Book excerpt: An examination of the role of horses in the colonial economies of South Africa Horses were key to the colonial economies of southern Africa, buttressing the socio-political order and inspiring contemporary imaginations. Just as they had done in Europe, Asia, the Americas and North Africa, these equine colonizers not only provided power and transportation to settlers (and later indigenous peoples) but also helped transform their new biophysical and social environments. The horses introduced to the southern tip of Africa were not only agents but subjects of enduring changes. This book explores the introduction of these horses under VOC rule in the mid-seventeenth century, their dissemination into the interior, their acquisition by indigenous groups and their ever-shifting roles. In undergoing their relocation to the Cape, the horse of the Dutch empire in southeast Asia experienced a physical transformation over time. Establishing an early breeding stock was fraught with difficulty and horses remained vulnerable in the new and dangerous environment. They had to be nurtured into defending their owners' ambitions: first those of the white settlement and then African and other hybrid social groupings. The book traces the way horses were adapted by shifting human needs in the nineteenth century. It focuses on their experiences in the South African War, on the cusp of the twentieth century, and highlights how horses remained integral to civic functioning on various levels, replaced with mechanization only after lively debate. The book thus reinserts the horse into the broader historical narrative. The socio-economic and political ramifications of their introduction is delineated. The idea of ecological imperialism is tested in order to draw southern African environmental history into a wider global dialogue on socio-environmental historiographical issues. The focus is also on the symbolic dimension that led horses to be both feared and desired. Even the sensory dimensions of this species' interaction with human societies is explored. Finally, the book speculates about what a new kind of history that takes animals seriously might offer us.

Book The Spotted Wonder

Download or read book The Spotted Wonder written by The Tetrarch and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If only they could talk? Now one of them does. And not just any nag. THE TETRARCH was one of the Turfs greatest racehorses. The oddly marked colt is acknowledged as the fastest two-year-old ever to set hoof on an English racecourse. His freakish powers set him apart: he was a phenomenon. Retired undefeated amid sensational circumstances, the charismatic grey proved an unenthusiastic stallion. Yet he fathered Classic winners and became champion sire, establishing dynasties that ensure his influence is felt to this day throughout the bloodstock world. Only an elite few racehorses become public idols and earn themselves a nickname. This is the story of THE SPOTTED WONDER as he might tell it.

Book Mr Darley s Arabian

Download or read book Mr Darley s Arabian written by Christopher McGrath and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1704 a bankrupt English merchant sent home the colt he had bought from Bedouin tribesmen near the ruins of Palmyra. Thomas Darley hoped this horse might be the ticket to a new life back in Yorkshire. But he turned out to be far more than that, and although Mr. Darley's Arabian never ran a race, 95% of all thoroughbreds in the world today are descended from him. In this book, for the first time, award-winning racing writer Christopher McGrath traces this extraordinary bloodline through twenty-five generations to our greatest modern racehorse, Frankel. The story of racing is about man's relationship with horses, and Mr. Darley's Arabian also celebrates the men and women who owned, trained and traded the stallions that extended the dynasty. McGrath expertly guides us through three centuries of scandals, adventures and fortunes won and lost: our sporting life offers a fascinating view into our history. With a canvas that extends from the diamond mines of South Africa to the trenches of the Great War, and a cast ranging from Smithfield meat salesmen to the inspiration for Mr. Toad, and from legendary jockeys to not one, but two disreputable Princes of Wales (and a very unamused Queen Victoria), Mr. Darley's Arabian shows us the many faces of the sport of kings.
