Book Power and the Pursuit of Peace Theory and Practice in the History of Relations Between States

Download or read book Power and the Pursuit of Peace Theory and Practice in the History of Relations Between States written by F. H. Hinsley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1967-10 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last years of the nineteenth century peace proposals were first stimulated by fear of the danger of war rather than in consequence of its outbreak. In this study of the nature and history of international relations Mr Hinsley presents his conclusions about the causes of war and the development of men's efforts to avoid it. In the first part he examines international theories from the end of the middle ages to the establishment of the League of Nations in their historical setting. This enables him to show how far modern peace proposals are merely copies or elaborations of earlier schemes. He believes there has been a marked reluctance to test these theories not only against the formidable criticisms of men like Rousseau, Kant and Bentham, but also against what we have learned about the nature of international relations and the history of the practice of states. This leads him to the second part of his study - an analysis of the origins of the modern states' system and of its evolution between the eighteenth century and the First World War.

  • Author : Christopher J. Fettweis
  • Publisher : Georgetown University Press

Download or read book Dangerous Times written by Christopher J. Fettweis and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-27 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What horrors will the twenty-first century bring? For many people, a clash of civilizations and a perilous return to great power rivalries are the dominant visions of things to come. Fueled by daily headlines, overwhelming majorities of people from all walks of life consider the world to be a far more chaotic, frightening, and ultimately more dangerous place than ever before. Christopher J. Fettweis argues that these impressions, however widespread, are wrong. Dangerous Times? is an examination of international politics that reveals both theoretical logic and empirical data that support the vision of a future where wars between great powers are unlikely and transnational threats can be contained. Despite popular perception, today a far greater percentage of the world’s population lives in peace than at any time in history, and the number and intensity of all types of warfare have dropped steadily since the early 1990s. Terrorism, though reprehensible, can be combated and can actually increase international cooperation among states fighting a common threat. World wars like those of the twentieth century—the true clash of civilizations—are unlikely to be repeated in the close-knit world of the twenty-first century. In this sharp and insightful book, Fettweis discusses this revolution in human history and its ramifications for international relations theory. He suggests a new vision for a more restrained U.S. grand strategy and foreign policy and reveals how, despite pessimistic perceptions to the contrary, the world is more likely entering a golden age of peace and security.

Book excerpt: The US prison industrial complex is in desperate need of repair. Corrections has become big business in America and a young, misguided generation is fueling a system built to fail. More and more kids are hitting the streets and lining up to go behind the razor wire. What is the solution? What if reformed felons could change the future of the next generation? Kit Cummings' bold vision-borne out of twelve years working with more than ten thousand offenders-flips the script on prison reform and disrupts the pipeline from schools to prisons. He replaces the current gang-inspired convict code with one that integrates respect, integrity, and dignity, giving prisoners the freedom to dream big dreams and become positive role models to a young generation at risk. Brothers who have been behind the wire share powerful lessons with our youth, redirecting their path and ending the violence in the streets and in their hearts. The proven success of Kit's Power of Peace Project lays the groundwork for a future with less violence, declining prison populations, and a more sound and just prison system. In 2010, Kit Cummings founded the Power of Peace Project. Using the experience he gained resolving conflict in some of the most dangerous areas in the world, he applies his principles to bring about change in prisons, schools, corporations, and the faith-based community. Kit has worked with the incarcerated in over a hundred prisons, jails, detention centers, and rehab facilities and served over ten thousand prisoners. The New Convict Code brings solutions to the growing epidemic of crime and violence we are witnessing among today's youth.

Book Understandings of the Power of Peace

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every hour of every day proves that inadequate solutions for social, political, and personal crises flamed by multifaceted hate singes everyone. Peace cannot be a compromise. Peace visits, and like great escape artists, it vanishes, leaving in its place bewilderment and unquenchable desire for more. Peacelessness is profitable. Industry and governments grow in response to peacelessness. Corporations and cousins fight for a piece of the pie. Blessed must be the peacemakers, they experience only temporary success yet their efforts continue in hope as evidence of things not seen. Peace is the strong cord running through history. Peace ties together every chapter of every book of the Bible. Peace is the subject of every sermon and hymn and is the cause of every war. Peace is so powerful even God works under its influence. Who understands that? Peace will bring this world to its end.
