Download or read book Trooper Tales a Series of Sketches of the Real American Private Soldier Classic Reprint written by Will Levington Comfort and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trooper Tales a Series of Sketches of the Real American Private Soldier Civilians write army stories. Commissioned officers write army stories. Enlisted men laugh at the former because the author is remote and they cannot bruise him. Had they the power to lure the civilian into their midst they would shortly drill him full of real army coloring, and his effusions would be shrunken with lean, beautiful wisdom ever after. But, since he keeps his personality removed, the soldiers can only laugh. The literary efforts of commissioned officers are discussed in whispers by the enlisted men, because they are only enlisted men, while the commissioned officers are old and young gods, who become very masterful beings when criticised audibly by men from the ranks. But no one can deny that the army stories of commissioned officers are full of officers' instinct, and officers' fleckless uniforms, and clubs, and ladies. The enlisted men who emerge upon these idyllic pages are sort of baneful and temporary necessities, as are warts. There are orderlies with square shoulders and brick faces, whose vocabularies consist of "Yes, sir," and "No, sir," uttered in disfigured English. Book A Private in the Guards Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Private in the Guards Classic Reprint written by Stephen Graham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Private in the Guards The fortune of war gave me eighteen months in the ranks in the Guards. I have thought I could perform no better service than describe the social life and the spirit in these historic regiments of the British Army. I should explain for those who do not know it, that the Bill Browns are the Grenadiers, the Jocks are Scots Guards, the Taffies are the Welsh Guards, the Micks are the Irish, and the Coalies are the Coldstream. Amongst the rank and file they are only referred to by their nicknames. So also in this book. An intense rivalry reigns amongst these regiments, and comparisons are nowhere more odious. The presence of the young Prince of Wales in the Grenadiers no doubt gave that regiment great prestige, but the Scots Guards yield to none. The record of each and all for the four years of conflict is most remarkable. However, it has not been the war which has been most interesting for me, but the men. We had amongst us a number of those American volunteers, the advance party of America's great manhood, who were feted in London in 1917, and I have used the point of view of these Americans and their adventures together with my own as a touch-stone for our Army institutions and customs. Download or read book The History of Alexander written by Quintus Curtius Rufus and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-04-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander the Great (356-323 BC), who led the Macedonian army to victory in Egypt, Syria, Persia and India, was perhaps the most successful conqueror the world has ever seen. Yet although no other individual has attracted so much speculation across the centuries, Alexander himself remains an enigma. Curtius' History offers a great deal of information unobtainable from other sources of the time. A compelling narrative of a turbulent era, the work recounts events on a heroic scale, detailing court intrigue, stirring speeches and brutal battles - among them, those of Macedonia's great war with Persia, which was to culminate in Alexander's final triumph over King Darius and the defeat of an ancient and mighty empire. It also provides by far the most plausible and haunting portrait of Alexander we possess: a brilliantly realized image of a man ruined by constant good fortune in his youth.

And they have even asked me if I really existed at all except in the imagination and the newspapers.
