Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991. "A photojournalist is a mixture of a cool, detached professional and a sensitive, involved citizen. The taking of pictures is much more than F-stops and shutter speeds. The printing of pictures is much more than chemical temperatures and contrast grades. The publishing of pictures is much more than cropping and size decisions. A photojournalist must always be aware that the technical aspects of the photographic process are not the primary concerns." This book addresses ethics in photojournalism in depth, with sections on the philosophy in the discipline, on pictures of victims or disaster scenes, on privacy rights and on altering images. As important and interesting today as when it was first in print.

Book The Ethics of Photojournalism in the Digital Age

Download or read book The Ethics of Photojournalism in the Digital Age written by Miguel Franquet Santos Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delving into the complexities of contemporary reportage, this book draws from moral philosophy and histories of photojournalism to understand the emergence of this distinct practice and discuss its evolution in a digital era. In arguing that the digitization of photography obliges us to radically challenge some of the traditional conceptions of press photography, this book addresses the historic opposition between artistic and journalistic photographs, showing and challenging how this has subtly inspired support for a forensic approach to photojournalism ethics. The book situates this debate within questions of relativism over what is ‘moral’, and normative debates over what is ‘journalistic’, alongside technical debates as to what is ‘possible’, to underpin a discussion of photojournalism as an ethical, moral, and societally important journalistic practice. Including detailed comparative analyses of codes of ethics, examination of controversial cases, and a study of photojournalism ethics as applied in different newsrooms, the book examines how ethical principles are applied by the global news media and explores the potential for constructive dialogue between different voices interested in pursuing the best version of photojournalism. A targeted, comprehensive and engaging book, this is a valuable resource for academics, researchers and students of photojournalism, as well as philosophy, communications and media studies more broadly.

Book The Media Industry is changing The coexistence of Professional photojournalism and citizen journalism and its problems

Download or read book The Media Industry is changing The coexistence of Professional photojournalism and citizen journalism and its problems written by Martin Förster and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Art - Photography and Film, grade: 1,3, ( Middlesex University in London ) (Art & Design), language: English, abstract: Journalism and the whole media industry as we know them today are changing dramatically. Through the rapid development of smart phones and the improvement of cameras we are noticing a dramatic change in the way journalism is used and how photojournalism is affected. The usage of “citizen journalism” has increased hundredfold and it is still rising. In this dissertation I want to take a closer look on this new phenomenon to discover if it is becoming a problem for professional photojournalists and if it affects the way how images are published. Every professional news agency today has many further sources – such as twitter, Flickr or Facebook - to choose from, which is advantageous on the one hand, but isn’t it a step in a direction that could let professional photojournalism “die”? But what are the reasons for that? Is it the next logical step in the development of photojournalism or is it “killing” the classical photojournalism, as we know it? In this dissertation I want to find out how professionals and citizen journalists coexist and what are the possible problems that this relationship could cause. To understand what citizen journalism is in detail, I want to take a closer look at the three variations that this kind of journalism has for me. To find a precise definition is not easy, as this kind of journalism is relatively new and even sources like Wikipedia don`t find a clear answer. 1. Accidential Journalists In the broader sense, all eyewitnesses with a smartphone are accidential journalists, as they witness a situation because they pass by. 2. Amateur Journalists A good example for amateur journalists are bloggers who might do a lot of research and try to expose hidden issues. 3. Citizen Journalists Citizens with a clear vision and political or humanistic interests are best suitable for the term “citizen journalist”.

Download or read book To See and Be Seen written by T.J. Thomson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether inscribed in physical media, projected on surfaces, or viewed on digital devices, we find ourselves constantly inundated with streams of visual data. Yet, we know surprisingly little about how these images are made, especially in journalistic contexts where representations are long-lasting and where repercussions can be dramatic. To See and Be Seen considers some of the ideological, aesthetic, pragmatic, institutional, cultural, commercial, environmental, and psychological forces that consciously or otherwise shape the production of news images and subsequently influence their reception. T. J. Thomson examines the expectations, experiences, and reactions of those depicted by visual journalists and considers other relevant factors: how do everyday people perceive cameras and those who operate them? How are identities visually represented and presented to different audiences? And how does the physical and the socially constructed environment shape those depictions? The results of Thomson’s research provide one of the first empirical and real-time glimpses into the experience of being in front of a journalist’s lens. To See and Be Seen enables us to understand the stories behind images by considering the environment in which such images are made, the exchange (if one occurred) between the camera-wielding observer and the observed, the identities of both parties, and how they react to the representations that are created. To See and Be Seen is the winner of the National Communication Association’s 2020 Diane S. Hope Book of the Year Award. NCA reviewers called the book “a signature achievement in understanding the process of media production and the ethics of photojournalism.”

Download or read book Careers in Photojournalism written by Institute for Career Research and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOR PHOTOJOURNALISTS, A PICTURE really is worth a thousand words and if the image is good enough it can be worth a nice payday as well. In this very visual world, photojournalism is the new frontier in news gathering and reporting. Photojournalism tells a story in photos or video that makes people feel as though they are right in the middle of the action. The public's demand for visuals from the scene of a major news story is greater now than it has ever been before in the history of journalism. Breaking news with visuals rules the day. This is not a business for a shrinking violet. A news reporter writing a story may be able to stay a relatively safe distance from the fray. Photojournalists, on the other hand, rarely have that luxury, and when debris or bullets fly through the air, those recording the visuals of the events taking place are often in harm's way. It is an exciting but, at times, a dangerous way to make a living. Photojournalists need all the talents associated with great news reporting, plus the creative flair of an artist, an eye for the visual that says it all. These journalists with cameras have to understand what news is and find that special visual that expresses the emotion of the story that goes way beyond words. Photojournalists are always looking for the "wow" factor, a visual jaw dropper. Like a reporter who makes a living with words, photojournalists must always be on the hunt for the exclusive - the photo and story nobody else can get. So no story can be too small or too big. As a photojournalist, you have to be able to handle all the stories that come your way and present them in a manner that sets your work apart from that of others in the field. You need a different angle, a different take, an individual style. Elite photojournalists preserve the moment the way others only wish they could. This takes years of practice, developing your technique, sharpening your skills, studying the work of great photojournalists and taking photo after photo after photo, or hours of video and editing it down to exactly what you want. Great photojournalists do get lucky at times, but more often than not experience guides them to the right place at the right time. They see within an emerging story that moment developing for a moving, telling, even rare visual, and position themselves to get it. This is a business that affords few second chances. The images you capture may become iconic and may be seen by generations to come. One day you may be taking pictures of the rich and famous, drinking champagne at a charity opening. The next day your subject might be a homeless child on the street. Everything you do has to ring with originality. Your work has to be fresh, exciting, and push the envelope, challenging the next generation of photojournalists to try to eclipse it.

Book The International Photojournalism Industry

Download or read book The International Photojournalism Industry written by Jonathan Ilan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are events turned into news pictures that define them for the audience? How do events become commodified into pictures that both capture them and reiterate the values of the agencies that sell them? This book looks at every stage of the production of news photographs as they move to and from the ground and are sold around the world. Based on extensive fieldwork at a leading international news agency that includes participant observation with photographers in the field, at the agency’s local and global picture desks in Israel, Singapore, and the UK, in-depth interviews with pictures professionals, and observations and in-depth interviews at The Guardian’s picture desk in London, the findings in this book point to a wide cultural production infrastructure hidden from – and yet also nurtured and thus very much determined by – the consumer’s eye.
