Book The Preston Geothermal Resources Renewed Interest in a Known Geothermal Resource Area

Download or read book The Preston Geothermal Resources Renewed Interest in a Known Geothermal Resource Area written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Preston Geothermal prospect is located in northern Cache Valley approximately 8 kilometers north of the city of Preston, in southeast Idaho. The Cache Valley is a structural graben of the northern portion of the Basin and Range Province, just south of the border with the Eastern Snake River Plain (ESRP). This is a known geothermal resource area (KGRA) that was evaluated in the 1970's by the State of Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) and by exploratory wells drilled by Sunedco Energy Development. The resource is poorly defined but current interpretations suggest that it is associated with the Cache Valley structural graben. Thermal waters moving upward along steeply dipping northwest trending basin and range faults emanate in numerous hot springs in the area. Springs reach temperatures as hot as 84° C. Traditional geothermometry models estimated reservoir temperatures of approximately 125° C in the 1970's study. In January of 2014, interest was renewed in the areas when a water well drilled to 79 m (260 ft) yielded a bottom hole temperature of 104° C (217° F). The well was sampled in June of 2014 to investigate the chemical composition of the water for modeling geothermometry reservoir temperature. Traditional magnesium corrected Na-K-Ca geothermometry estimates this new well to be tapping water from a thermal reservoir of 227° C (440° F). Even without the application of improved predictive methods, the results indicate much higher temperatures present at much shallower depths than previously thought. This new data provides strong support for further investigation and sampling of wells and springs in the Northern Cache Valley, proposed for the summer of 2015. The results of the water will be analyzed utilizing a new multicomponent equilibrium geothermometry (MEG) tool called Reservoir Temperature Estimate (RTEst) to obtain an improved estimate of the reservoir temperature. The new data suggest that other KGRAs and overlooked areas may need to be investigated using improved geothermal exploration methods.

Book The Preston Geothermal Prospect

Download or read book The Preston Geothermal Prospect written by Wade C. Worthing and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Preston geothermal prospect is centered on Clifton Hill, located in the Cache Valley, a north-south trending structural graben of the northeastern portion of the Basin and Range Province, just south of the border with the Eastern Snake River Plain (ESRP). The area was studied previously during the 1970s and 80s, (involved geophysical, geochemical, and hydrological studies) which culminated with the drilling of geothermal exploration wells by Sunedco Energy Development in 1979 and 1980. However, commercial interests were abandoned. Today, the local geothermal system in the area remains poorly defined but current interpretations suggest movement of thermal fluids along localized Basin and Range structures. I conducted high resolution potential field (gravity and magnetic) studies, collecting data along several profiles across Clifton Hill, to map these structures. These data were combined with a survey of the local aquifer and analyzed to better understand the geothermal system.

Book Geochemical and Biogeochemical Reaction Modeling

Download or read book Geochemical and Biogeochemical Reaction Modeling written by Craig M. Bethke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-09 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of reaction processes in the Earth's crust and on its surface, both in the laboratory and in the field. A clear exposition of the underlying equations and calculation techniques is balanced by a large number of fully worked examples. The book uses The Geochemist's Workbench® modeling software, developed by the author and already installed at over 1000 universities and research facilities worldwide. Since publication of the first edition, the field of reaction modeling has continued to grow and find increasingly broad application. In particular, the description of microbial activity, surface chemistry, and redox chemistry within reaction models has become broader and more rigorous. These areas are covered in detail in this new edition, which was originally published in 2007. This text is written for graduate students and academic researchers in the fields of geochemistry, environmental engineering, contaminant hydrology, geomicrobiology, and numerical modeling.
