Book excerpt: Since passing federal legislation in education, local school districts have turned to problem-solving teams to support students at risk of not meeting grade-level benchmarks. The research aims to answer the question: To what extent does team perception of student success teams impact student learning outcomes? Understanding the perception of student success team members and the connection to student achievement is significant due to the widespread use of the team approach to supporting individual student needs. A qualitative research study was conducted involving the case study of a single school site's student success team. Student success team extant data, including student assessment data (MAP scores), student action plans (interventions and accommodations), and open-ended survey responses, were qualitatively coded for major themes and compared to current educational literature. This study showed participation in the student success team created a sense of purpose for school staff members. The student success team provided essential data collection to understand individual student needs. Participating students benefited from student success teams if there was consistency, time, and accountability of interventions and accommodations, and the student success team created positive school stakeholder relationships. There is a need to understand how team perception of student success teams impacts the team's ability to affect change in student achievement. The study concluded with lessons learned whereby creating functioning systems of student support through teams can positively impact student achievement when the team perceives their work to be purposeful, driven by data, supported consistently, and built trusting school site relationships.
