Download or read book The Program of the Christian Religion written by John Walter Shackford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Program of the Christian Religion The church never faced greater opportunities for service than those by which she is confronted to-day. The world struggle which has been going on for more than three years has shaken men loose from the conventional bonds by which in normal times they are held in restraint and launched them on a sea of adventurous radicalism such as has almost no parallel in human history. Everything now is in a state of flux. Nothing is regarded as fixed beyond question. Out of this chaos a new world will have to be made after the grim conflict is over. What kind of a world it is to be will depend largely upon the Christian forces of the various countries involved in it. If these forces fail to show themselves equal to the occasion, there may follow a long period of confusion and uncertainty. If they prove themselves equal to the test which the opportunity will bring to them, they may succeed in reorganizing society upon a more broadly democratic and Christian basis and so inaugurate an era of brotherhood and cooperation in which the world will find rich compensation for all the agony of the grim and horrible struggle. Whether or not this is to be the outcome will depend in large measure upon the kind of leadership the church shall raise up. Book excerpt: The provocative and authoritative history of the origins of Christian America in the New Deal era We're often told that the United States is, was, and always has been a Christian nation. But in One Nation Under God, historian Kevin M. Kruse reveals that the belief that America is fundamentally and formally Christian originated in the 1930s. To fight the "slavery" of FDR's New Deal, businessmen enlisted religious activists in a campaign for "freedom under God" that culminated in the election of their ally Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. The new president revolutionized the role of religion in American politics. He inaugurated new traditions like the National Prayer Breakfast, as Congress added the phrase "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance and made "In God We Trust" the country's first official motto. Church membership soon soared to an all-time high of 69 percent. Americans across the religious and political spectrum agreed that their country was "one nation under God." Provocative and authoritative, One Nation Under God reveals how an unholy alliance of money, religion, and politics created a false origin story that continues to define and divide American politics to this day.

Book Welcome to the Christian Faith

Download or read book Welcome to the Christian Faith written by Christopher L. Webber and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A foundational volume for seekers in formation programs and a “refresher” study volume for individuals and congregational study groups. We live in a world increasingly separated from the Christian tradition and the basic understanding of the faith that previous ages might have taken for granted. The voices of faith seem increasingly strident and off-putting to many. There is a need for a calmer, basic introduction to faith that recognizes the value of doubt and the questions raised in a secular society. A systematic introduction to Christianity for newcomers needs to begin with a discussion of faith itself and then move on to a discussion of such Christian basics as God, Trinity, Church, sin, atonement, prayer, and Christian living.

Book excerpt: What beliefs are core to the Christian faith? This book is here to help you understand the reason for your hope as a Christian so that you can see it with fresh sight and invite others into the conversation. A lot of Christians take their story—the narratives that give rise to their beliefs—for granted. They pray, go to church, perhaps even read their Bible. But they might be stuck if a stranger asked them to explain what they believe and why they believe it. Author, pastor, and theologian Mike Horton unpacks the essential and basic beliefs that all Christians share in a way that is easy to understand and applicable to our lives today. And in a way that will make you excited to be a Christian! Core Christianity covers topics like: Jesus as both fully God and fully man. The doctrine of the Trinity. The goodness of God despite a broken world. The ways God speaks. The meaning of salvation. What is the Christian calling? Includes discussion questions for individual or group use. This introduction to the basic doctrines of Christianity is perfect for those who are new to the faith, as well as those who have an interest in deepening their understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.
