Book The Portable Antiquities Scheme and Roman Britain

Download or read book The Portable Antiquities Scheme and Roman Britain written by Tom Brindle and published by British Museum Research Public. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a project run by the British Museum which encourages the voluntary reporting of archaeological artefacts discovered by members of the public in England and Wales, particularly metal detector users. Finds are recorded onto a database (available at www.finds.org.uk), and this resource now holds records for over 800,000 archaeological objects, a figure which increases on a daily basis. Since its establishment in 1997, it has become a key resource for archaeological researchers. Around 40 per cent of the artefacts recorded on the database are of Roman date, and the principal aim of this book is to assess the contribution that this resource can make to our understanding of Roman Britain. Bringing together vast quantities of seemingly random finds scattered across the English and Welsh countryside, Tom Brindle brings order to this data by showing how it can be used to indicate the presence of 240 previously unknown Roman sites. These sites are presented within a series of regional case studies which discuss important new sites as well as statistics that contribute significantly to the understanding of the density of settlement in rural Roman Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a system for recording archaeological finds discovered by members of the public in England and Wales, aimed primarily at metal detector users. The PAS database includes records for hundreds of thousands of Roman objects and is a significant archaeological resource. Yet the potential for using the data to explore themes in the study of Roman Britain has yet to be fully exploited. In recent years there has been increased dissatisfaction among Roman archaeologists in the lack of work undertaken on Romano-British rural settlement and landscapes, as research has traditionally favoured urban, military and religious sites. The wide geographical availability of Roman data on the PAS database makes it an excellent resource through which to approach this problem. However, the difficulties associated with interpreting unstratified and haphazardly gathered artefacts have required the development of a sophisticated methodology which presents ways of using PAS data to recognise new Romano-British sites and to augment evidence known from other archaeological sources. This is achieved through five regional case studies (Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, North and North East Lincolnshire and Cumbria). In each case study an overview of the distribution of PAS data considers how they contribute to the settlement pattern known from other archaeological sources, illustrating how the effectiveness of PAS data as an archaeological resource is regionally variable. Ten micro- level case studies explore the potential for PAS data to enhance understanding of individual rural settlements and landscapes, providing new information on chronology and site characterisation.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Roman Britain

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Roman Britain written by Martin Millett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a twenty-first century perspective on Roman Britain, combining current approaches with the wealth of archaeological material from the province. This volume introduces the history of research into the province and the cultural changes at the beginning and end of the Roman period. The majority of the chapters are thematic, dealing with issues relating to the people of the province, their identities and ways of life. Further chapters consider the characteristics of the province they lived in, such as the economy, and settlement patterns. This Handbook reflects the new approaches being developed in Roman archaeology, and demonstrates why the study of Roman Britain has become one of the most dynamic areas of archaeology. The book will be useful for academics and students interested in Roman Britain.

Book excerpt: The following thesis surveys the deposition and distribution of copper alloy vessels in Britain during the Roman period and then applies this data to the study of culture change and the construction of identity in the province during this time. The principal research strategy was to categorize the objects from published sources within four groups based on Depositional Context and to then examine these data-sets for patterns in geographic and temporal distribution, object form and decoration as well as patterns among the findspots where these objects were discovered. The copper alloy vessels themselves are classified using forms and typologies familiar from previous scholarship, though a new system for classifying handled pans was found necessary and is introduced in this thesis. Multiple patterns emerged within Depositional Contexts, Site Types and regional distribution relating to vessel selection and decoration which indicate a variety of practice by diverse peoples. This analysis argues that the principal function of copper alloy vessels in Roman Britain was for ablutions, whereas it has been previously proposed that most vessels were used for dining or drinking services. Additionally, the spread of copper alloy vessels was found to be so wide across the province that it was determined that this commodity was utilized and adapted by much of the population of Britain. The conclusions were then applied to the principal paradigms currently ascendant in characterizing culture change in the province. It was found that the predominant theories, which largely rely upon a dualistic view of cultural aggression and resistance, are insufficient to characterize the complex interaction between cultures in Britain and the development of an integrated and fluid material culture as expressed through the repertoire, deposition and distribution of copper alloy vessels evident during the Roman period in Britain.

Book excerpt: Studies on finds in Roman Britain and the Western Provinces have come to greater prominence in the literature of recent years. The quality of such work has also improved, and is now theoretically informed, and based on rich data-sets. Work on finds over the last decade or two has changed our understanding of the Roman era in profound ways, and yet despite such encouraging advances and such clear worth, there has to date, been little in the way of a dedicated forum for the presentation and evaluation of current approaches to the study of material culture. The conference at which these papers were initially presented has gone some way to redressing this, and these papers bring the very latest studies on Roman finds to a wider audience. Twenty papers are here presented covering various themes.

Book Objects and Identities

Download or read book Objects and Identities written by Hella Eckardt and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores Rome's northern provinces through the portable artefacts people used and left behind. Objects are crucial to our understanding of the past, and can be used to explore interlinking aspects of identity. For example, can we identify incomers? How are exotic materials (such as amber and ivory) and objects depicting 'the exotic' (e.g. Africans) consumed? Do regional styles exist below the homogenizing influence of Roman trade? How do all these aspects of identity interact with others, such as status, gender, and age? In this innovative study, the author combines theoretical awareness and a willingness to engage with questions of social and cultural identity with a thorough investigation into the well-published but underused material culture of Rome's northern provinces. Pottery and coins, the dominant categories of many other studies, have here been largely excluded in favour of small portable objects such as items of personal adornment, amulets, and writing equipment. The case studies included were chosen because they relate to specific, often interlinking aspects of identity such as provincial, elite, regional, or religious identity. Their meaning is explored in their own right and in depth, and in careful examination of their contexts. It is hoped that these case studies will be of use to archaeologists working in other periods, and indeed to students of material culture generally by making a small contribution to a growing corpus of academic and popular books that develop interpretative, historical narratives from selected objects.

Book Dress and Society

Download or read book Dress and Society written by T. F. Martin and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While traditional studies of dress and jewellery have tended to focus purely on reconstruction or descriptions of style, chronology and typology, the social context of costume is now a major research area in archaeology. This refocusing is largely a result of the close relationship between dress and three currently popular topics: identity, bodies and material culture. Not only does dress constitute an important means by which people integrate and segregate to form group identities, but interactions between objects and bodies, quintessentially illustrated by dress, can also form the basis of much wider symbolic systems. Consequently, archaeological understandings of clothing shed light on some of the fundamental aspects of society, hence our intentionally unconditional title. Dress and Society illustrates the range of current archaeological approaches to dress using a number of case studies drawn from prehistoric to post-medieval Europe. Individually, each chapter makes a strong contribution in its own field whether through the discussion of new evidence or new approaches to classic material. Presenting the eight papers together creates a strong argument for a theoretically informed and integrated approach to dress as a specific category of archaeological evidence, emphasising that the study of dress not only draws openly on other disciplines, but is also a sub-discipline in its own right. However, rather than delimiting dress to a specialist area of research we seek to promote it as fundamental to any holistic archaeological understanding of past societies.
