Excerpt: ...will have been gained, and the tone and colour approached more nearly with each succeeding day's work. Now mix up on your palette the middle flesh colour. If slightly toned with grey--that is to say, something less pure than the clear carnation, as is so often the case--be careful not to overdo the greyness at the outset, or the purity of the colour will suffer. You will probably not "hit" this middle colour closely enough on the white canvas; it may be either too pink or too yellow. Persevere with it, and then leave it for a few minutes and come back to it with a fresh eye, the better to judge and correct any false note in it. It is the key to the whole colour scheme, and therefore of the utmost importance. Next, or better still, about the same time, paint the mass in its general colour of the hair, and any white note that occurs about the neck, and very thinly over the rest of the canvas. Then take up the darkest shadows, thus securing the salient passages of the drawing and the higher lights. In doing this, think less of the fact that you are indicating features than that you are modelling the head as a whole in its protruding and receding planes. These three tone colours should roughly suggest the main modelling of the face. In taking the hair further do not attempt to separate hairs; treat the whole simply as you would silk or satin, just shapes of shadows, middle colour and lights, matching them in their absolute relation to the flesh. Then the lower flesh tones, preserving the shape of masses, and model the features, keeping all wet together. Having thus covered the whole face, before elaborating, look to the colour-quality of each part. You may find some difficulty in deciding the colour tendency of the flesh shadows....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improve your perception and use of colour in oil paint and gain many practical insights into techniques, set up and more in this fantastic book from the artist John Collier. Broken down into sections on the Practical and Theory of painting Collier is particularly useful for those looking to paint (or study) in his own Pre-Raphaelite style, although any student of oil painting would do well to study his techniques. The section on Theory discusses colour in a way very different to modern teachers, so while it may be difficult to understand for some others may find that it suits their mind and opens up new concepts. Collier was particularly well known for his use of colour, portraits and history painting, and his skills in these areas shine through in the advice he gives in A Manual of Oil Painting. This makes this little book a must read for those interested in the art of his period from both practical and academic perspectives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Landscape Painting in Oil Colours The following pages treat of one branch of the Art of Oil Painting - that of imitating upon canvas, with fidelity and truth, the varied aspects of Nature, as they present themselves to the eye in Landscape. It is taken for granted that the pupil is so far acquainted with the general principles of Drawing and Perspective, as to be able to apply them with facility and certainty to the representation, in out line, of a given view or subject. This being the case, he will see principles and rules here laid down which will place within his reach the power of secur ing to himself one of the most delightful and agree able accomplishments he can possess. These rules he will find compressed within moderate limits but he will find them also to be fully sufficient to ensure no mean proficiency in the practice of the Art, if hewill apply himself to the pursuit with thoughtful diligence and patient assiduity. In order that the subject may be laid before him clearly and methodically, the matter is generally divided into three parts. The First Part consists of a description of the Implements and Materials used in the branch of Art here treated of. The Second Part contains a concise but clear explanation of the general Processes and Manipulations by which the various pictorial effects can be faithfully represented. The Third Part con sists of an explanation of the Principles upon which a Landscape should be painted, and of the Mode of applying the processes and manipulations described in the previous part.
