Book The Earlier Stone Age Settlement of Scandinavia

Download or read book The Earlier Stone Age Settlement of Scandinavia written by Grahame Clark and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1975-01-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Ice Age Scandinavia was submerged under thick ice sheets, and it was only in the subsequent warmer conditions, as the ice receded, that colonisation by plants, animals and men became possible. In this book Grahame Clark examines the expansion of human settlement into this area, with particular emphasis on the economic aspects of the societies under discussion. The account is carried down to the time (3500-3000 BC) when mixed farming, including cereal agriculture, was being introduced into the area. The book is fully illustrated and documented by many maps and tables. It provides a rounded picture of the economy of the first settlers and their descendants in an area whose archaeological past has been exceptionally fully investigated and documented. The colonisation of Scandinavia is considered in its European context, but the main emphasis lies on the process of change and the continuity of settlement in the territory itself.

Book The Neolithic of South Sweden

Download or read book The Neolithic of South Sweden written by Mats P. Malmer and published by Akademibokhandelsgruppen AB. This book was released on 2002 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed study of the Neolithic cultures of South Sweden c.4000-2400 BC: the Funnel Beaker culture (TRB), the Pitted Ware culture (GRK) and the Battle Axe culture (STR). Malmer presents a wealth of archaeological evidence and interpretation for the three great successive periods of economic change and innovation from hunting-fishing to farming. Malmer reaches the conclusion that these changes were not due to migration of people or improved climatic conditions, but were due to economic/ideological factors, with new ideas being spread most likely by personal contact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Archaeomineralogy” provides a wealth of information for mineralogists, geologists and archaeologists involved in archaeometric studies. The first edition was very well-received and praised for its systematic description of the rocks and minerals used throughout the world by our ancestors and for its excellent list of over 900 references, providing easy access to the fields of archaeomineralogy and geoarchaeology. This second edition of “Archaeomineralogy” takes an updated and expanded look at the human use of rocks and minerals from the Paleolithic through to the 18th century CE. It retains the structure and main themes of the original but has been revised and expanded with more than 200 new references within the text, a bibliography of additional references not included in the text, a dozen new figures (drawings and photos), coverage of many additional important mineral, rock, and gem materials, a broader geographic scope, particularly but not limited to Eastern Europe, and a more thorough review of early contributions to archaeomineralogy, especially those of Agricola. From reviews of the first edition: "... crammed full of useful information, is well-balanced using both new and Old World examples of the archaeomaterials described. It also provides a broad, but of necessity, all too brief overview of the geological raw materials used in antiquity." -- Geoscientist "...provides much interesting discussion of how particular names came to be employed by archaeologists working in different regions of the world.... much to offer for any geologist or archaeologist interested in minerals and rocks and how they have been used in the past." -- Mineralium Deposita "... a gem of a book, it's strength is that it is encyclopedic in content, if not in layout, draws on a wealth of field experience and almost every sentence contains a nugget of information" -- The Holocene
