Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Design of Plate Girder Bridges This book has been written for the benefit of young Engineers and Draughtsmen engaged on the design of Constructional Steelwork, and is particularly intended for those whose training has been more on the theoretical than the practical side. It is the result of practical experience both in manufacture and design, and the examples given and opinions expressed are based on actual practice. In writing this book, it' has been assumed that the reader has a certain knowledge of Applied Mechanics and the Strength of Materials, and beyond mentioning the case of a Simple Beam, these subjects have. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plate-Girder Railway Bridges The great majority of bridges on a line of railway are short-span plate-girder bridges. This book is intended to help those young engineers who, joining an engineers office for the first time, find themselves engaged in this class of work. All complicated calculations have been avoided and the object in view has been to help the student or pupil to design a bridge of this kind efficiently, cheaply, simply, and in accordance with modern practice. The theoretical knowledge required is small, and an attempt has been made not to enlarge on this part of the subject more than absolutely necessary. Practical details with regard to construction and erection, together with particulars of market sizes of plates, &c., have been given as far as possible. A chapter has been given to specifications for steel and iron, and to some notes on the treatment of these metals in the manufacture of bridge work, accompanied by some remarks on the working stresses to be adopted in these materials. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bridge and Structural Design Both analytical and graphical methods have been employed for obtaining stresses, and the one which seemed best suited for any particular subject has been adopted. But few are given, as it was thought unnecessary to repeat information given in any of the rolling mills' hand-books. Although the hook is intended principally for students and draughts men, there are parts which may be of interest to practicing bridge designers. Particular attention is here drawn to Art. I7, which treats of the design of a knee - braced mill building; and to Art. 19, which discusses the rivet spacing and web splices in plate girders, in which one-eighth of the web plate is counted on as flange area. The girders are designed for Waddell's Class R loading, which consists of two ton engines followed by ifioo pounds per linear foot, for a dead load of 750 pounds of steel per linear foot, and 450 pounds per linear foot for track. In the investigation the live load is considered the same as that used in the design, but the dead load is taken directly from the computations which are the actual calculated weights. Book A Practical Treatise on Bridge Construction

Download or read book A Practical Treatise on Bridge Construction written by T. Claxton Fidler and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Bridge-Construction: Being a d104-Book on the Design and Construction of Bridges in Iron and Steel, for the Use of Students, Draughtsmen, and Engineers Within the last few years, the art of bridge-construction has undergone many important changes. Engineers have been called upon to construct bridges of unprecedented magnitude, whose design and execution have presented a number of new problems, or have invested old ones with an importance which they did not before possess. At the same time, new points of interest have arisen in connection with the introduction of steel, the adoption of new forms of construction, and the employment of new methods of research; while the constant accumulation of experimental facts has, in the meantime, added largely to our stock of practical knowledge in regard to such subjects as the strength of materials and the effects of wind-pressure. The object of this book is to describe the modem practice of Bridge-construction, and to set forth in the simplest language the mechanical principles and experimental facts on which it is based. The design and arrangement of the work have been dictated by a desire to render it as useful as possible, not only to engineers or draughtsmen who may be engaged in the work of bridge-calculations and bridge-construction, but also to students. With this object, the earlier chapters of the work are devoted to a simple demonstration of those mechanical principles which must of necessity form the beginning of any study of the subject; and which are more fully developed and applied in later portions of the book. Book A Text Book on Roofs and Bridges

Download or read book A Text Book on Roofs and Bridges written by Mansfield Merriman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book on Roofs and Bridges: Bridge Design The present edition has been entirely rewritten in order to bring the subject fully up to date, for the changes in bridge design during the past eight years have been remarkable. The rapid increase in live loads on the principal railroads in this country has necessitated an unusually large amount of new construction to replace the old bridges, which were designed for much lighter traffic. The extensive scale on which this work had to be done led to a general revision of specifications and to careful attention to the design of details so as to secure greater stiffness as well as strength in the new structures. These changes include the introduction of some new forms of details; the elimination, as far as practicable, of adjustable members; the entire superseding of wrought iron by steel; the substitution Of riveted trusses for pin-connected trusses in the shorter spans; and increased care in designing the joints so as to reduce the secondary stresses to a minimum. In the descriptions Of the details of plate-girder and truss bridges, introduced in Chapters VI, VIII, and XI, only those are given which may be properly claimed as standard in the best recent practice. Special attention is called to the new feature of carefully selected references to engineering periodi cals where more extended descriptions and applications of various details may be found.
