Download or read book A Priest in the Home written by James Michael Doyle and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-01-03 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for the instruction and encouragement of men to be the leaders in their homes in both spiritual and physical matters. If men will fulfill their responsibilities as spiritual leaders in their homes, the world and the church would see an immediate revival of Gods Spirit. This book will show them why they should and how to begin. Chapter 1 gives a brief history of the Old Testament priesthood and why God originally established it. Uniquely sets the stage for our New Testament priestly duties. Chapter 2 explains the rituals followed in ordaining and consecrating the priests under the Old Covenant, and relates these to our New Covenant consecration. Chapter 3 explains what the daily sacrifice was and why it had to be performed, and relates it to our daily sacrifice today of prayer, both morning and evening. Chapter 4 discusses Joshuas declaration of his entire households dedication in service to the Lord, and explains the importance of our making that same declaration today. Chapter 5 explains the five main offerings instituted by God - sin offering, trespass offering, burnt offering, grain offering and fellowship offering - and translates those into our New Testament spiritual sacrifices today. Chapter 6 describes how God is more pleased with our obedience than the sacrifices, which were set up to atone for our disobedience in the first place. Chapter 7 shows what kind of unselfish, unconditional love God expects husbands to have for their wives with a unique tie-in to Scripture. Chapter 8 encourages men to exercise godly dominion over every circumstance in their lives by living by faith. Chapter 9 describes the spiritual warfare Satan wages against every Christian and how men as priests in their homes can protect themselves and their families. Chapter 10 focuses on one particular evil spirit which is the greatest threat to the priesthood in the home and the church, and shows how to identify it and pull down its stronghold. Chapter 11 explains the spiritual significance, and the power released, by standing firm in your faith in the face of every obstacle to your spiritual walk. It leaves men with the encouragement to do everything they have learned in this book and then just stand on Gods promises that He will order the steps of a righteous man.

Book excerpt: The author has taken Old Testament stories as the subject of eighteen meditations to be used in a retreat for priests. And in most cases he has chosen an incident in the New Testament and placed it side by side with the other. "Between the two," he writes, "we ought by God's help to be able to see what warning it was, or what encouragement, that the Holy Ghost meant us to draw, when he inspired the sacred authors to write as they did." What emerges is a brilliantly original book of meditations, ideally suitable for priests but extraordinarily fruitful for the lay reader. His subjects range from the Creation to Our Lady, and each Old Testament incident is skillfully resolved into some spiritual situation of which the touchstone is grace.

Book A Spiritual Theology of the Priesthood

Download or read book A Spiritual Theology of the Priesthood written by Dermot Power (Fr.) and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Urs von Balthasar's writings have pastoral implications that even now are barely recognized and hardly developed. Here a pastorally experienced theologian, who knew von Balthasar personally, unfolds this pastoral dimension for the first time. Father Dermot Power demonstrates the paradoxical grandeur and weakness of the Catholic priesthood. He highlights the roles of the Catholic priest as servant, bridegroom, shepherd, victim, teacher, prophet, celebrant, and minister of reconciliation. He explores the relationship between the mission of Christ and the states of life within the Church, including the laity, and that between the universal call to holiness and the priestly vocation. He examines the structures of the Church in relation to the inwardness of love, and the new hope it offers for the renewal of the priesthood in the Catholic Church. Dermot Power is Chaplain of St. Mary's School, Ascot. He lectures widely and leads retreats and workshops for priests. "Power's book on priesthood is so eminently worth reading, because it deliberately attempts to draw upon the work of von Balthasar in trying to show us how the reality of the priesthood remains rooted in Jesus Christ."--Crisis "A timely, profound and enriching reflection on the priesthood which brings together theology, spirituality, and personal experience in an invigorating way."--Msgr. Keith Barltrop "This illuminating book deserves to become a classic and should be on the shelves of every priest."--Prof. John Saward " The book] makes an invaluable, deeply theological contribution to our understanding of priesthood today."--Bishop James O'Brien "Father Power gives us . . . a great gift: a practical, simple, and profound spiritual theology of the priesthood. The spirituality here helps us to live our priesthood as well as to understand it better."--Robert Faricy, S.J. "This close examination of von Balthasar's theology reveals what lies at the very heart of the priesthood and offers a spirituality to match it."--Lavinia Byrne, I.B.V.M. "For those who have kept up with recent Vatican documents on priestly life and ministry, the hand of von Balthasar will be readily recognizable. . . . This book belongs in every priest's library."--Homiletic and Pastoral Review CONTENTS Foreword by Robert Faricy, S.J. Preface Introduction I. Download or read book Sacerdotal Retreat written by Mateo Crawley-Boevey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I am come to cast fire on the earth; and what will I, but that it be kindled?" Our Savior sent His Apostles to the four corners of the earth to spread the fire of God's love throughout a pagan world of hatred and ignorance. The Holy Ghost was also given to the Church to keep this flame burning until the end of the world. But Our Lord warned, "And because iniquity hath abounded, the charity of many shall grow cold," and asked whether when He comes again, "He shall he find faith on earth?" To rekindle this fire in our neo-pagan world, the Sacred Heart appeared to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the seventeenth century at Paray-le-Monial. At the beginning of the twentieth century the Sacred Heart, again at Paray-le-Monial, gave an apostolic mission to Father Mateo Crawley-Boevey to spread the devotion of Home Enthronement to the Sacred Heart. Additionally he was an outstanding apostle of priestly sanctity throughout the world. What better way to rekindle the fire of charity in God's Church than by preaching retreats, especially to priests, drawing from his profound faith and ardent zeal? This book contains some conferences of a retreat preached by Father Mateo. In them he instructs priests that sanctity can be attained simply through the fulfillment of their duties of state, yet only when performed with a supernatural spirit of union with Christ crucified. He also underscores the sublime dignity of the priesthood as well as the tremendous value of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which is the priest's primary means for his own sanctification and apostolate. These teachings are a needed remedy to Protestant and Modernist attacks upon both the priesthood and the Mass, causing thereby an identity crisis for the modern priest. As Father John d'Elbee, SS.CC., former Superior General of the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts, remarked, "How many bishops and priests have told us, 'My interior life, in fact my whole life, was transformed as a result of an unforgettable retreat preached by Father Mateo. What a debt of gratitude I owe him!"

