Book First Principles of Soil Fertility Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Principles of Soil Fertility Classic Reprint written by Alfred Vivian and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Soil Fertility This little book is intended primarily for home read ing. It is written, however, largely from lecture notes used by the author in a course in soil fertility given to winter course students, and, therefore, will be found to be a suitable text for short courses. It is an at tempt to present in non-technical language a subject of great scientific and practical interest to the farmer. The subject of Soil Fertility is so large, that each phase of it could of necessity be only briefly considered in a small book, and the writer did not pretend to make the discussion of any topic exhaustive. For this reason some things have been omitted which might have been discussed with profit in a larger work. Only the more important facts concerning the maintenance of fertility have been presented, but it is believed that the statements so far as they go are in accord with the best scientific thought and practice of the day. Download or read book Soil Fertility and Permanent Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Cyril George Hopkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Fertility and Permanent Agriculture Liebig said, Agriculture is, of all industrial pursuits, the rich est ih facts and the poorest in their comprehension. To a large degree this statement is still true, and the chief purpose of this volume is to bring together in convenient form the world's most essential facts gathered from the field and laboratory, and to develop from them some foundation principles of permanent agriculture; for, as Liebig also truly said, Facts are like grains of sand which are moved by the wind, but principles are these same grains cemented into rocks. While one dare not believe that error has been completely av'oided, the facts presented have been checked with all reasonable care, and they may be accepted with the confidence that they are accurately reproduced from the original data. Book The Principles of Soil Management Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Soil Management Classic Reprint written by T. Lyttleton Lyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Soil Management In 1895 the preface was written for the Rural Science Series. It set forth the purpose of the Series to be the desire to place in readable form the best results of scientific thought and discovery relating to agriculture and country life, in order that the general public might be made aware of the progress, and that farmers might be led more effectively to apply the information in their daily work. It was the hope that the Series, under the present writer's direction or another's, might gradually extend itself to the whole range of agricultural scientific literature. The books now included in The Rural Science Series are about two dozen, making nearly two volumes, on the average, for each year. The number of writers on agricultural topics is increasing, the knowledge on all subjects is rapidly accumulating, and the reading-public is gradually enlarging; there is every reason to expect, therefore, that the Series will extend itself still more rapidly in the years to come. Book excerpt: This handbook has been prepared to support fieldworkers and farmers in developing vegetative systems of soil and mositure conservation that will meet the requirements of small farmers in developing countries, most of whom reside in the tropics and semitropics. Experience has shown that conventional systems of earth bunds or terraces on small farms are expensive and in many cases, especially in modern times, ineffective. When applied correctly, vegetative systems of soil and mositure conservation - particulary the system of hedges of vetiver grass described in this handbook - have proved cheaper and more effective.

Book Fertility Food and Fever

Download or read book Fertility Food and Fever written by David E.F. Henley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining historical geography with historical demography, and conceived as a study in environmental history, this book examines the long-term relationship between population, economy and environment in the northern half of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Using a rich variety of Dutch historical sources, including VOC and missionary archives, it attempts to reconstruct and analyse patterns of demographic, economic and landscape change throughout this large and ecologically diverse region over a period of almost three and a half centuries. Particular attention is given to the articulation between demographic and economic growth, to levels and determinants of reproductive fertility, to changing disease environments, and to the question of agricultural sustainability and its preconditions. The results call into question some common views regarding the reasons for low population growth, and the relationship between population density and landscape change, in the Southeast Asian past.

Book Borderlands

Download or read book Borderlands written by Gloria Anzaldúa and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Poetry. Latinx Studies. LGBTQIA Studies. Edited by Ricardo F. Vivancos-Pèrez and Norma Cantú. Rooted in Gloria Anzaldúa's experiences growing up near the U.S./Mexico border, BORDERLANDS/LA FRONTERA remaps our understanding of borders as psychic, social, and cultural terrains that we inhabit and that inhabit us all. Drawing heavily on archival research and a comprehensive literature review while contextualizing the book within her theories and writings before and after its 1987 publication, this critical edition elucidates Anzaldúa's complex composition process and its centrality in the development of her philosophy. It opens with two introductory studies; offers a corrected text, explanatory footnotes, translations, and four archival appendices; and closes with an updated bibliography of Anzaldúa's works, an extensive scholarly bibliography on Borderlands, a brief biography, and a short discussion of the Gloria E. Anzaldúa Papers. "Ricardo F. Vivancos-Pèrez's meticulous archival work and Norma Elia Cantú's life experience and expertise converge to offer a stunning resource for Anzaldúa scholars; for writers, artists, and activists inspired by her work; and for everyone. Hereafter, no study of Borderlands will be complete without this beautiful, essential reference."--Paola Bacchetta

Book The Earth s Land Surface

Download or read book The Earth s Land Surface written by Kenneth J Gregory and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010-03-23 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Given the sheer scale of the topic under consideration here, Professor Gregory does well to condense it into bite-size pieces for the reader. I recommend this text to all undergraduate students of physical geography and earth sciences, particularly to those in their first and second years... This book is a comprehensive and (crucially) inexpensive text that will provide students with a useful source on geomorphology." - Lynda York, The Geographical Journal "I would highly recommend this to anyone doing geology or geography at university as a ′go to′ book for geomorphology and landform." - Sara Falcone, Teaching Earth Science "An excellent source of information for anyone who needs a well-informed, easy to use reference volume to introduce them to the fascinating complexities of the earth’s land surface, past, present and future." - Angela Gurnell, Queen Mary, University of London This introductory text details the land surface of the earth in a readable style covering the major issues, key themes and sensitivities of the environments/landscape. Emphasising the major ideas and their development, each chapter includes case studies and details of influential scientists (not necessarily geomorphologists) who have contributed to the progress of understanding. Providing a very clear explanation of the understanding achieved and of the debates that have arisen, the book is comprised of 12 chapters in four sections: Visualising the land surface explains and explores the composition of the land surface and outlines how it has been studied. Dynamics of the land surface considers the dynamics affecting the earth′s land surface including its influences, processes and the changes that have occurred. Environments of the land surface looks to understand the land surface in major world regions highlighting differences between the areas. Management of the land surface is an examination of the current and future prospects of the management of the earth′s land surface. With pedagogical features including further reading, questions for discussion and a glossary, this original, lively text is authored by one of the leading experts in the field and will be core reading for first and second year undergraduates on all physical geography courses.
