Book The Preacher s Complete Homiletical Commentary on the New Testament

Download or read book The Preacher s Complete Homiletical Commentary on the New Testament written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary on the New Testament: On an Original Plan; With Critical and Explanatory Notes, Indices, &C., &C The authorship of the epistle - That it was written by St. Paul has never been seriously doubted. His authorship is upheld by the unanimous testimony of the ancient Church. Allusions and indirect citations are found in the writings of the apostolic Fathers - Clement, Ignatius, Polycarp, and Justin Martyn. Or whoever wrote the Oratio ad ecos. The internal evidence of Pauline author ship is conclusive by allusions to the history and by the self-portrayal of the writer's character. No forger ever made an imitation in which were so many secret threads of similarity, which bore such a stamp of originality, or in which the character, the passion, the mode of thought and reasoning, were so naturally represented. The apostle's mental characteristics are indelibly impressed on the letter. The time of writing the epistle. - Lightfoot, in disagreement from most earlier interpreters, maintained that this epistle was written between 2 Corinthians and Romans-that is, during the latter part of Paul's journey in Macedonia, or the earlier part of his sojourn at Corinth, towards the close of the year 57 or 58 a.d. Dr. Beet comes to the same conclusion. There is nothing in the letter itself to fix definitely either the place or time of its composition. From chap. I. 9, iv. 13, v. 3 we gather that St. Paul had now been in Galatia twice; the epistle was therefore subsequent to the journey which he took across Asia Minor in setting out on his third missionary tour (acts xviii. 2 2 - xix. All students are agreed that it belongs to the period of the legalist controversy and to the second group of the epistles. On every account one is inclined to refer the letter to the last rather than to an earlier period of the third missionary tour. Comparison with the other epistles of the group raises this probability almost to a certainty, and enables us to fix the date and occasion of this letter with confidence. Excerpt: ...of, along with the signal defeat of the enemy; for verse 2 contains a statement of the subject of the whole chapter. This thought is again alluded to in verse 9, and enlarged in verses 13-18 and 23, where the distinction is drawn, and the greatest importance attached to it, between those who spontaneously offered themselves to the great work, and those who drew back--the one being mentioned with special marks of honour, aud the other being consigned to reproach, and even to cursing. (1.) Everyman who came forward at Barak's call was a volunteer. It was the act of his own free-will. Barak was indeed directed to raise 10,000 men out ofZebnlun and Naphtali; but in what manner? It is not given in the form of a peremptory command, either to the tribes as such, or to individuals, saying, " Go, and fight against this company," but " Who will go?" Hence the careful wording of the charge given to Barak, " Go and draw towards Mount Tabor " (iv. 6)--implying that no one was to be compelled, but the act was to come of their own accord. And when Barak went to fulfil his commission, he called them--he did not command them under penalties. Their acceptance of all risks was their own spontaneous act. Barak seems to have found no difficulty in finding the number of men wanted; and besides these, there seem to have been a considerable number of volunteers from the other tribes. With men of true principle, though not expressly called, it was yet motive enough to have the opportunity offered. They required no farther inducement. But the feature in the account to which God calls special attention is, that those who came forward to meet this all-important juncture for God's cause, did so by an act of self-surrender. It was in the...

Book Romans Everyman s Bible Commentary

Download or read book Romans Everyman s Bible Commentary written by Alan Johnson and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2000-04-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Romans is one of the best-loved books in the entire Bible. Paul's explanation of the doctrine of justification by faith is rooted deep within the hearts of most Christians. Further, the acknowledgment that we are not under law, but under grace has given Christians freedom from the bondage of legalism for centuries. However, Romans is a complex book filled with difficult theology. To make this revolutionary book more accessible to the common man, Alan Johnson has written Everyman's Bible Commentary on Romans. The original two volumes are now combined into one complete volume. The commentary is also updated, expanded, and revised. The easy style and careful presentation make this an excellent commentary for laymen and pastors alike. Study Paul's discussion of the believer's new life in Christ, with their release from sin and death, and the faithfulness of God. Be encouraged and strengthened with a more in-depth understanding of your position before Christ with this commentary on Romans.
