the nature of the stone by which they were surrounded, or by its absence and the frequency of flint or timber. It had been intended to follow this up by a chapter or section on Local Types, mapping out England into more or less definite divisions' but it was found, after some progress had been made, that the subject was too big for inclusion in a book of limited size, that it had as yet been scarcely sufficiently studied, and that it was better on the whole to give more attention to planning and to the successive periods of architecture.
