Book excerpt: Arcana, the secrets and mysteries of a land remade by Angels of Light and Darkness, remains in the tales, tomes, and relics scattered through Erilan, a war-torn continent of once-great kingdoms. Seven hundred years ago, the War of the White Crown decimated the races Galadorian, Croe, Toran, Daiman, Ur, and Daemon, and much of their history was lost. Four unlikely heroes, with secrets of their own, set out to reclaim the forgotten lore and tokens of magic that hold the hope to oppose the dark and malevolent forces that are rising to overwhelm the land once again. Ronan, Hart, Ash, and Blackthorn begin their quest to unearth the arcana their ancestors brought to bear against evils that nearly destroyed the free folk of the kingdoms, but another seeks these tokens as well for his own ends. Ban, the necromancer, covets dominion over all of Erilan. He is the Sand King, ruler of Aegis, but even now, his influence in other kingdoms threatens to achieve his dark aims. First of a trilogy, Arcana begins the saga within an epic fantasy richly detailed in history, lore, and legend. Drakespawn and Daemon Glaive conclude the cycle of the Rings of Silver, set against the backdrop of a magical, mythical land.

Download or read book Pompeii written by Paul Wilkinson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resonant ruins of Pompeii are perhaps the most direct route back to the living, breathing world of the ancient Romans. Two million visitors annually now walk the paved streets which re-emerged, miraculously preserved, from their layers of volcanic ash. Yet for all the fame and unique importance of the site, there is a surprising lack of a handy archaeological guide in English to reveal and explain its public spaces and private residences. This compact and user-friendly handbook, written by an expert in the field, helpfully fills that gap. Illustrated throughout with maps, plans, diagrams and other images, Pompeii: An Archaeological Guide offers a general introduction to the doomed city followed by an authoritative summary and survey of the buildings, artefacts and paintings themselves. The result is an unrivalled picture, derived from an intimate knowledge of Roman archaeology around the Bay of Naples, of the forum, temples, brothels, bath-houses, bakeries, gymnasia, amphitheatre, necropolis and other site buildings – including perennial favourites like the House of the Faun, named after its celebrated dancing satyr.
Download or read book The Letters of the Younger Pliny written by The Younger Pliny and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prominent lawyer and administrator, Pliny (c. AD 61-113) was also a prolific letter-writer, who numbered among his correspondents such eminent figures as Tacitus, Suetonius and the Emperor Trajan, as well as a wide circle of friends and family. His lively and very personal letters address an astonishing range of topics, from a deeply moving account of his uncle's death in the eruption that engulfed Pompeii, to observations on the early Christians - 'a desperate sort of cult carried to extravagant lengths' - from descriptions of everyday life in Rome, with its scandals and court cases, to Pliny's life in the country.
Download or read book Rings of Silver written by John P.R. Hughes and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-01-18 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Daemon Glaive, the black sword torn from the heartwood of the Tree of Lore to slay an angel and claimed by Ghul, the Daemon King, through which death by age and pestilence was released into Erilan, has been spirited away by Ash and Blackthorn. Though robbed of the mighty, necromantic token, Ghul is undaunted, and his campaign in the War of the Daemon Glaive to wrest dominion over Erilan is certain to end in nothing less than utter triumph. The hosts of the western alliance are too few in number to rebuff Ghul's vast swarm of daemons, dark warriors, and necromancies unless a prophecy is fulfilled. This prophecy foretells great knights, mighty heroes, and unknown allies will unite to vanquish the Daemon King and destroy his dreams of a tyrannical empire, yet it seems a futile hope as countless fiends of Ghul's swarms gather in the passes over the Iron Mountains, preparing to sweep away their meager foes. Yet Ronan, the wizard once known as Eridal, casts his spells in hopes of raising a legendary king from a black curse in which he slumbers, perhaps the fulfillment of the first verse of the augury of the Drakestone Prophecy. The final tome in the Rings of Silver trilogy, Daemon Glaive brings together all the history of Arcana and the mystery of Drakespawn, the previous titles in the series, to an enthralling and thrilling conclusion, wherein the fate of Erilan is revealed in the destinies of its villains and heroes.

Download or read book Above the Death Pits Beneath the Flag written by Jackie Feldman and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israeli youth voyages to Poland are one of the most popular and influential forms of transmission of Holocaust memory in Israeli society. Through intensive participant observation, group discussions, student diaries, and questionnaires, the author demonstrates how the State shapes Poland into a living deathscape of Diaspora Jewry. In the course of the voyage, students undergo a rite de passage, in which they are transformed into victims, victorious survivors, and finally witnesses of the witnesses. By viewing, touching, and smelling Holocaust-period ruins and remains, by accompanying the survivors on the sites of their suffering and survival, crying together and performing commemorative ceremonies at the death sites, students from a wide variety of family backgrounds become carriers of Shoah memory. They come to see the State and its defense as the romanticized answer to the Shoah. These voyages are a bureaucratic response to uncertainty and fluidity of identity in an increasingly globalized and fragmented society. This study adds a measured and compassionate ethical voice to ideological debates surrounding educational and cultural forms of encountering the past in contemporary Israel, and raises further questions about the representation of the Holocaust after the demise of the last living witnesses.
Download or read book Anonymous Prophets and Archetypal Kings written by Paul Hedley Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Hedley Jones presents a coherent reading of 1 Kings 13 that is attentive to literary, historical and theological concerns. Beginning with a summary and evaluation of Karl Barth's overtly theological exposition of the chapter – as set out in his Church Dogmatics – Jones explores how this analysis was received and critiqued by Barth's academic peers, who focused on very different questions, priorities and methods. By highlighting substantive material in the text for further investigation, Jones sheds light on a range of hermeneutical issues that support exegetical work unseen, and additionally provides a wider scope of opinion into the conversation by reviewing the work of other scholars whose methods and priorities also diverge from those of Barth and his contemporaries. After evaluating four additional in-depth readings of 1 Kings 13, Jones presents a more theoretical discussion about perceived dichotomies in biblical studies that tend to surface regularly in methodological debates. This volume culminates with Jones' original exposition of the chapter, which offers an interpretation that reads 1 Kings 13 as a narrative analogy, where the figure of Josiah functions as a hermeneutical key to understanding the dynamics of the story.
