Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practitioner's Handbook of Treatments: Or, the Principles of Therapeutics The sale of a second and larger edition of this work tells of the favour it finds with its readers. The work has been carefully revised, and considerable additions have been made to it. A chapter on "The Dietary in Acute Disease and Malassimilation," tells of the growing importance of dietetics in the treatment of disease. A second new chapter has been added on "The Management of Convalescence," which it is hoped will add to the value of the work. The Author takes this opportunity to record his thanks to Dr. D. G. L. Johnston for kindly aid in the supervision of the proof sheets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Practitioner s Handbook of Materia Medica and Therapeutics Based Upon Established Physiological Actions and the Indications in Small Doses

Download or read book A Practitioner s Handbook of Materia Medica and Therapeutics Based Upon Established Physiological Actions and the Indications in Small Doses written by Thomas Stewart Blair and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practitioner's Handbook of Materia Medica and Therapeutics Based Upon Established Physiological Actions and the Indications in Small Doses: To Which Is Added Some Pharmaceutical Data and the Most Important Therapeutic Developments of Sectarian Medicine as Explained Along Rational Lines The neglect of this subject by laboratory investigators, most of our clinical teachers and our physiologists, makes it imperative to draw considerably upon the mass of more or less valuable sec tarian literature. This has been done in as nearly a judicial spirit as possible. There are so many instances where all three schools of medicine substantially agree upon the indications that the task is not so difficult as might appear upon the surface. Where such an agreement is not obvious, divergent views will be carefully weighed, and whatever data appears to possess the most substantial Chemic, physiologic, and clinical foundation will be given preference over anything of a theoretic nature. This is a series of studies, and is not a treatise; a volume of suggestions, and not one of principles. It presupposes a knowl edge oi the established materia medica and rational therapeutics. And presents from the standpoint of a seasoned regular what he apprehends we and all physicians, regardless of school, are coming to recognize and practice as common ground. Book A CBT Practitioner s Guide to ACT

Download or read book A CBT Practitioner s Guide to ACT written by Joseph V. Ciarrochi and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2008-12-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is expanding rapidly. Many of those who are interested in ACT are trained using a mechanistic cognitive behavioral therapy model (or MCBT). Utilizing both ACT and MCBT together can be difficult, because the approaches make different philosophical assumptions and have different theoretical models. The core purpose of the book is to help provide a bridge between ACT and MCBT. The emphasis of this book will be applied psychology, but it will also have important theoretical implications. The book will highlight where ACT and MCBT differ in their predictions, and will suggest directions for future research. It will be grounded in current research and will make clear to the reader what is known and what has yet to be tested. The core theme of A CBT-Practitioner's Guide to ACT is that ACT and CBT can be unified if they share the same philosophical underpinnings (functional contextualism) and theoretical orientation (relational frame theory, or RFT). Thus, from a CBT practitioner's perspective, the mechanistic philosophical core of MCBT can be dropped, and the mechanistic information processing theory of CBT can be held lightly and ignored in contexts where it is not useful. From an ACT practitioner's perspective, the decades of CBT research on cognitive schema and dysfunctional beliefs provides useful information about how clients might be cognitively fused and how this fusion might be undermined. The core premise of the book is that CBT and ACT can be beneficially integrated, provided both are approached from a similar philosophical and theoretical framework. The authors acknowledge that practitioners often have little interest in extended discussions of philosophy and theory. Thus, their discussion of functional contextualism and RFT is grounded clearly in clinical practice. They talk about what functional contextualism means for the practitioner in the room, with a particular client. They describe how RFT can help the practitioner to understand the barriers to effective client action.

Book A Practitioner s Guide to Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Download or read book A Practitioner s Guide to Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy written by Raymond A. DiGiuseppe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensively updated to include clinical findings over the last two decades, this third edition of A Practitioner's Guide to Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy reviews the philosophy, theory, and clinical practice of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). This model is based on the work of Albert Ellis, who had an enormous influence on the field of psychotherapy over his 50 years of practice and scholarly writing. Designed for both therapists-in-training and seasoned professionals, this practical treatment manual and guide introduces the basic principles of rational-emotive behavior therapy, explains general therapeutic strategies, and offers many illustrative dialogues between therapist and patient. The volume breaks down each stage of therapy to present the exact procedures and skills therapists need, and numerous case studies illustrate how to use these skills. The authors describe both technical and specific strategic interventions, and they stress taking an integrative approach. The importance of building a therapeutic alliance and the use of cognitive, emotive, evocative, imaginal, and behavioral interventions serves as the unifying theme of the approach. Intervention models are presented for the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, anger, personality disorders, and addictions. Psychologists, clinical social workers, mental health counselors, psychotherapists, and students and trainees in these areas will find this book useful in learning to apply rational-emotive behavior therapy in practice.
