Had they thrown their influence on the side of the French there is every reason to believe that this country, which to-day offers the greatest opportunities for the development of the human race, would not be under the rule of the descendants ff the liberty loving Teutons. If this little volume should serve in some small degree to keep green the memory of an unfortunate people, who seemed by nature destined for greater things, then its mission will lave been accomplished. Indians in the homes, on the roads, working on the farms, and building houses; Indian children with ball clubs, snow snakes, and arrows; Indian babies upon the backs of their mothers; Indian corn bread boiling in the kettles under the trees; Indians here, there, and everywhere. The straight black hair and shining black eyes that mark the race everywhere meet you here. You hear the curious intonations of the strange language all about you, and yet you are only thirty miles south of Buffalo and five hundred miles from New York City. As you ride through the Reservation you note many farms of which Indian owners may well be proud and others of which they should be ashamed. You will see corn, wheat, potatoes, tomatoes, and other products of the farm in better condition than those of the neighboring white man; and you will see the crops of others sadly choked with weeds and perishing for want of care. The owners of these last expect to live next winter upon the corn and beans and potatoes of their more industrious neighbors. Would that for white man and for Indian the ancient law might be enforced, "If a man will not work, neither shall he eat." A few years ago the old Mission church was rapidly falling into decay. This book is written by Chief Elias Johnson, known as Lone Pine Tree, for the purpose of defending Native American character and explaining the customs of the Six Nations Chief Johnson was born on the Tuscarora reservation in upstate New York. He writes forcefully to defend Native Americans from the perception that they were barbarous, untrustworthy savages. He writes that the Americans sometimes acted as though Native Americans are "scarcely human." He ably refutes the accusation that natives indiscriminately killed and scalped settlers. Reading the Native American perspective on these early arguments between settlers and natives is a refreshing change. To further illustrate his points, Chief Johnson tells the story of Mary Jemmison, a white woman who was kidnapped as a child and went to live among the Iroquois. Despite the inauspicious beginning, Jemmison did not want to return to white life, having married and had children with a Native American man, and re-marrying another Iroquois after her first husband died. A lively chapter concerns the Iroquois and Tuscarora creation stories, which feature several monsters that the early Native Americans had to overcome. This includes stone giants, flying head monsters, giant mosquitoes and mammoth bears. It is these tales that give absorbing insights into Native American culture. Legends, Traditions and Laws, of the Iroquois, or Six Nations, and History of the Tuscarora Indians also reprints many of legal documents and treaties with the U.S. Government. At the time Chief Johnson was writing, the tribes still believed they could encourage the government to uphold the treaties and recognize their rights.
