In the North Central States, rates of production prevailed on February 1 which are not usually reached until March 1. The average number of eggs laid per bird during January was 11 percent higher than a year earlier. With the record number of layers on farms, 17 percent more eggs were produced than during January l9uj. Although more eggs were used for noncivilian purposes in January than in January last year, civilian consumption apparently was considerably larger than in January 1933. Some retail egg prices in mid-february were a little higher than a year earlier despite increased movement of eggs into civilian channels, indicating a record strong demand for eggs for this season of the year. Supplies of eggs at prevailing prices have accumulated at some markets during the last several weeks largely because production has been timed with the weather while most seasonal uses storing, drying, and hatching are timed with the calendar. From late December 19h} to February 19, 19h the War Food Administration purchased 233,53h cases of shell eggs for price support purposes. Egg production will increase less than seasonally from the relatively high level of January and early February to the annual seasonal peak in April, while civilian demand may strengthen further as a result of seasonally reduced meat supplies. The number of layers on farms on January 1 was only 1 percent above a year earlier compared with an increase of 8 percent on October 1, l95k. Egg production, which on January 1, 1955 was about h percent larger than a year earlier, will continue to increase seasonally the next two or three months. How ever, during the flush period output will be about at l95h levels, rather than above the year before. Although springtime egg supplies will thus be somewhat smaller than expected earlier, they will nevertheless remain at a high level compared with other recent years. Egg prices in mid-january averaged about the same as in mid-december, when the price received by farmers was cents per dozen compared with h8.5 cents a year earlier. The U. 8. Average egg-feed price ratio in mid December was (pounds of poultry ration that could be bought with the value of 1 dozen eggs), compared with in mid-december 1953, and as the December average for 1988-52. Off-season production of chicks for laying-flock replacement has been considerably lower in the past few months than a year earlier. Hatch ery output of replacement chicks this spring is likely also to be lower. Broiler prices rose sharply in the last few days of December and in early January, when they were 22 to 25 cents in some areas compared with 17 to 20 cents a month earlier.
