Book The Private Parts of Women

Download or read book The Private Parts of Women written by Lesley Glaister and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the award-winning author of Honour Thy Father: Who’s a threat to whom in this “spine-chilling” novel of split personality? (The Times, London). Inis has no interest in finding out who she is. She wants to discover who she isn’t. One day, in her least favorite month of February, Inis bleaches her hair, abandons the husband and children she loves, and closes the door forever on family, marriage, and her comfortable suburban London home. There, she was safe, appreciated, and loved—and she hated every minute of it. Now she’s ended up in a dreary little flat in the grey, post-industrial town of Sheffield. Here, in the neighborhood of Mercy Terrace, Inis is being watched. There is the boy who steals things, and plays until he gets hurt. There is Inis’s neighbor Trixie, an eighty-year-old hymnist for the Salvation Army who grows hyacinths, and enjoys afternoon tea. And Ada, who lives to be desired. As Inis watches them, she fears they share more than this shabby dead-end street. As four people’s lives begin to converge, Inis gets increasingly nervous—because she’s not certain which of them, herself included, could be dangerous to the others. Or which one will survive. Lesley Glaister’s novel of multiple-personality disorder was inspired by Flora Rheta Schreiber’s Sybil. As Glaister tells it in the Independent: “I was 10 when I read [it] . . . I was fascinated by the idea of 16 different personalities being packed into one body with one face. I remember longing to suffer from the same problem.” “A stream of consciousness thriller, well worth reading twice” —The Literary Review

Book Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health

Download or read book Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-07-02 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's obvious why only men develop prostate cancer and why only women get ovarian cancer. But it is not obvious why women are more likely to recover language ability after a stroke than men or why women are more apt to develop autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Sex differences in health throughout the lifespan have been documented. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health begins to snap the pieces of the puzzle into place so that this knowledge can be used to improve health for both sexes. From behavior and cognition to metabolism and response to chemicals and infectious organisms, this book explores the health impact of sex (being male or female, according to reproductive organs and chromosomes) and gender (one's sense of self as male or female in society). Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health discusses basic biochemical differences in the cells of males and females and health variability between the sexes from conception throughout life. The book identifies key research needs and opportunities and addresses barriers to research. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health will be important to health policy makers, basic, applied, and clinical researchers, educators, providers, and journalists-while being very accessible to interested lay readers.

Book African Womanhood and Incontinent Bodies

Download or read book African Womanhood and Incontinent Bodies written by Kathomi Gatwiri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the structures of poverty, power, patriarchy and imperialistic health policies that underpin what the World Health Organization calls the “hidden disease” of vaginal fistulas in Africa. By employing critical feminist and post-colonial perspectives, it shows how “leaking black female bodies” are constructed, ranked, stratified and marginalised in global maternal health care, and explains why women in Africa are at risk of developing vaginal fistulas and then having adequate treatment delayed or denied. Drawing on face-to-face, in-depth interviews with 30 Kenyan women, it paints a rare social portrait of the heartbreaking challenges for Kenyan women living with this most profound gender-related health issue – an experience of shame, taboo and abjection with severe implications for women’s wellbeing, health and sexuality. In absolutely groundbreaking depth, this book shows why research on vaginal fistulas must incorporate feminist understandings of bodily experience to inform future practices and knowledge.

Book It Hurts Down There

Download or read book It Hurts Down There written by Christine Labuski and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracks the medical emergence and treatment of vulvar pain conditions in order to understand why so many US women are misinformed about their sexual bodies. How does a woman describe a part of her body that much of society teaches her to never discuss? It Hurts Down There analyzes the largest known set of qualitative research data about vulvar pain conditions. It tells the story of one hundred women who struggled with this dilemma as they sought treatment for chronic and unexplained vulvar pain. Christine Labuski argues that the medical condition of vulvar pain cannot be adequately understood without exposing and interrogating cultural attitudes about female genitalia. The author’s dual positioning as cultural anthropologist and former nurse practitioner strengthens her argument that discourses about “healthy” vulvas naturalize and reproduce heteronormative associations between genitalia, sex, and gender. “This is an empirically engaged, ethnographically rich interpretation of genital pain in a cross section of women—but it is also so much more. Christine Labuski has a deep understanding of both the anatomical biomedical construction of female genitalia and manifestations of physical pain and suffering, which she combines with a marvelous cultural analysis of how entangled these biological ‘facts’ are with the contemporary culture of female loathing and self-loathing.” — Lisa Jean Moore, coauthor of The Body: Social and Cultural Dissections

Book The Female Body in Medicine and Literature

Download or read book The Female Body in Medicine and Literature written by Andrew Mangham and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a range of texts from the seventeenth century to the present, The Female Body in Medicine and Literature explores accounts of motherhood, fertility, and clinical procedures for what they have to tell us about the development of women's medicine. The essays here offer nuanced historical analyses of subjects that have received little critical attention, including the relationship between gynecology and psychology and the influence of popular art forms on so-called women's science prior to the twenty-first century. Taken together, these essays offer a wealth of insight into the medical treatment of women and will appeal to scholars in gender studies, literature, and the history of medicine.

Book Beyond Intelligence

Download or read book Beyond Intelligence written by Dona Matthews and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From two internationally recognized experts in the field of gifted education comes this timely exploration of how best to nurture a child’s unique gifts, and set them on a path to a happily productive life — in school and beyond. What is intelligence? Is it really a have or have not proposition, as we’ve been led to believe? Are some children just destined to fall behind? Dona Matthews and Joanne Foster answer those questions with a resounding “No!” In Beyond Intelligence, they demonstrate that every child has the ability to succeed — with the right support and guidance. But how can parents provide that support? Matthews and Foster proceed from the assumption that knowledge is power, offering parents an information-packed guide to identifying a child’s ability, fostering creativity, and bolstering effort and persistence. Using case studies and anecdotes from their personal and professional experience, they explore different ways of learning; the links between creativity and intelligence; and how to best to provide emotional and social supports. They offer critical advice on how to work co-operatively with schools and educators, and address how to embrace failures as learning opportunities. Drawing on the latest research in brain development and education theory, Beyond Intelligence is a must-read for today’s parents and educators.
