Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paratrisika (or Paratrimsika) is a short Tantra which has been held in the highest esteem by Kashmir Saivism or Trika. After Somananda, Abhinavagupta has written two commentaries on it, a short one (Laghuvrtti) and an extensive one the present Vivarana which is presented here for the first time in an English translation. The Paratrisika Vivarana is one of the most fascinating but also most difficult texts of the Kashmir Saiva School, and of the mystical philosophical literature of India as a whole. It deals with Ultimate Reality (anuttara or para) and with the methods of realization, centred above all in the theory and practice of the mantra. Abhinavagupta displays here his great exegetical genius and presents a penetrating metaphysics of language, of the Word (vak) and its various stages in relation to consciousness. His language reflects in a luminous fashion the mystical experience contained in this text. The present translation of Abhinavagupta's masterpiece will not only be a milestone in the study of Kashmir Saivism, but it also makes available one of the major mystical texts of the Indian tradition to readers interested in philosophy and spirituality. Book The Doctrine of Recognition

Download or read book The Doctrine of Recognition written by Kṣemarāja and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this world there are some devoted people who are undeveloped in reflection and have not taken pains in studying difficult works, but who nevertheless aspire after the enlightenment that blossoms forth with the descent of Sakti. For their sake the doctrine of recognition is being explained briefly."--Kṣemarāja The word pratyabhijñā means recognition. All individuals are divine, but they have forgotten their real nature and are identified with their psycho-physical mechanisms. This teaching is meant to enable them to recognize their real nature. It offers the spiritual practice through which they can realize their true Selves. This book occupies the same place in Śaiva or Trika literature that Vedāntasāra does in Vedanta. It avoids all polemics and gives a succinct form for the main tenents of the Pratyabhijñā system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together over 25 years of Arindam Chakrabarti's original research in philosophy on issues of epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind. Organized under the three basic concepts of a thing out there in the world, the self who perceives it, and other subjects or selves, his work revolves around a set of realism links. Examining connections between metaphysical stances toward the world, selves, and universals, Chakrabarti engages with classical Indian and modern Western philosophical approaches to a number of live topics including the refutation of idealism; the question of the definability of truth, and the possibility of truths existing unknown to anyone; the existence of non-conceptual perception; and our knowledge of other minds. He additionally makes forays into fundamental questions regarding death, darkness, absence, and nothingness. Along with conceptual clarification and progress towards alternative solutions to these substantial philosophical problems, Chakrabarti demonstrates the advantage of doing philosophy in a cosmopolitan fashion. Beginning with an analysis of the concept of a thing, and ending with an analysis of the concept of nothing, Realisms Interlinked offers a preview of a future metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of mind without borders.

Book excerpt: This book is a translation and explanation of the Pratyabhijna Hridayam in clear, modern language, that makes this profound work available to modern yogis who are more interested in succeeding at yoga, than struggling with the arcane details of tradition and the philosophy. The Pratyabhijna Hridayam is one of the root texts of Kashmir Shaivism. It gives in very concentrated form a complete description of the situation and path of highest yoga. Many translations of this text are available, but most are primarily concerned with the philosophy and tradition of Kashmir Shaivism, which while interesting is not essential for realization. This book clearly gives the "short path" yoga in its entirety. Peter Brown is a fully realized yogi, who teaches mastery of yoga to advanced students. www.theopendoorway.org

Book The Philosophy of Yoga in Contemporary American Fiction

Download or read book The Philosophy of Yoga in Contemporary American Fiction written by Sukhbir Singh and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Second World War, yoga has asserted its presence in America and impacted the American culture, arts, and literature. This book offers extensive explications of Saul Bellow’s Mr. Sammler’s Planet, J.D. Salinger’s “Teddy,” John Updike’s S.: A Novel, and Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five in the light of the four different yoga philosophies interwoven into their respective narrative structures. The comparative analyses of these four contemporary American fictions unveil the deeper mystical motifs implicit in their plots, stories, themes, and characters’ behavioural patterns. The exhaustive interpretations of texts in the five successive chapters put forth an exposition of how the ancient Indic philosophy and contemporary American fiction interact to explicate and enrich each other. The book adds a unique, unconventional dimension to the comparative and interdisciplinary investigation into contemporary American fiction and thereby opens up new vistas of an off-beat interface between the Eastern philosophy and Western literature.
