Book Advantage and Disadvantage

Download or read book Advantage and Disadvantage written by R. Darrell Bock and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon a large body of factual information,a critical view of the cognitive skills and potentials of young people in the United States in the 1980s. The data is analyzed using the most current statistical techniques and discussed from a broad psychological, sociological and educational perspective. The respondents to the survey were obtained by direct visits to households, not through convenient institutional sources, therefore allowing for a representative national sample. As such, the study typifies a complete cross-section of America's youth both in and out of school. The young people included in the sample were administered the ASVAB, a test battery which consists of ten separately timed and scored tests which assess a wide range of knowledge and skills from English-language reading and vocabulary, through secondary school mathematics understanding and quantitative competance, to quite specific vocational knowledge in technical fields. Differences in the profiles across the ten tests provide some of the more interesting results of the analysis.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980, the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Military Services, in cooperation with the Department of Labor, sponsored a large-scale research project to assess the vocational aptitudes of American youth. A national probability sample of approximately 12,000 young men and women, selected from participants in the National Longitudinal Survey (NLS) of Youth Labor Force Behavior, were administered the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The young people tested were representative of all youth in the United States, ages 16 through 23 years old. The analyses conducted in the profile study focused upon young people who were 18 through 23 at the time of ASVAB testing. The ASVAB is used by the Military Services to determine eligibility for enlistment and qualification for assignment to specific military jobs.

Book excerpt: American Youth is a controlled, essential, and powerful tale of a teenager in southern New England who is confronted by a terrible moral dilemma following a fatal firearms accident in his home. This tragedy earns him the unwelcome admiration of a sinister group of boys at his school and a girl associated with them. Set in a town riven by social and ideological tensions – an old rural culture in conflict with newcomers – this is a classic portrait of a young man struggling with the idea of identity and responsibility in an America ill at ease with itself.

Book Attitudes Aptitudes and Aspirations of American Youth

Download or read book Attitudes Aptitudes and Aspirations of American Youth written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruiting an all-volunteer military is a formidable task. To successfully enlist one eligible recruit, the Army must contact approximately 120 young people. The National Research Council explores the various factors that will determine whether the military can realistically expect to recruit an adequate fighting force-one that will meet its upcoming needs. It also assesses the military's expected manpower needs and projects the numbers of youth who are likely to be available over the next 20 years to meet these needs. With clearly written text and useful graphics, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth offers an overview of important issues for military recruiters, touching on a number of important topics including: sex and race, education and aptitude, physical and moral attributes, and military life and working conditions. In addition, the book looks at how a potential recruit would approach the decision to enlist, considering personal, family, and social values, and the options for other employment or college. Building on the need to increase young Americans' "propensity to enlist," this book offers useful recommendations for increasing educational opportunities while in the service and for developing advertising strategies that include concepts of patriotism and duty to country. Of primary value to military policymakers, recruitment officers, and analysts, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth will also interest social scientists and policy makers interested in youth trends.
