Book State and Local Population Projections

Download or read book State and Local Population Projections written by Stanley K. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-21 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial plans for this book sprang from a late-afternoon conversation in a hotel bar. All three authors were attending the 1996 meeting of the Population As- ciation of America in New Orleans. While nursing drinks and expounding on a variety of topics, we began talking about our current research projects. It so happened that all three of us had been entertaining the notion of writing a book on state and local population projections. Recognizing the enormity of the project for a single author, we quickly decided to collaborate. Had we not decided to work together, it is unlikely that this book ever would have been written. The last comprehensive treatment of state and local population projections was Don Pittenger’s excellent work Projecting State and Local Populations (1976). Many changes affecting the production of population projections have occurred since that time. Technological changes have led to vast increases in computing power, new data sources, the development of GIS, and the creation of the Internet. The procedures for applying a number of projection methods have changed considerably, and several completely new methods have been developed.

Book Management Research by Practitioners

Download or read book Management Research by Practitioners written by Reno Symmank and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook focus on management research by practitioners. The book would not have been possible without the German cohort 6, who set the forum for lively discussions and supported all researchers on their journey to its doctorate. The book is set up in three chapters. Chapter I"One of the main triggers for this thesis was my direct experience of the financial crisis, as it showed that many principles and assumptions that were believed to be "carved in stone" were challenged overnight. Investors lost confidence as Corporate Governance turned out to be very poor in reality, although companies consistently declared in their disclosures that they followed good Corporate governance guidelines". This section develops a Corporate governance reporting taxonomy, which can be used for electronic reporting and is the basis for the digitalisation in accounting. A mixed-method approach s applied which combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. Chapter II deals with an analysis of marketing process governance in multinational enterprises and is based on an empirical analysis of FT500 index corporations. The literature showed, that there is currently little substantial understanding of how activities and processes in marketing can be sourced and geographically relocated. However, there is substantial evidence in scholarly and managerial literature that marketing process reallocation is a subject of increasing attention for the last five years. Chapter III focus on out of stock situations (OOS) in retail stores. One of the major advantages of store-based retail formats is the availability of products. The unavailability of products is a major threat for store-based retail formats as OOS situations are considered to be some of the most displeasing occurrences for consumers, resulting in dissatisfaction. As avoiding or recovering from OOS situations are matters of allocating limited resources (e.g. staff, money) wherever they are most effective, this work recommends actions that retailers can take to manage OOS occurrences at store-based retail formats to increase consumer satisfaction. All three researcher describe in their reflexive diaries how thy managed to be sucessfull on their long jounrney to the finalisation of their thesis. We all three would also like to thank our supervisors and all of our contributors. Let the words speak for themselves.

Book Artificial Intelligence in Architecture

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence in Architecture written by Matias del Campo and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-05-13 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in architectural design have achieved a critical mass and exploded into the mainstream of architectural imaginations. From practical applications in design and constructionto the implications for architectural theory to a plethora of novel tools for accelerated morphological studies, what has become clear is that the discipline is passing a threshold that fundamentally changes architecture as a whole. However, the most radical change is the interrogation and novel discussion of authorship and agency in design ecologies driven by synthetic imaginations. What does it mean for authorship when more than 50 per cent of the content is generated by a nonhuman player? This issue seems more pressing than ever. In a world that is being transformed by AI on a daily basis, what is the role of the sole genius, and designers, artists and architects? This AD dives deep into current discussions about the human position in architectural design, which is increasingly entangled in an AI-driven design context. Contributors: Cesare Battelli, Phil Bernstein, Mario Carpo, Benjamin Ennemoser and Ingrid Mayrhofer-Hufnagl, Sarah Fox, Wanyu He, Andrew Kudless, Ryan Vincent Manning, Sandra Manninger, Kyle Steinfeld, Andrew Witt, and Michael Young.

Book Disease Class and Social Change

Download or read book Disease Class and Social Change written by Marc Arnold and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This previously unexamined history of open-air treatment in English coastal resorts demonstrates how contrasting meanings were assigned to tuberculosis along lines of class. It assesses the shifting inter-relation of medical, political and social forces in determining responses to this devastating disease, and analyses the relationship between scientific ideas, in particular social evolution and germ theory, and attitudes to poverty and chronic disease. In Folkestone and Sandgate these conflicting perceptions of the disease were highlighted in a clash of interests between reformist public health officials in overcrowded London Boroughs and a provincial plutocracy with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo in an elite health resort. This local controversy precipitated calls for state treatment of the disease and throws light on the ways in which doctors, politicians and academics have tended to frame the issue of tuberculosis according to their own political perspectives and values. Medical approaches to tuberculosis varied between viewing it as a disease of poverty that could most efficiently be eradicated through addressing problems of poor housing and overcrowding to a focus on the isolation and sterilisation of those deemed to possess an hereditary taint. Conflicts between an infection model of the disease and a focus on social reform still characterise approaches to tuberculosis treatment today.
