Book excerpt: This study analyzed gambling behaviors among Club/Intramural/Recreational (CIR) athletes attending state and private universities in Southwestern Pennsylvania. More specifically, the researcher examined CIR student athlete’s gambling behavior and participation in gambling activities at Division II institutions, including mid-sized state/public colleges or universities, and Division III institutions, including small private colleges or universities. Using a Survey Research Design, this study identified significant group differences in gambling involvement, types of gambling students participate in, and gambling related issues/problems across CIR student athlete/nonathlete populations as well as across Division II and III institutions. This study fills a gap in academic literature pertaining to gambling behavior and CIR athletes. Additionally, this research study adds to the existing literature to help better understand gambling behaviors, problem gambling, and pathological gambling occurring with college students. The findings of this study have the ability to impact the way gambling prevention programs are presented and administered to college students and specific student populations.

Book Opinion of Division III Student athletes and Directors of Athletics Regarding the Deterrent Value of Institutional Drug testing Programs

Download or read book Opinion of Division III Student athletes and Directors of Athletics Regarding the Deterrent Value of Institutional Drug testing Programs written by Kevin Gerald Wood and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract:The current study was designed to determine if differences in opinion existed among student-athletes (SAs) at five NCAA Division III (DIII) institutions with (n 250), and five institutions without (n = 235) a drug-testing program, regarding the deterrent value of institutional drug testing. The opinions of DIll Directors of Athletics (ADs; n = 10) were also examined. Differences were examined using the Student-Athlete Drug-Testing Questionnaire and the Athletic Director Drug-Testing Questionnaire, and analyzed using chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests. SAs and ADs were surveyed about: (a) institutional testing, (b) current NCAA DIII Championship testing, and (c) hypothetical NCAA DIII year-round testing. ADs responded similarly to questions about the three testing programs. SAs responded similarly to questions about the deterrent value (personally) of the three testing programs, while drug-testing SAs responded significantly higher than non drug-testing SAs when asked about their peers. Practical support was found for the use of drug testing as a deterrent to steroid use. As ADs and the NCAA consider increased drug testing in DIII, more research is needed to evaluate the strength of testing as a deterrent.

Book Unwinding Madness

Download or read book Unwinding Madness written by Gerald S. Gurney and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical look at the tension between the larger role of the university and the commercialization of college sports Unwinding Madness is the most comprehensive examination to date of how the NCAA has lost its way in the governance of intercollegiate athletics—and why it is incapable of achieving reform and must be replaced. The NCAA has placed commercial success above its responsibilities to protect the academic primacy, health and well-being of college athletes and fallen into an educational, ethical, and economic crisis. As long as intercollegiate athletics reside in the higher education environment, these programs must be academically compatible with their larger institutions, subordinate to their educational mission, and defensible from a not-for-profit organizational standpoint. The issue has never been a matter of whether intercollegiate athletics belongs in higher education as an extracurricular offering. Rather, the perennial challenge has been how these programs have been governed and conducted. The authors propose detailed solutions, starting with the creation of a new national governance organization to replace the NCAA. At the college level, these proposals will not diminish the revenue production capacity of sports programs but will restore academic integrity to the enterprise, provide fairer treatment of college athletes with better health protections, and restore the rights and freedoms of athletes, which have been taken away by a professionalized athletics mentality that controls the cost of its athlete labor force and overpays coaches and athletic directors. Unwinding Madness recognizes that there is no easy fix to the problems now facing college athletics. But the book does offer common sense, doable solutions that respect the rights of athletes, protects their health and well-being while delivering on the promise of a bona fide educational degree program.

Book BEYOND THE LINES EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES ON NCAA STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH

Download or read book BEYOND THE LINES EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES ON NCAA STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH written by Braden J. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes are faced with unique stressors that put them at increased risk for various biopsychosocial-spiritual (BPSS) health concerns. Additionally, given the high prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in diverse populations, it is likely that many student-athletes are also coping with challenges stemming from negative childhood events. Despite a substantial amount of evidence linking ACEs to deleterious BPSS health outcomes in both young adult and adult populations, little is known about the impact of ACEs on the overall health of student-athletes. This dissertation is comprised of the following six chapters: (a) an introduction to the dissertation, (b) a literature review exploring BPSS health concerns experienced by NCAA student-athletes and the impact of ACEs on health outcomes, (c) a systematic review examining the effectiveness of interventions being used to improve BPSS health outcomes among student-athletes, (d) a proposed methodology for the original research study, (e) an original research study exploring the interplay between ACEs and BPSS health outcomes among Division I, II, and III NCAA student-athletes (N = 477) who represented 20 sports across 53 universities, and (f) a series of implications and recommendations for researchers, clinicians, and NCAA athletics personnel.
