Download or read book Rheumatic Fever written by Angelo Taranta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become commonplace to say that the decline of rheu matic fever in Europe and North America has little, if any thing, to do with medicine; but to conclude that efforts to control the disease are futile would be an error leading to what could be termed public health malpractice. The need for adequate treatment of patients suffering from acute rheu matic fever or chronic rheumatic valvular heart disease is obvious; but control also means prevention, and here, too, the need is obvious, if only to lighten the burden on health care, due especially to the treatment of patients with advanced forms of the disease. The feasibility of and justification for rheumatic fever control programmes in developing countries has been often questioned. A co-operative study co-ordinated by the World Health Organization has now demonstrated that systematic prevention of rheumatic fever recurrences not only benefits the patients concerned but also has economic advantages. Primary prevention by systematic penicillin treatment of all streptococcal throat infections is at present beyond the reach of many health care systems, and anti-streptococcal vac cination is still in the research phase. The mainstay of the combat against rheumatic heart disease thus remains 7 RHEUMATIC FEVER secondary prevention - the long-term monthly administ ration of penicillin injections to identified patients. This requires, among other things, that penicillin be available.

Book Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease

Download or read book Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2004-02-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rheumatic heart disease presents a major public health challenge (particularly for children) and major determinants are poverty, malnutrition, overcrowding, poor housing and a shortage of health-care resources. Although cost effective prevention and control strategies are available, they remain underused in most developing countries. This publication contains the report of a WHO expert consultation, held in Geneva in October 2001, which reviewed the current scientific knowledge of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, as well as the medical and public health related practices. It suggests practical recommendations for an evidence-based approach to the prevention and management of the disease and for cost-effective programmes for their control.

Book Comorbidity in Rheumatic Diseases

Download or read book Comorbidity in Rheumatic Diseases written by Yasser El Miedany and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores comorbidity in patients with rheumatic diseases and details both care and treatment options in standard clinical practice. Patients with rheumatic diseases are clinically complex, and the interplay of their disease activity with associated conditions may lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Recently there have been major advances in the management of rheumatic diseases, however, without addressing the potential comorbid conditions, including cardiovascular disease; pulmonary disease; and depression; outcomes remain poor. With its 19 chapters, covering the management of major rheumatic diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus , and osteoarthritis), potential comorbidities and treatment recommendations, as well as possible interactions between conditions; this book addresses the gap between textbook medicine and day to day patients' care. Authors also discuss the new hot issue of the comorbidity index, comparing the standard tools to the recently developed indices and how they can assist the rheumatologists in determining disease burden, prognosis, and comorbidity probability. This book is an ideal clinical guide and reference that enables rheumatologists, internal medicine physicians, and residents to address the full clinical expression of these rheumatic diseases with views towards prevention or early management of comorbid conditions.

Will today's economic systems sustain tomorrow's health? Will future generations inherit fair access to health and health care? An important hope for the health of future generations is the establishment of a well-grounded, global public health system. Global Public Health: Ecological Foundations addresses both the challenges and cooperative solutions of contemporary public health, within a framework of social justice, environmental sustainability, and global cooperation. With an emphasis on ecological foundations, this book approaches public health principles-history, foundations, topics, and applications-with a community-oriented perspective. By achieving global reach through cooperative, community-based interventions, this text illustrates that the practical application of public health principles can help maintain the health of the world's people. Blending established wisdom with new perspectives, Global Public Health will stimulate better understanding of how the different streams of public health can work more synergistically to promote global health equity. It is a foundation for future public health measures to be built and to succeed.

Book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 5

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 5 written by Dorairaj Prabhakaran and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.

Book The Management of Acute Respiratory Infections in Children

Download or read book The Management of Acute Respiratory Infections in Children written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 1995 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A step-by-step guide to the correct management of respiratory infections in infants and young children. Addressed to staff in first-level health facilities, the book explains how to assess a child, recognize symptoms, classify the illness, and provide appropriate treatment, whether involving immediate referral to hospital, treatment with antibiotics at home, or simple home care. Throughout, a special effort is made to help staff distinguish the few, very sick children from the many others whose infections can be safely treated at home. The manual also aims to help prevent deaths from pneumonia and other severe illnesses by offering abundant advice on the recognition and urgent management of danger signs. The manual has two parts, each based on the use of a quick-reference case management chart, reproduced in a foldout version. Part one covers the management of pneumonia, wheezing, coughs and colds. Advice on how to collect essential information about the signs of respiratory problems is followed by a description of the steps involved in classifying the illness, determining the degree of severity, and identifying the appropriate treatment. Part one concludes with detailed treatment instructions, including how to give an antibiotic and treat fever and wheezing. Part two explains how to assess, classify, and treat the child with an ear problem or sore throat. Treatment instructions include advice on how to dry the ear by wicking, give an antibiotic, and manage streptococcal sore throat. Further practical information is provided in a series of annexes, which explain how to refer a child to hospital, what to do when referral is not feasible, how to use a rapid-acting bronchodilator, and how to determine whether complaints and symptoms are due to measles, pertussis, or diphtheria.