Book Christ the Ideal of the Priest

Download or read book Christ the Ideal of the Priest written by Columba Marmion and published by St. Francis of Assisi Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly acclaimed spiritual writer, Blessed Columba Marmion wrote this classic work on the priesthood to show the great holiness that priests are called to, and how that holiness can only be attained through close union with, and imitation of, Jesus Christ. While aimed at the clergy, this profound spiritual work will also be of immense inspiration for laity in coming to a deeper understanding of the true nature and calling of the priesthood. Echoing the thought and writing of St. Paul, Marmion stresses that the priestly life must be dominated by Christ and in constant dependence on His merits, His grace and His activity in the soul of the priest. In this perspective, the dignity of the priesthood and the work of the priest's sanctification are understood. In all his actions, in the sacred acts of worship, the administration of the sacraments, private prayer and devotions, and serving the various needs of his flock, Marmion says the priest must always see himself as the minister of the Savior, as Alter Christus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally accepted that since the end of Vatican II there has been a crisis in the Catholic priesthood. This is reflected in two areas in particular--defections from the priesthood and a serious decline in vocations, primarily in the developed countries of the West. John Paul II has addressed this situation many times during his pontificate, especially in Pastores dabo vobis where he offers a clear theological vision and a program of formation to overcome the current crisis of priestly identity. In his new book McGovern offers a deep analysis of the Pope's theology of priesthood, drawing not only from Pastores dabo vobis, but also from his Holy Thursday Letters and other important writings on this topic. In this study the author deals with core aspects of priestly identity under three main headings--theological, spiritual, and pastoral--in the context of service to the lay faithful and the evangelization required of the Church in the new millennium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE life of the diocesan priest is so difficult-it is perhaps the most difficult of all lives in the Church-that any attempt to help him, no matter how inadequate, needs no justification. So I make no apology for publishing a second collection of notes on a subject which I have already discussed in The Spiritual Life of the Priest. The matter of these notes is not new to the readers of Pagan Missions, and it is due to the kindness of the Editor of that journal that I am able to compile these pages. It is not the only kindness for which I have to thank him. Despite the high holiness to which a priest is called and the eminent sanctity of the office which he fulfills, his life has to be lived amidst all the difficulties of the world without the protection and the preparation that is usually given to religious who, as such, are merely bound to tend to perfection. The diocesan priest therefore deserves every help that can be given to him to live that life of perfection which his office demands from him. Where is he to look for help? To anticipate the final answer to this question, we may remind him of God's assurance to the great apostle: 'Paul, my grace is sufficient for thee'. 'The spirit of holiness', conferred on him in ordination by the very words of the Sacrament, assures him of this continual grace of God. And, in passing, let us remember that the word grace implies something given beyond merit, or even without merit. It is gratuitous. One could truly rewrite the text: 'Paul, my mercy is sufficient for thee. My goodness is sufficient for thee!' And it might be well to repeat it with a new accent: 'Paul, My goodness is sufficient for thee-do not worry about your own lack of goodness!' This seems too good to be true. But that is the great truth-that no man has even conceived the things God has prepared for those who love him. We are dealing with infinite Goodness, and only infinite Truth can give it adequate expression.
