Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 14: December 1919 So the product always reveals the source, if but we are able to read the marks upon it. The Pentateuch can be no exception, but most certainly bears the marks of its origin. The real internal evidence always does identify a document, if we are able to read the evidence aright. Wherever the Pentateuch came from, its provenance, whether naturalistic or revela tory, or both, or a development from within with an objective revelation added from with out, will certainly be stamped on its face. Made in the wilderness, made in Pales tine, made in Babylonia, or made in heaven will be marked upon it. The light that enables us to read aright these marks is the light from archaeology on Pentateuchal times. The purpose of these lectures is, by this light, to read these marks. I stand here unofficially as the spokesman for the Seminary, the church, and especially for the ministry whose service you now join in the interests of the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. The interest in an occasion like this may not be adequately expressed by any exer cises in which we engage. The urgent call in these days for the devotion of men to interests other than material is so wide-spread and em phatic that the graduation exercises of our theological seminaries take on a new and ln creased interest. Thirty - eight years ago at the Western Theological Seminary I was in your position and now after a generation of service I come to you with some Observations growing out of this experience in the hope that you may put a new appraisal upon the impor tance of the service of the minister to his gen cration. Accordingly, I have selected for the topic Of this address, The Ministry for the Modern Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1993, Vol. 14 Thank you, Mr. President, for your introduction and your welcoming words. I would like to add my own warm welcome to everyone who is here today from our Seminary community, and also to colleagues and dear friends from Princeton University, the Center of Theological Inquiry, and the Institute for Advanced Studies. It was exactly two years ago this month that Dr. Gillespie called me on a warm, humid February evening in Port Elizabeth, South Africa with the news that the Board of Trustees had appointed me to be the first occupant of the recently established James I. Mccord Chair in Theology and Science at this seminary. That single telephone call irrevocably changed our lives, and also the lives of our children and family. Today Hester, Nina, and I can look back on our first year in the United States and in Princeton. In spite of an often difficult and even painful transition, we have been overwhelmed by the warm way in which we were welcomed to this community. We are deeply appreciative of this, and also for your faith in, and your remarkable vision of the way that theology and the sciences today move on the cutting edge of the Christian dialogue with our contemporary culture. I am not at all competent to advise you con cerning much of the work which falls to your lot in this highly technical and difficult branch of Theological instruction. Strange to say, this is the second time that I have been appointed to charge a Professor in the Old Testament Department - the accomplished Old Testament Scholar wit-h whom you have been most closely associated, and now yourself. I can only ac count for this double choice on the ground of close friendship. While I make no pretension whatever to knowledge entitling me to speak to you as a mentor, I do have certain convictions in this matter which I desire to voice, and which I beg you to consider.
