Book excerpt: One man stood like a rock between Pakistani Lashkars and Poonch in Nov 1947. Forty thousand refugees depended on him for a year for food, shelter and protection from the raiders. Braving all odds, he built an airstrip and daring pilots like Baba Mehar Singh flew in supplies and ammunition till the siege broke. This man was a hero. He led his forces to victory in the Battle of Shalateng saving Srinagar before Poonch. This man had an iron will. Held as a POW by the Japanese in Singapore, he escaped with two fellow officers, travelling through enemy-held Malaya, Thailand and Burma for six months before reaching India. The British awarded him the Military Cross (MC).This man served India like no other. But his Generals punished him, denied him justice, court-martialled and dismissed him. They stripped him of his medals, but could not take away his MC. He died forlorn and unsung. This man was Brigadier Pritam Singh, MC. The people of Poonch call him Sher Bachha and worship him. Even today. This soldier-patriot deserves to have his honour restored. This is his story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the Indian Air Force had not put our troops airlifted in the early hours of 27th October, 1947 from Delhi on the ground at Srinagar which was menacingly threatened by Pakistan forces, the history and map of India might well have been quite different. In those momentous hours the Indian Army and Indian Air Force, in a heroic joint operation, began to roll back the blatant aggression of Pakistani military and save Jammu & Kashmir from the marauders. Independent India’s first war started with no other means available to assist the beleaguered local forces; and Indian Army troops were moved by air under grave emergency conditions from Delhi to stem the enemy’s advance. From this point started the saga of the an almost forgotten war: the first and the longest war independent India was forced to fight, and where the fledgling air force, emaciated by partition, and preoccupied with relief and rescue operations following massive riots and demographic movements played a crucial role in India’s defence. Indian Air Force continued to play a vital role during that most incredible war; and this book chronicles the history of its role, where all the bits and pieces have been brought together by the painstaking persistence of the author to share the glorious record of the Indian Air Force. The men in blue, knowing the challenges of an aggressive military, the weather and terrain of high altitude, and the difficulties of supplying our troops, working closely with the army knew that it executed one of most brilliant military campaigns in its history under the most daunting circumstances — feats that it has continued to repeat ever since then. But time and again the air force moved troops into critical battles and provided extensive combat support in uncharted areas to turn the tide. Within the IAF; the deeds of pilots, engineers, technicians and other personnel during that war became legend and inspired succeeding generations. But little has been written or known in and outside the service about how our inheritance was shaped by so few. This volume tells the story for the first time, painstakingly put together from extensive research and interviews by the author.

Book The Crash of A Civilization

Download or read book The Crash of A Civilization written by Kanchan Banerjee and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2022-07-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Current condition of each citizen, the society, and the nation are the result of a deeply complex history. But what we know from history books, especially academic textbooks, are constructs based on the narratives of political powers, colonists, and outdated socioeconomic analysts. The time has come to know and understand our true history from fresh and updated perspectives. The subject of this book is how foreign ideologies and forces Christian, Islamic, and later colonists, western and Marxists' profound and long-term influence have impacted India, her society, and people. With a computer science back- ground, Kanchan Banerjee makes this remarkable and significant contribution, attempting to depict the current era with unique and lively storytelling using carefully studied evidence, logical deduction, and analysis. He has given detailed and comprehensive descriptions and assessments from pre-Islamic Arabia's history, foreign attacks and invasions of the Huns, the Turks to the Islamic rule and occupation in Delhi, and the British colonial and imperial atrocities. How did the crash and fall of a great ancient civilization happen? How has it been wounded the body and soul of a nation to break into several pieces? And what is the way to change the direction to the path of recovery and revival? This book is an effort to find the answers to these questions from our true history. If we know our past, we can change our future as well.

Book Life Politics and Resistance in Kashmir after 2019

Download or read book Life Politics and Resistance in Kashmir after 2019 written by Shubh Mathur and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forcible integration of Kashmir into the Indian union has unleashed a new wave of intense political repression, human rights violations and resource appropriation in Kashmir and has once again made the conflict a focus of international attention. This has led to a paradigm shift in global perceptions and created space for new understandings of the conflict and its possible resolutions. Life, Politics, and Resistance in Kashmir after 2019: A Multidisciplinary Understanding of the Conflict brings together original research and analysis by emerging and established scholars from a range of disciplines to offer a profoundly transformative understanding of the history and experience of Kashmir and the Kashmiris. This book builds a Kashmir-centric narrative of contemporary political and social developments through a discussion of topics ranging from struggles for human rights to environmental destruction and resource appropriation, as well as mental health and the experiences of women, children, political prisoners, and minorities.

Book Kashmir

  • Author : Sumantra Bose
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-07-01
  • ISBN : 9780674028555
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Kashmir written by Sumantra Bose and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002, nuclear-armed adversaries India and Pakistan mobilized for war over the long-disputed territory of Kashmir, sparking panic around the world. Drawing on extensive firsthand experience in the contested region, Sumantra Bose reveals how the conflict became a grave threat to South Asia and the world and suggests feasible steps toward peace. Though the roots of conflict lie in the end of empire and the partition of the subcontinent in 1947, the contemporary problem owes more to subsequent developments, particularly the severe authoritarianism of Indian rule. Deadly dimensions have been added since 1990 with the rise of a Kashmiri independence movement and guerrilla war waged by Islamist groups. Bose explains the intricate mix of regional, ethnic, linguistic, religious, and caste communities that populate Kashmir, and emphasizes that a viable framework for peace must take into account the sovereignty concerns of India and Pakistan and popular aspirations to self-rule as well as conflicting loyalties within Kashmir. He calls for the establishment of inclusive, representative political structures in Indian Kashmir, and cross-border links between Indian and Pakistani Kashmir. Bose also invokes compelling comparisons to other cases, particularly the peace-building framework in Northern Ireland, which offers important lessons for a settlement in Kashmir. The Western world has not fully appreciated the desperate tragedy of Kashmir: between 1989 and 2003 violence claimed up to 80,000 lives. Informative, balanced, and accessible, Kashmir is vital reading for anyone wishing to understand one of the world's most dangerous conflicts.

Book The Making of Martyrs in India Pakistan Bangladesh

Download or read book The Making of Martyrs in India Pakistan Bangladesh written by Faisal Khosa and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making of Martyrs unravels an epic saga of populist politics in the postcolonial Indian subcontinent. Indira Gandhi, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were towering figures and have been simultaneously loved and hated in equal measure. During their heyday, each of these leaders garnered extraordinary power and charisma. Their followers, admirers and loyal supporters continue to idolise and romanticise them, yet in the eyes of their critics they were ruthless, power-hungry tyrants and partisan villains. These dichotomies remain irreconcilable since their followers venerate them as a model for the future and their critics relegate them to a haunted past. Drawing on years of research, Faisal Khosa explores the turbulent lives and times of these three leaders and gives us a vivid account of their politics and personalities.
