Book Reservoir Sedimentation

Download or read book Reservoir Sedimentation written by G.W. Annandale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on reservoir sedimentation in recent years has been aimed mainly at water resources projects in developing countries. These countries, especially in Africa, often have to cope with long droughts, flash floods and severe erosion problems. Large reservoir capacities are required to capture water provided by flash floods so as to ensure the supply of water in periods of drought. The problem arising however is that these floods, due to their tremendous stream power, carry enormous volumes of sediment which, due to the size of reservoirs, are virtually deposited in toto in the reservoir basin, leading to fast deterioration of a costly investment. Accurate forecasting of reservoir behaviour is therefore of the utmost importance. This book fills a gap in current literature by providing in one volume comprehensive coverage of techniques required to practically investigate the effects sediment deposition in reservoirs has on the viability of water resources projects. Current techniques for practically estimating sediment yield from catchments, estimating the volume of sediment expected to deposit in reservoirs, predicting sediment distribution and calculating scour downstream of reservoirs are evaluated and presented. The liberal use of diagrams and graphs to explain the various techniques enhances understanding and makes practical application simple. A major feature of the book is the application of stream power theory to explain the process of reservoir sedimentation and to develop four new methods for predicting sediment distribution in reservoirs. The book is primarily directed at practising engineers involved in the planning and design of water resources projects and at post-graduate students interested in this field of study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the mechanisms of reservoir sedimentation being well known for a long time, sustainable and preventive measures are rarely taken into consideration in the design of new reservoirs. To avoid operational problems of powerhouses, sedimentation is often treated for existing reservoirs with measures which are efficient only for a limited time.Th

Book Erosion and Sediment Control for Reservoir Sedimentation from Agricultural Activities in Highlands

Download or read book Erosion and Sediment Control for Reservoir Sedimentation from Agricultural Activities in Highlands written by Lariyah Bte Mohd Sidek and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, the lands in Cameron Highland have been opened and leveled for agricultural farming and intensive crop production. The overall agricultural coverage is relatively small and is mostly done on steep slopes. The high usage of fertilizer and pesticides by local farmers, accompanied by the increase in the frequency of major storm events had given rise to high levels of soil erosion and environmental pollution. In this study, a guideline has been stablished to be used by the local authorities and farmers to conserve soil, protect the natural waterways and the surrounding environments from man-made pollutions.

Book Silting and Desilting of Reservoirs

Download or read book Silting and Desilting of Reservoirs written by Dan G. Batuca and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of river dams and the storage of water have been a strategy for survival for many centuries. Reservoirs have diverse functions, providing irrigation, water supply, storage of water, flood control, navigation and power generation. The silting of a reservoir is an unavoidable process. Although it cannot be halted, silting can be slowed down and controlled by a variety of soil conservation practices and by modifying agricultural practices in the catchment area. Other methods of reducing silting include the placing of certain engineering structures in the river system and the introduction of adequate strategies of reservoir operation. Silting and Desilting of Reservoirs includes aspects such as hydraulics, sediment transport, silting, sediment distribution, calculation and prediction of silting and solutions to reservoir silting.

Book Managing The Flow Of Water From Reservoirs

Download or read book Managing The Flow Of Water From Reservoirs written by Elegbeleye Oladipo and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, , language: English, abstract: Reservoirs have been since the earliest civilisation, being part of man kind strategy for survival. These water storage facilities have been created since time immemorial mainly by constructing dams accross rivers and are intended both for capturing water that would otherwise proceed down river towards the oceans or lakes as well as for storing the water for as long as possible, till when needed and used. Sediments which is naturaly released from the catchment areas into the reservoir via contributing stream is impeded by the water bodies in the reservoir which are retained by the dams and to a large extent the sediments is permanently trapped there in. This paper talks about managing the flow of reservoirs and regulated river or dam and how to improve its sustainability by balancing the needs of the society, the economy, the environment and the ecosystems. Likewise its environmental goals, its role on a global scale with the laws and regulations guiding it are also discussed in this paper.
