Book The Wise Legacy

Download or read book The Wise Legacy written by Daniel J. Siegel and published by Daniel J. Siegel. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wise Legacy explores the profound impact of Sidney Wise, the late Charles A. Dana Professor of Government at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Sid encouraged many of his students, including prominent politicians, educators, religious leaders, lobbyists and business executives, to pursue public service careers, and was responsible for creating an elite Washington network before online networking existed. Wise's mentees include Ronald Reagan's Chief of Staff Kenneth Duberstein, SEC Chair Mary Schapiro, Federal Judge D. Brooks Smith, HBO CEO Richard Plepler, and United Negro College Fund CEO and former Congressman William Gray, among many others. This book features 41 interviews that reveal Wise's passion for educating and guiding students, his astute use of networking to create a group of alumni dedicated to public service (many of whom serve today, years since Sid's passing), as well as his never-abused hidden power in our country. Throughout the book emerges Wise's passion for educating and guiding students, Wise's astute use of networking to create a group of alumni dedicated to public service (many of whom serve today, years since Sid's passing), as well as his never-abused hidden power in our country. At its core, this book highlights the power of mentoring and networking. Sid Wise's Rolodex, as it was often called, was a social networking vehicle long before the Internet. This book affirms the power of networking, and how working with others can define careers, and cause meaningful change.

Book Conversations with RBG

Download or read book Conversations with RBG written by Jeffrey Rosen and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her own words, Ruth Bader Ginsburg offers an intimate look at her life and career, through an extraordinary series of conversations with the head of the National Constitution Center. This remarkable book presents a unique portrait of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, drawing on more than twenty years of conversations with Jeffrey Rosen, starting in the 1990s and continuing through the Trump era. Rosen, a veteran legal journalist, scholar, and president of the National Constitution Center, shares with us the justice’s observations on a variety of topics, and her intellect, compassion, sense of humor, and humanity shine through. The affection they have for each other as friends is apparent in their banter and in their shared love for the Constitution—and for opera. In Conversations with RBG, Justice Ginsburg discusses the future of Roe v. Wade, her favorite dissents, the cases she would most like to see overruled, the #MeToo movement, how to be a good listener, how to lead a productive and compassionate life, and of course the future of the Supreme Court itself. These frank exchanges illuminate the steely determination, self-mastery, and wit that have inspired Americans of all ages to embrace the woman known to all as “Notorious RBG.” Whatever the topic, Justice Ginsburg always has something interesting—and often surprising—to say. And while few of us will ever have the opportunity to chat with her face-to-face, Jeffrey Rosen brings us by her side as never before. Conversations with RBG is a deeply felt portrait of an American hero.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles leading legal, political, and moral philosophers to examine the legacy of the work of Ronald Dworkin. They provide the most comprehensive critical treatment of Dworkin's accomplishments focusing on his work in all branches of philosophy, including his theory of value, political philosophy, philosophy of international law, and legal philosophy. The book's organizing principle and theme reflect Dworkin's self-conception as a builder of a unified theory of value, and the broad outlines of his system can be found throughout the book. The first section addresses the most abstract and general aspect of Dworkin's work--the unity of value thesis. The second section explores Dworkin's contributions to political philosophy, and discusses a number of political concepts including authority, civil disobedience, the legitimacy of states and the international legal system, distributive justice, collective responsibility, and Dworkin's master value of dignity and the associated values of equal concern and respect. The third section addresses various aspects of Dworkin's general theory of law. The fourth and final section comprises accounts of the structure and defining values of discrete areas of law.

Download or read book Making Space for the Dead written by Erin-Marie Legacey and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dead of Paris, before the French Revolution, were most often consigned to mass graveyards that contemporaries described as terrible and terrifying, emitting "putrid miasmas" that were a threat to both health and dignity. In a book that is at once wonderfully macabre and exceptionally informative, Erin-Marie Legacey explores how a new burial culture emerged in Paris as a result of both revolutionary fervor and public health concerns, resulting in the construction of park-like cemeteries on the outskirts of the city and a vast underground ossuary. Making Space for the Dead describes how revolutionaries placed the dead at the center of their republican project of radical reinvention of French society and envisioned a future where graveyards would do more than safely contain human remains; they would serve to educate and inspire the living. Legacey unearths the unexpectedly lively process by which burial sites were reimagined, built, and used, focusing on three of the most important of these new spaces: the Paris Catacombs, Père Lachaise cemetery, and the short-lived Museum of French Monuments. By situating discussions of death and memory in the nation's broader cultural and political context, as well as highlighting how ordinary Parisians understood and experienced these sites, she shows how the treatment of the dead became central to the reconstruction of Parisian society after the Revolution.
