Book The Political and Economic Development of Modern Turkey

Download or read book The Political and Economic Development of Modern Turkey written by William Hale and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the evolution of policy and the course of Turkey’s economic development since the foundation of Turkey’s republic in 1923. Turkey is a fast-developing country with, over the last seventy years, a radically transformed economic and social structure. The concept of planned development was first applied as long as fifty years ago, long before other such approaches in the region. Furthermore, Turkey’s post-war economic development has proceeded in a rare environment of a predominantly liberal, competitive political system. This book is the first comprehensive and up-to-date study of Turkish economic development and its relationship to political change. First published in 1981.

Book Radical Politics in Modern Turkey

Download or read book Radical Politics in Modern Turkey written by Jacob M. Landau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that the active and organized involvement of radical movements in Turkish politics is a recent development renders its investigation difficult. To be meaningful, the terms ‘Left’, ‘Right’ and ‘Islamist’ have to relate to specific situations, and against a background of freedom of action. In Turkey, therefore, the main field of study should be the years following the 1960 Revolution – the period which is the main concern of this book, first published in 1974.

Landau appears to have consulted every conceivable source, including archives and collections... In addition, the book is useful to students of pan-nationalism and nationalism, for Landau also expertly places all his information into a larger theoretical context. This contribution to the literature is invaluable. -- Journal of Developing Areas... a most worthwhile work, ... It... deserves to be in all library collections on the Middle East. -- Perspectives on Political ScienceLandau has provided an up-to-date compendium of facts concerning the history of these nationalist ideas and movements. Students of nationalism in general and the politics of post-Soviet Central Asia and the Turkish Republic in particular will remain greatly indebted to [Landau] for some considerable time. -- American Political Science ReviewAn examination of relations between Turks in Turkey and their kin abroad -- in Cyprus, the Balkans, and especially in the six ex-Soviet Muslim republics in the Caucasus and Central Asia. Book Turkish Politics and the Military

Download or read book Turkish Politics and the Military written by William Hale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey's geographical position, between the Middle East and Europe and at the centre of the current upheavals in the USSR and the Balkans, has led to a reawakening of interest in its international standing. Meanwhile its domestic politics are of increasing interest and Turkey seems to have become a model for Liberal Democracy in Central Asia. David Hale focuses on the role of the military in contemporary politics. He author argues that the military has behaved quite differently from its counterparts in other third world states: it has acted in some degree as a guardian of the state, committed to economic and social modernisation. The book places contemporary politics in perspective by looking at the evolution of the armed forces in Turkey from the end of the eighteenth century. The author traces the role of the military through the establishment of the Republic, the military coups of 1960 and 1980, the gradual return to civilian government of the sixties and seventies, and the military disengagement from politics of 1983 onwards. Hale is interested in the army as an actor in the political drama rather than in the professional functions of soldiers, and his historical exposition reveals much about the modern scene.
