Book Perceived Discrimination Stereotype Threat Grit and Neuropsychological Performance in African Americans

Download or read book Perceived Discrimination Stereotype Threat Grit and Neuropsychological Performance in African Americans written by Brandon E. Tross and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of perceived discrimination, stereo-type threat, and grit on the neuropsychological performance of African Americans. Within the field of neuropsychology there is a paucity of research exploring cultural and contextual variables that contribute to low performance outcomes for ethnic minorities on neuropsychological assessments in comparison to European Americans (Fujii, 2018; Mindt et al., 2010). Perceived discrimination and stereotype threat have been shown to lower performance outcomes for African Americans on neuropsychological assessments (Barnes et al., 2012; Thames et al., 2013). Because of their lower performance outcomes on neuropsychological assessments, African Americans are at greater risk for being inaccurately diagnosed as impaired, limiting their ability to function independently (Mindt et al., 2010). This study sought to better understand the effects of perceived discrimination and stereo-type threat on the neuropsychological performance of African Americans and explored whether a brief psychoeducational intervention could reduce or eliminate the stereotype threat effect. As there is a paucity of literature on non-cognitive positive predictors of performance (Hill & Aita, 2018), this study also explored the ability of grit to predict performance outcomes on neuropsychological assessments. A brief web-based neuropsychological evaluation was conducted to obtain participant neuropsychological performance (NP) scores. Participants consisted of 80 African Americans across the United States. The study utilized a 2 (stereotype threat vs. no stereotype threat) x 2 (intervention vs. no intervention) factorial design. An ANOVA, independent sample t-test, and simple linear regressions were conducted to test four hypotheses. Results of this study indicated that the conditions participants were placed in had an effect on their neuropsychological performance; that a brief psychoeducational intervention was not able to mitigate the stereotype threat effect; higher grit scores were implicated in better neuro-psychological performance; and high levels of perceived discrimination were not related to poor neuropsychological performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides a comprehensive perspective on the concept of ageism, its origins, the manifestation and consequences of ageism, as well as ways to respond to and research ageism. The book represents a collaborative effort of researchers from over 20 countries and a variety of disciplines, including, psychology, sociology, gerontology, geriatrics, pharmacology, law, geography, design, engineering, policy and media studies. The contributors have collaborated to produce a truly stimulating and educating book on ageism which brings a clear overview of the state of the art in the field. The book serves as a catalyst to generate research, policy and public interest in the field of ageism and to reconstruct the image of old age and will be of interest to researchers and students in gerontology and geriatrics.

Book Minority and Cross Cultural Aspects of Neuropsychological Assessment

Download or read book Minority and Cross Cultural Aspects of Neuropsychological Assessment written by F. Richard Ferraro and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minority and cross-cultural psychology is more relevant now than ever in our diverse world. Given the dramatic local and global changes occurring daily with regard to demographics, population changes, and immigration issues, minority and cross-cultural psychology is fast becoming a respected and critical area of scientific study. Pair that with the fact that people of all cultures and racial groups are living longer and experiencing age-related diseases and disorders, one can easily see the need for additional work on issues related to neuropsychological assessment. This new edition brings to the forefront recent developments by seasoned experts in the field. They offer up their newest projects in minority and cross-cultural aspects of neuropsychological assessment and are joined by new, up-and-coming professionals across a wide array of disciplines including psychology, medicine, and neuropsychology. Like the first edition, this updated collection sheds light on the ever-growing need for adequate neuropsychological assessment to a wider subset of individuals, crossing many cultural and minority barriers in the process. Continuously pushing the boundaries of neuropsychological assessment, this collection is essential reading for cognitive and clinical psychologists, and neuropsychologists, and a model text for advanced courses dealing with minority and cross-cultural issues.

Book The Effects of Early Environmental Experiences on African American Neuropsychological Test Performance

Download or read book The Effects of Early Environmental Experiences on African American Neuropsychological Test Performance written by Desiree Anastacia Byrd and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuropsychologists do not yet understand the sources of ethnic group variation in cognitive test scores. While many factors may influence neuropsychological test performance, environmental factors, such as educational and home histories, are likely to be significant contributors. There is considerable evidence from human and animal research that qualitative aspects of early living environments are related to brain development and contemporaneous measures of neurocognitive functioning. There were three main goals of the present study: (a) to assess relationships between neurocognitive functioning and retrospective reports of early environmental/educational experiences in both African-American (AA) and Caucasian (CA) adults; (b) to identify those environmental variables which characterize AA subjects with relatively poor test performance; and (c) to determine whether adjusting cognitive test scores for hypothesized differences on these early environmental factors reduces the ethnic group performance disparity. Measurements for the present study included cognitive testing data and detailed retrospective early environmental histories on 100 neurologically normal adults (75 AA, 25 CA). Results indicate that: (1) consistent with previous research, the two ethnic groups differed significantly on their cognitive test performance; (2) the two ethnic groups demonstrated small, but significant, differences in their early environmental histories; (3) retrospective accounts of early environmental experiences were significantly related to absolute performance on cognitive tests in both groups; (4) the qualitative measures of early environmental experiences accounted for some variance in cognitive test scores, above and beyond that attributable to age, gender, and years of education completed; but (5) covarying age-, education-, and gender-corrected cognitive scores for early environmental influences did not substantially affect the ethnic group performance disparity. It was concluded that the early environmental influences retrospectively-assessed in this study are related to adult cognition, but that the relationship is less strong than that between cognition and years of education. Further, the relationship between these environmental variables and test performance is not unique to AAs, and does not appear to be clinically useful for interpreting AA neuropsychological test results. Finally, the results demonstrate the remaining need for ethnicity specific neuropsychological normative data, and for further research to better understand environmental influences on AA neuropsychological test performances.

Book Handbook of Cross Cultural Neuropsychology

Download or read book Handbook of Cross Cultural Neuropsychology written by Elaine Fletcher-Janzen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, relatively few investigations in neuropsychology have been sensitive to the analysis of cultural variables. This handbook will assist the neuropsychologist interested in cultural competence and help increase understanding of the link between cultural competence in assessment and intervention and good treatment outcomes. The handbook authors provide an in-depth discussion of the current status of multicultural training in neuropsychology; specific information on diverse groups (age, gender, ethnicity, etc.), assessment instruments, and clinical populations (HIV infected, seizure disorders, brain injuries); and unique analysis of immigration patterns, forensics, and psychopharmacology. This volume is the first to summarize the cultural data available in neuropsychology. A valuable resource for clinical neuropsychologists, school psychologists and rehabilitation professionals.
